John Vanderslice & the Magik Magik Orchestra "Promising Actress"

John Vanderslice & the Magik Magik Orchestra "Promising Actress"

http://yourstru.ly/ Shortly after meeting John Vanderslice and Minna Choi in the lobby of the SF Conservatory of Music, a good-natured debate about the NBA playoffs became the best ice breaker in awkward history. The fact is, JV and Minna make a great team; the level of mutual respect bouncing back and forth between the two of them is like watching Stockton and Malone mid pick and roll. John trusts Minna to dissect a songs DNA and reassemble it as a new organisma Frankensteinwith added limbs and digits, a wider range of grunts, and a much smoother gate. This is the first of our three-part series shot at the SF Conservatory with JV and the incredibly talented performers of the Magik Magik Orchestra. The remaining two can be found on Yours Truly at http://yourstru.ly ... Song of the Siren: Cigarettes and Heartbreak

Song of the Siren: Cigarettes and Heartbreak

UPCOMING ALBUM, City Lights Are Blinding You IN THE STREETS THIS JUNE 2008 Song of the Siren s upcoming debut, City Lights Are Blinding You, is a no-frills showcase of the band s ever-growing abilities. Their unique sound unraveled before their very ears as their fresh, catchy songs were warmed to a timeless glow by vintage sensibility. Recorded live to 2” tape at John Vanderslice s Tiny Telephone studio in San Francisco in fall 2007, Song of the Siren and producer Garry Ventura were fortunate to be assigned to work with engineer Justin Phelps (Cake, Mars Volta). Phelps invited the band to finish their record at his own studio, Hyde Street Studio C, which had hosted bands like CCR and Jefferson Airplane. Finally, their record was mastered at the renowned The Plant Studios by recording guru John Cuniberti (Satriani, Neville Brothers). INSTRUMENTZ: Skinz. Smash. Anthony Petrocchi Sixstring. Your Columbus Weekend: 4/11 - 4/13 2008

Your Columbus Weekend: 4/11 - 4/13 2008

from donewaiting.com on April 10, 2008

The New Pornographers The weather is getting better in Columbus, people, so that means you should do your best to spend time inside our sweaty rock clubs. Here s what s up: Friday It s been some time since The New Pornographers have been in Columbus, and this time out they re upgrading to the larger Newport Music Hall. Their last album, Challengers, was on my favorite albums of 2007 list, so you can imagine I am pretty excited about this. Opening the show is Okkervil River, a band that could headline on their own. Saturday Over the last few years, CD101 Day has not had any major headliners. While earlier versions brought bands like The Black Keys and Dresden Dolls, the more recent versions have been made up of rising bands who have yet to make their mark. And while I m always a little disappointed that there s never a bigger name involved, I also think it s a good thing to have a radio station put together a show with bands of this smaller size and get behind it both on the radio and with an affordable $5 price tag. Saturday s version at Promowest includes such rising stars as The Whigs, Von Iva, The Duke Spirit as well as locals The Whiles (who have not updated their website since the Reagan administration). Sunday John Vanderslice (mp3) returns to Columbus for an early show at Skullys. Yesssss. The last time he was here was when we brought him to an early Monday show at High Five. That show was great, so I m expecting this one to be 30 times better. Also on Sunday, and also early, Times New Viking are playing Bourbon St for what they re calling their last Columbus show in awhile. Details here.

Buildings Breeding: A Great Divorce in April

Buildings Breeding: A Great Divorce in April

from Puddlegum on January 01, 2008
Duration: 0
Buildings Breeding is shopping their next album, A Great Divorce, around to labels. As of yet no label is named, though things are looking good. We re told to expect the disc in April. Buildings Breeding have made two songs available, Lowest Light, and Rushing Red. First impressions remind us of Camera Obscura meets Bishop Allen with a surf feel. A Great Divorce will be an album to look for in three months, as you ll surely read about it on your favorite blogs. Buildings Breeding - Lowest Light Buildings Breeding - Rushing Red A Great Divorce was recorded at John Vanderslice s Tiny Telephone studio, produced by Aaron Prellwitz (Sun Kil Moon). Buildings Breeding is now a four-piece band: Chris Larsen, Melanie Glover, Evan Hart, and Chris Vogel. Their influences range from Beatles, Velvet Underground, Beach Boys, The Cardigans, The Shins, and Belle and Sebastian. Buildings Breeding was never meant to be a real band. Their songs were created as a bunch of love letters Christapher Larsen made for Melanie Glover while she was overseas. Buildings Breeding settled in as a fake myspace.com band from Chicago featuring four members — all alias for Larsen. (band bio) Buildings Breeding - A Great Divorce track listing: 1. Lowest Light 2. Rushing Red 3. Story Line 4. My Heart is Cloth and Pinned to My Shirt 5. The Kill 6. Arms Elbows (Shoe Gaze) 7. Horsemen (Seven Ribbons) 8. Pitter Patter 9. Stay Black 10. Skyline 11. Oh Lord! 12. The Ones We Love (Kicking) 13. Untitled Tags: Aaron Prellwitz, Buildings Breeding, Chris Larsen, Chris Vogel, Evan Hart, John Vanderslice, Melanie Glover, Tiny Telephone

John Vanderslice in concert. With host Bob Boilen. John Vanderslice is one of the most imaginative, prolific and consistently rewarding artists making music today. He's released six mostly conceptual solo albums in about as many years, all of them widely praised for the way they reflect Vanderslice's curious world of sonic and musical experimentation. Hear Vanderslice recorded live from Washington, D.C.'s Rock and Roll Hotel originally webcast on NPR.org September 22, 2007.
