WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, says that as video on the Web continues to grow, the movie industry needs evolve from a "channels" scenario to a "random access" platform, where films can be universally searched, watched and paid for. In accomplishing this, producers need to provide much greater metadata around their content. The transformation of video onto a data-rich "semantic Web" is a key objective of the World Web Consortium, the Boston-based group Sir Tim heads.Joost Was a Trailbaizer in the Semantic WebTwo years ago, we interviewed the W3C's Chief Architect Philippe Le Garet on the implementation of the semantic Web with data and video. Philippe addresses the pioneeering work of Joost in creating rich metadata around its content. Unfortunately Joost is closing shop, according to a report on TechCrunch.I interviewed Sir last week in Washington at the Embassy of Finland at a technology symposium presented by Finland's Technology Academy Foundation.Here is a 37-minute video of Sir Tim on stage at the event with New York Times reporter Steve Lohr. And if that happens, it will be a major loss. The news over the weekend that the two Skype founders have sued not only eBay and Sierra Partners, but ex-Joost executive Mike Volpi and a UK investment house indicate to me that this has moved way beyond a business case and into the personal. Joost was probably one of the most highly hyped introductions in the past three or four years. Fast out of the gate, the officially santioned Hulu was dismissed as a joke. Something happened along the way, and it s coming back to haunt the Skype transaction. Apparently, as Joost was scrambling to change from a peer-to-peer architecture (the original configuration that kept transmission bandwidth expenses low), Volpi became aware of some technical secrets that got passed along to eBay, without the knowledge or permission of Friis and Zennstrom. Not only double crossed by a partner, but making a fortune at the same time. With all parties being as rich as kings, there s no need to seek further gain except to fund revenge. The Skype founders (and the underlying bits for Kazaa, Morpheus and half a dozen others) have nothing they want so much as to sink Volpi. And if they have to bring down a service that keeps 400 million people in touch, they ll do so. That s the game that only rich guys can play well. HULU is now open for business, offering a wide selection of ad-supported television shows and films. The site appears to have dropped registration requirements, allowing users to quickly and easily begin watching content. Creating an account enables advanced features, such as subscribing to specific shows and creating an online queue of episodes. CEO Jason Kilar offered PaidContent some insight into the service, saying that he expects a 50-50 split between views on Hulu.com and on the extended distribution network. He said that Hulu has seen a surprising amount of long-form consumption while in beta, with a trend of short-form content being consumed earlier in the day and long-form content increasing later in the day. The new developer code will allow uploading, managing, searching and video playback on any number of devices for any number of purposes. A few examples of how it will be used: TiVo will use it to integrate the video-sharing site into its set-top boxes. Electronic Arts will use the API s to allow gamers to upload videos of personalized Spore creatures. And UC Berkeley has created a system that will automatically post university lectures to YouTube. If a large numbers of developers accept the idea it could further solidify YouTube s lead as the top video-sharing site.NIELSEN will offer second-by-second ratings using data collected from CHARTER set-top boxes in 320,000 Los Angeles homes. This is Nielsen s first use of set-top data for ratings and a clear response to the encroachment that TiVo and TNS Media have made on its core business. The new service will roll out sometime in the second quarter of this year.CBS will offer March Madness live and commercial-free on JOOST using a new live broadcast functionality that Joost is introducing today. Joost says the live games are a test of the new feature and will probably break. CBS will also offer the games on CBSSports.com, where it has dropped registration requirements and will finally allow bloggers, Facebook users and anyone else to link directly to specific games. Both changes should help increase traffic. The tournament starts next Thursday, March 20th.JEFF BEWKES said that he is open to the idea of merging AOL with another company. BREAKING NEWS: Genarlow Wilson's Free From JailCourt: Teen-sex sentence 'cruel and unusual' punishment ATLANTA, Georgia (CNN) -- The Georgia Supreme Court on Friday ordered that Genarlow Wilson be released from prison, ruling 4-3 that his sentence for a teen sex conviction was cruel and unusual punishment. Genarlow Wilson's case received national attention and led to changes in Georgia law. Wilson was convicted in 2005 of having oral sex with a consenting 15-year-old girl when he was 17.He has served more than two years in prison.Wilson's attorney, B.J. Bernstein, told CNN that he can be released as soon as a Monroe County judge issues a new order and it is served to the attorney general and the department of corrections. Bernstein said she called the prison warden, who has informed Wilson of his pending release, which could come "some time today."
