No excuses on the lateness of this one other than just not having the consecutive time all week to edit the show the way I usually do. Next week *should* be better. We're getting ready to go to Penny Arcade Expo and already have a lot of interviews lined up with companies, and we hope to be streaming LIVE from the show floor sometime during the weekend. There was a Wii update and a new Metroid Prime 3 Preview channel. Microsoft representatives at SIGGRAPH informed us that DirectX 10.1 is coming and no current hardware supports it. Great way to stick it to your devoted customers! In Finland, Microsoft demoed XNA using a Wii Remote thanks to being able to use third party .NET libraries in PC compiled XNA programs. Halo 3 is being cross marketed like a movie with tie-ins with 7-11 and Mountain Dew. Circuit City has subpoenaed CheapAssGamer.com and DVDTalk.com to give information about a forum user posting their weekly sale ads early. Our midpoint song is "Re: Your Brains" by Jonathan Coulton, who will be performing at PAX. Then we attempt to define "hardcore gamer" and then take calls about an extra channel in the Wii and discuss the Stranglehold demo. An interesting question arises: which is a better value for $60 to you: A 60 hour experience that is slow to get into but has some great experiences (peaks and valleys) or a 10 hour experience that is intense 100% of the time?

Our kitchen got a surprise mini-makeover featuring Ikea furnishings courtesy of the show Dream Home with the wonderful Lisa Quinn! It's now supra-organized and has some nice new accoutrements we're perhaps a little too stoked about . Today's recipe is inspired by Palak Paneer, a delicious Indian spinach dish, and it's full of flavor and nutrition. Tanja has so much energy from all those healthy greens, she can't stop dancing, no matter how much you might wish otherwise! Big thanks to Dream Home, Lisa Quinn, and Ikea. Also, a special thanks to Jonathan Coulton for the use of his hilariously awesome song "Ikea." Visit his Website to lavish praise, cash, and half-pony half-monkey monster dolls on him. Cilantro-Curry Spinach: Serves 2 as entree, 4 as side dish Large bunch spinach (about 4C tightly packed) 1 Avocado, cubed Sauce: 1 bunch cilantro leaves (about 1 1/2C packed) 1/2C chopped tomato 4 sun-dried tomato halves, soaked in 1C filtered water 1/4C olive oil, plus 1T for spinach 2T onion, chopped 1T ginger root, peeled and minced Small clove garlic, minced 1/2 jalapeno, deseeded and chopped 1T cumin 1Tcoriander 1T curry powder 1t raw honey or agave syrup Sea salt to taste Ground cashews to garnish Soak the sun-dried tomatoes in the water until they are quite soft, (about 30 minutes) and reserve the soak water. Place washed spinach in large bowl and add a dash of sea salt and 1T of the oil, then massage spinach until wilted and tender. Add all sauce ingredients to a blender or food processor and blend until smooth and pour-able, adding tomato soak water as needed to thin. Toss cubed avocado with the spinach, top with sauce and garnish with ground cashews. Tags: Dream Home, Lisa Quinn, Palak Paneer, Tanja, Ikea, Jonathan Coulton

Sex, Drugs and Updating Your Blog Jonathan Coulton on The Merlin Show Fun story by Clive Thompson in today s New York Times Magazine about what some people are coming to call Artist 2.0 (or Music 2.0 ) the post-plastic-disc world of musicians like Jonathan Coulton and The Hold Steady, who are actively engaging with their fans and not relying on the old school spray and pray approach to music marketing that s still in practice by the majors and their foundering artistic properties. Selected quotes from Clive s article (plus clickable video of my interviews with Jonathan Coulton): More than 3,000 people, on average, were visiting his site every day, and his most popular songs were being downloaded as many as 500,000 times; he was making what he described as “a reasonable middle-class living” — between $3,000 and $5,000 a month — by selling CDs and digital downloads of his work on iTunes and on his own site Coulton realized he could simply poll his existing online audience members, find out where they lived and stage a tactical strike on any town with more than 100 fans, the point at which he’d be likely to make $1,000 for a concert. It is a flash-mob approach to touring: he parachutes into out-of-the-way towns like Ardmore, Pa., where he recently played to a sold-out club of 140 . In total, 41 percent of Coulton’s income is from digital-music sales, three-quarters of which are sold directly off his own Web site. Another 29 percent of his income is from CD sales; 18 percent is from ticket sales for his live shows. The final 11 percent comes from T-shirts, often bought online I also like how Clive highlighted the challenges of maintaining a virtual relationship with hundreds or thousands of people. And, I ll bet a lot of bands would love to get their hands on the software robot that helps The Hold Steady speed up the tedious process of adding new friends to their MySpace. Really good article. Nice work, as always, Clive. In our recent interviews (part 1 and part 2) for The Merlin Show, Jonathan Coulton addressed some of these issues as well as discussing many of the other challenges and joys of working on your own and outside the system. Very inspiring fellow. May 01, 2007

This is episode #35, for May 1st, 2007. (Download MP3 - Listen to Streaming audio) Hello again! We are proving that old podcasters never die, they just smell that way. Website updates: FlixCastLive.com on indefinite hold. ProcrastinatorsGuilde.com also on hold, but did you expect anything less? Verbivorous.com is not on hold, though it is definitely not getting as much of my time as I d like. In fact, there s a possibility of working with Farpoint Media s RateYourBooks.com. LILITH S LOVE podiobook still on hold. Though, I did recently add a page to the sequel. Why s this still on hold, a year later? Well, besides the usual, I wanted this to be a project recorded with friends, and everyone s schedules are not meshing well. Moreover, while reading what we had so far (we had two chapters down) I felt that it needed a new coat of polish for the purposes of reading aloud . I plan to edit the book to this end and then I think it will just be Michelle and I recording it. So what else is keeping us so frak n busy? Life, in general. Work, kids, divorce, taxes, health Definitely planning for La Bal Masque Nocturne. MasqueNocturne.com has a new face lift and updates. No Ball in 2007. Instead, bigger and better in 2008. Smaller events in 2007 to raise funds and awareness for the ball. Current ideas are LARP/RPG events and artwork galleries/contests. Also hoping to create a fundraiser music CD. Potential new site to come: A podcasting event/google map mashup: http://www.shaurette.net/geovents This was by request of Evo Terra for something that could be used to map podcasting events listed on upcoming.org on a Google Map. It s simple but functional. Speaking of Evo, he recently asked for volunteers to help optimize his blog at FunAnymore.com and I volunteered. We shall see how well I can redecorate. We met up with Evo, Mike, and Summer at the AZ Book Festival. I knew they were going to be there, but with other stuff going on, we did not arrive in time for book signings. But somewhere along the way I did NOT hear that the lovely and talented MUR LAFFERTY was going to be there! Man, I would have camped out with TRICKS OF THE PODCASTING MASTERS and various MAGE RPG books for her to sign. FRAK! Instead, when we got there, at the end of Jim Butcher s panel, I realized that the young couple with a lovely daughter sitting nearby was Mur Lafferty, her husband Jim Van Verth, and their daughter! Michelle and I chatted with Evo and his lovely wife Sheila, and then he had to go on stage to moderate some panels. I whispered to Michelle, I m not absolutely sure, but uh, I think that s Mur Lafferty, as I pointed to the lady wearing a Beta Clone T-shirt. (Jim was wearing a Code Monkey shirt rock on!) Anyway, Michelle said, You should go introduce yourself. I TOTALLY pussed out, lapsed into geeky admiration shyness mode, and said, Uh, no. I couldn t do that. So she stood up to walk over, and as she did, I said, Make sure you tell her your boyfriend is too chicken-shit to say Hi. So she did. She walked over, out of earshot, introduced herself and asked if she was in fact Mur Lafferty. She was. I shrank even lower. Then Michelle shouted over to me, Told you so! I imagine I was very red at this point, and not from the Phoenix sun. Some more mumbling later, and before I know what s happened, Mur has walked over to meet me. Me. Some shmuck from Phoenix. That s how frak n cool Mur is. But more importantly, that s how awesome Michelle is. Speaking of podiobook authors: Scott Sigler is my Shamakath! (That should be a T-Shirt if it isn t already!) On April 1st, Scott Sigler did the unthinkable. ANCESTOR hit #7 overall on Amazon.com, hit #1 on the Amazon SciFi list, and held the #1 spot in Horror for three days. Also, please note, you can still download ANCESTOR as a PDF: http://scottsigler.podshow.com/2007/03/19/ancestor-pdf/ We mentioned George Hrab s Geologic Podcast; some funny, smart stuff there my friends. We wrapped up the episode with a special rendition of Jonathan Coulton s First of May , recorded by an all-star list of podcasters to benefit the Joe Murphy Memorial Fund. Fun to listen to, and Joe would have loved it. You guys rock! Many props to the ADD Cast for making that possible. That wraps up another episode of Is This Thing On? Thanks for listening. FAP509: Expert interview with Mitch Joel, CNN coverage of student loan industry, Jonathan Coulton Student Financial Aid News + From CNN: Cozy arrangements between colleges and the companies that lend their students billions of dollars are far more widespread than anticipated, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo told The Associated Press Tuesday, just as two more college financial aid officers were suspended amid a probe into the $85 billion industry. + Cuomo would not divulge where the burgeoning investigation is headed next, including whether more subpoenas are on the way. But he said the investigation could lead to criminal charges against high-ranking officials at both lending companies and universities. + On Tuesday, Widener University in Pennsylvania placed Walter Cathie, the dean of financial aid at Widener, on leave. Cuomo's office said Cathie was paid $80,000 by Student Loan Xpress since 2005. Investigators said they believed Cathie had an agreement with the company to market its services to graduate schools, receiving fees based on loan volume. + Also on Tuesday, Capella University, a Minneapolis, Minnesota-based online school, said it suspended its director of financial aid after he acknowledged accepting consulting fees from Student Loan Xpress. + Financial aid director Timothy Lehmann was put on paid administrative leave after Cuomo's office said he received more than $13,000 in fees from the company. Capella President Michael Offernan says Lehmann disclosed the payments last Friday. + The school is cooperating with Cuomo's office and doing an internal investigation as well, Offernan said. + "No one is even defending the situation anymore," he said. + Cuomo said he suspects "dozens" of financial aid officers around the country have similar arrangements that he has called deceptive, unethical and at times, illegal. + Last week, Cuomo sent subpoenas to SLM Corp., commonly known as Sallie Mae, requesting information on any current or former employees who had worked at the Education Department over the past six years. + From NASFAA: "Starting this fall, a scholarship created to boost Black student enrollment at Northeastern University will be open to White students, one of several policy changes the university has taken to avoid becoming the target of an anti-affirmative action lawsuit," Diverse: Issues In Higher Education reports. "The Boston institution is not alone. Numerous schools nationwide have chosen to open their once racially targeted scholarships to White students in an effort to avoid equal protection lawsuits." Scholarship Update + Girls Going Places Entrepreneurship Award Program is Guardian's annual initiative designed to reward the enterprising spirits of girls ages 12 to 18. Guardian awards prizes to 15 girls who demonstrate budding entrepreneurship; are taking the first steps toward financial independence; and make a difference in their school and communities. Prizes totaling $30,000 are awarded to three top winners and 12 finalists each year, to further their entrepreneurial pursuits. + A nominee must be age 12 to 18 as of December 31, 2006. Additionally, the nominee must be enrolled in middle school or high school as of December 31, 2006. Finally, the nominee must be a US legal resident. + 250 personal statement addressing your thoughts on entrepreneurship, business leadership, financial independence, or giving back to the community, typed on 8 1⁄2 x 11 paper. 750 word letter of recommendation endorsing you as an accomplished young entrepreneur, typed on 8 1⁄2 x 11 paper, written by an adult (age 18 years and over) who must be a US legal resident. FAP481: Mega Free Stuff Friday, expense reports from PHEAA, sweet scholarship, Jonathan CoultonFAP481: Mega Free Stuff Friday, expense reports from PHEAA, sweet scholarship, Jonathan Coulton
from Financial Aid Podcast Daily Free Internet Radio On Demand
March 02, 2007

FAP481: Mega Free Stuff Friday, expense reports from PHEAA, sweet scholarship, Jonathan Coulton Student Financial Aid News + College rankings, such as those published annually by U.S. News & World Report, are typically thought to factor into a consumer's perception of an institution. Plenty has been written about how high school students, parents and college counselors respond to the list. But what about state legislatures? + In the first draft of a working paper, two economists argue that for public institutions, a correlation exists between inclusion in the U.S. News rankings and a rise in state funding per student. "The Power of Information: How Do U.S. News Rankings Affect the Financial Resources of Pubic Colleges?," available through the National Bureau of Economic Research, is intended to offer a snapshot of how news media coverage of higher education influences public policy. + Documents that a court ordered the Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Authority to release show many intriguing expenses paid for by the state student loan agency. The Patriot-News, one of the news organizations that sued for the documents, reported on expenses such as chartering of a Lear jet, tickets to major league baseball games, and tuxedo rentals. + Expenses included $1,734 for a March 2004 dinner for four at Mastro's Ocean Club in Scottsdale, Ariz., billed as a place "where price doesn't matter." + A travel itinerary for Dick Willey, PHEAA's president and CEO, showed he chartered a Lear jet in October 2004 to travel with four or five others to Helena, Mont., among other destinations over four days. + A hotel bill for one employee who traveled to Dallas included charges for six movie rentals totaling $79. There was no indication that the employee paid those charges. + One receipt for a four-day stay at the Sanibel Harbour Resort & Spa on Florida's Sanibel Island in June 2004 totaling $1,267 included a $14 beverage charge from the pool bar. There was no indication that business was done there. + PHEAA doesn't allow employees to charge bar bills "unless they are taking a client to dinner," New said. + A $775 charge appeared for state Rep. Joseph Markosek to fly nonstop from Pittsburgh to Palms Springs, Calif., for a trip March 7 to 10, 2005. Markosek, one of 16 legislators who serve on PHEAA's board, said he went there as a board representative to a student aid conference to meet with clients. + Agency funded by federal student loans + Legislation introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives Thursday would allow the Education Department to provide up to $500 million over five years in grants to colleges that were closed for at least 30 days by Hurricane Katrina and continue to suffer from the damage. The grants, which would be distributed through the department's Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education, could be used for faculty salaries and incentives and student scholarships. The bill's sponsors say the area needs its colleges and universities to be restored so they can help drive economic and cultural recovery in the region. FAP479: How to network at conferences, podcasting changing governments, dance scholarship, Jonathan Coulton Student Financial Aid News + From NASFAA - hey, we changed the FAFSA! + And yes, WE did it. I may have done the recording, but without every single one of you listening, sending in comments, feedback, etc. I would have given up this show long ago. The community of the Financial Aid Podcast did this together. + Speaking of which, TODAY is the deadline for a lot of states - file your FAFSA online + The U.S. House of Representatives approved legislation Tuesday that would end a federal rule that limits that size of Pell Grant awards for students at low-cost colleges. The practice, known as tuition sensitivity, has particularly affected students at community colleges, especially those, like in California, that charge very low tuitions. The House legislation, which was co-sponsored by Rep. George Miller and Rep. Howard P. (Buck) McKeon, the chairman and senior Republican, respectively, on the House Education and Labor Committee, would repeal the rule for the 2007-8 fiscal year, increasing Pell awards by an average of $108 for the 96,000 students affected by the current restriction. Scholarship Update + American Harlequin Dance Scholarship + Deadline November 1, 2007 + In an effort to provide better opportunities for young people pursuing performing arts careers, American Harlequin established an annual "Dance Scholarship Program." Our first annual program in 1999 resulted in $10,000 in scholarship monies being awarded. Now we award $25,000 each year to twenty lucky individuals. Just as we did in previous years, since we are not in a position to judge the artistic merits or financial situation of the applicants, we will have a random drawing to select the winners. We leave the nominations to you, the teachers, to make a judgment about the students you support. Our hope is to offer a little financial help to some lucky young people who wish to continue in whatever form of dance helps fulfill their lives. All the applicant information must be filled in. The certification is then to be completed by the dance instructor. + Details at our free college student scholarship search site News You Can Use + How to network + Business cards - bookmarks for First Life + Get 250 free + Conversational hooks give people things to latch onto + Not just conversation starters, but also in conversation materials + Give to get + Make sure the backend is ready + Social media resume example + After the conference, 6 tips from community developer Chris Brogan 1.
