SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST More Info on Screencasts Online Paying Twice for Cellphone Service by Andrew McCaskey Paying Twice Cynics among us have often noted that the Killer App, when it arrives, will be some form of digital voice. With nearly 20 years of cellphone experience from analog 800Mhz through TDMA, CDMA, GSM and various steps in between, the continued problem of dropped calls, distorted signals and general unreliability have plagued users. Of course, our wonder in the ability to have any signal at all from the middle of a cornfield miles from any town with the original bag phones was quickly superceded by annoyance when the signal dropped or calls failed to complete. Obviously the levels of service, numbers of subscribers, and network complexity have increased tremendously (along with our expectations) . As an AT T subscriber (in a house with aluminum siding) it s a major pain to suffer continually dropping calls. As a result, I ve been very tempted by various extender boxes that promise solutions, allowing my network connection to perform the backhaul. Still, I m a bit resentful on dropping three or four hundred additional dollars on a repeater system that should restore my service (and my neighbors as well) I figure that I have already paid my roughly $100 a month for the service. As long as WiFi meets the need for backhaul, some clever combination of Fring, SkypeOut and Google Voice should be the work around. Now all I have to do is figure out how to get the good Wifi signal levels out in the backyard. But that seems to be doable for less than $400. Facebook integration around video got its first high profile exposure with CNN and the Inauguration of President Obama, but the first was last year's collaboration with Joost. A spokesperson for Facebook has told Beet.TV:"Joost users who have connected their Facebook accounts continue to rank as most active group on the site. These users watch more videos, are more likely to participate in Joost.com's community, and are more likely to contribute comments about the site's video content."Some metrics around the Joost/Facebook integration: --Since Joost implemented Facebook Connect in December 2008, the average Facebook Connect Joost user has watched +29% more videos and posted +6% more comments than the average Joost user who has not connected his or her account.--What's more, Joost's Facebook Connect users have invited +8% more friends, and have joined +16% more groups on average.

Tim Berners-Lee to Hollywood: Move from "Channels" to Random Access

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Sir Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, says that as video on the Web continues to grow, the movie industry needs evolve from a "channels" scenario to a "random access" platform, where films can be universally searched, watched and paid for. In accomplishing this, producers need to provide much greater metadata around their content. The transformation of video onto a data-rich "semantic Web" is a key objective of the World Web Consortium, the Boston-based group Sir Tim heads.Joost Was a Trailbaizer in the Semantic WebTwo years ago, we interviewed the W3C's Chief Architect Philippe Le Garet on the implementation of the semantic Web with data and video. Philippe addresses the pioneeering work of Joost in creating rich metadata around its content. Unfortunately Joost is closing shop, according to a report on TechCrunch.I interviewed Sir last week in Washington at the Embassy of Finland at a technology symposium presented by Finland's Technology Academy Foundation. Here is a 37-minute video of Sir Tim on stage at the event with New York Times reporter Steve Lohr. My first interview with Sir Tim was about the open data initiative and the U.S. and British governments.Andy Plesser, Executive Producer www.beet.tv

SEARCH ANY STORY YOU HEAR ON THE PODCAST Skype s Chances by Andrew McCaskey Skype Implosion I think that there is a more than even chance that Skype will implode. And if that happens, it will be a major loss. The news over the weekend that the two Skype founders have sued not only eBay and Sierra Partners, but ex-Joost executive Mike Volpi and a UK investment house indicate to me that this has moved way beyond a business case and into the personal. Joost was probably one of the most highly hyped introductions in the past three or four years. Fast out of the gate, the officially santioned Hulu was dismissed as a joke. Something happened along the way, and it s coming back to haunt the Skype transaction. Apparently, as Joost was scrambling to change from a peer-to-peer architecture (the original configuration that kept transmission bandwidth expenses low), Volpi became aware of some technical secrets that got passed along to eBay, without the knowledge or permission of Friis and Zennstrom. Not only double crossed by a partner, but making a fortune at the same time. With all parties being as rich as kings, there s no need to seek further gain except to fund revenge. The Skype founders (and the underlying bits for Kazaa, Morpheus and half a dozen others) have nothing they want so much as to sink Volpi. And if they have to bring down a service that keeps 400 million people in touch, they ll do so. That s the game that only rich guys can play well. bswlatino.com Saludos, soy Pili con lo mas reciente en la technologia.

THE FTC has approved GOOGLE s $3.1 billion acquisition of DoubleClick, but the deal still requires acceptance by the European Commission. In conjunction with its decision the FTC released a set of guidelines for the burgeoning online ad industry, recommending greater consumer control over privacy and online tracking. Privacy issues have been a major concern surrounding the merger, as Google builds an ever-larger collection of consumer data. European officials, however, say the law limits them to considering the anti-competitive ramifications of the deal. The EC s final decision is expected by April 2nd. AOL has completed its acquisition of targeted advertising company QUIGO. The deal will give AOL expanded ability to place contextual ads on its own properties as well as third-party sites. Quigo is now a fully-owned subsidiary working under AOL s Platform A division. COMEDY CENTRAL will resume production for both The Daily Show and The Colbert Report on January 7th. The shows are planning to return without writers, another major blow to the WGA strike. The Guild issued a statement criticizing Comedy Central for resuming production. In related news, the Guild granted a waiver requesting WGA writers for the Independent Spirit Awards, just days after denying a similar request for The Golden Globes. A waiver request is still pending for The Oscars but the Guild has indicated it will be rejected. VEOH claims to have grown from 2.5 million unique monthly viewers to 21.5 million during 2007 - a 760% increase. According to company figures, Veoh served 30 million hours of content during November alone and is seeing 900,000 installations of VeohTV per month. However, the most important statistic may be this: Veoh says that 40% of its views occur during prime-time TV hours. LIFETIME is planning to embrace online video for three new reality shows dedicated to fashion, dating and party-planning. MyLifetime.com will feature supplemental short clips as well as full-length streaming episodes before the shows premiere on TV. Video fashion tips, online chats and more will offer increased engagement for viewers. Previews will also be available on iTunes and Yahoo. Get the full story at http://www.Media30.com
