Meet the Press: Graham flip flops on off shore drilling: Biden: You’re entitled to your own opinion, not your own facts
from Crooks and Liars June 22, 2008
On Meet the Press, Sen. Graham flopped on his original positions on off shore drilling in his neck of the woods and Sen. Biden laughs at his phony argument at about the 2:40 mark of the clip and cuts his flipped positions into itty, bitty pieces. Most of us know that we can t drill our way out of the problem, but McCain and Graham are turning into Wall Street Zombies that now believe ANWR and off shore drilling will be the answer. Download | Play Download | Play (h/t Heather) MR. WILLIAMS: Senator Graham, this is what people are talking about. Myrtle Beach Sun News, The Senate may consider lifting bans on exploring for oil and natural gas along the East and West coasts of the [U.S.] `I feel terrible about that, Graham said. `The worst thing we can do as a nation is taking the easy way out. If you start opening up offshore drilling, then you are buying time and you are not addressing the fundamental problem with fossil fuels. So you see the argument, you made it. Biden: hahaha Goober Graham says that the price increases on oil and gas have changed his mind and position. Why should it? Before he didn t want to take the easy way out on our energy crisis, but know .well McCain needs his help. The prices reflect badly on conservative principles that have governed our country under Bush. Since Graham is a co-conspirator to the Bush administration why should we even consider his views on energy and oil at all? They have no credibility and should be ignored. At least they should be challenged by the media instead of having two different camps debating about it. Change in leadership and political philosophy is needed not Lawrence Kudlow talking points. If only the media would take the time to explain the issues to the peeps instead of reading press releases. As Biden said it ll take ten years to even begin getting any oil. And why didn t Williams ask Graham to explain himself after Biden s answer? He went to another topic. Full transcript below the fold via MSNBC: MSNBC: MR. WILLIAMS: Senator Graham, The Greenville, Greenville News, September 20th, 2005, Objections to drilling off the Carolinas center on the impact of tourism and the environment. SEN. GRAHAM: Mm-hmm. MR. WILLIAMS: Said Senator Lindsey Graham: `All of our coastal communities I ve talked with believe offshore drilling would be a detriment to our economy along the coast. I tend to agree with that. What changed? SEN. GRAHAM: Four dollar a gallon gas. MR. WILLIAMS: And what about the future 10 years down the road? SEN. GRAHAM: Right. Right. MR. WILLIAMS: You mentioned energy independence, where does that conversation come in? SEN. GRAHAM: Well, what you do is you have a supply-demand problem. The more domestic supply, the better we are off as a nation. But to get away from fossil fuels in general is a goal of Senator McCain. One thing you do on the power side is add nuclear power. We cannot address climate change without replacing oil and coal-fired plants with nuclear power. But when it comes to domestic supply, we re talking about 50 miles off the coast of South Carolina with the consent of the legislature where the state gets half the revenue. I think in an environmentally sound way we can extract deep sea exploration oil and gas off our coast that will allow us to be more energy independent. John is for that. I am for that. And I believe the state of South Carolina will be for that. SEN. BIDEN: We already can do that. Let s get the facts. You re entitled to your own opinion, not your own facts. Forty million acres leased offshore, number one. Number two, the first well to be dug from the time they lease, if Lindsey gives them access to more area, it ll take 10 years from the time the lease is let to the time oil comes out of the bottom of the sea in the new leases. MR. SEN. GRAHAM: Yeah, and, and here s the honest well, here, here s my answer. At $4 a gallon, time is not on our side. It is affecting food prices, it is affecting the quality of life in America. I have a lot of low-income people in South Carolina who drive the most inefficient cars. We re talking about allowing exploration in a deep sea area off the coast of South Carolina, Virginia and North Carolina with state consent that will enhance dramatically our supplies. I am willing to do that in an environmentally sensitive manner. Yes, $4 a gallon has changed my view of this; $135 dollars a barrel has changed my view of this. I think the economic impact of not adjusting now is going to be devastating in the to the country short and long-term, and therefore I have changed my position. SEN. BIDEN: No short-term consequence of additional leases, period, 10 years minimum. Two, better to invest in windmills offshore, alternative energy offshore, give those people a break. And three, the change is called an election.

Barack Obama Pins Bush Economic Woes On John McCain & It Looks Like A Good Fit
from RetroVision Media June 10, 2008
The highlights are: A. Barack Obama's promises to Israel that he may have a difficult time honoring in the future. B. Barack Obama fires first salvo across John McCain's economic bow while only receiving harmless smoke and mirrors in return. Obama has successfully pinned the Bush administration's economic woes on McCain like a tail on the donkey. From our view, he wears it well. C. Country bracing for higher fuel and food prices as farmers fear modest crops this year. With Ben Bernanke signaling an end to rate cuts to stem inflation, the country is in for a rough ride.

RetroVision Media's Analysis of Obama's Win and Clinton's Refusal To Concede
from RetroVision Media June 04, 2008
Barack Obama, the nominee of the Democratic Party as of last night’s final primary contest, awakens this morning to the nightmare of a shotgun wedding with Hillary Clinton as his running mate. After clearing every hurdle to achieve what no person of color, man or woman has in the history of American politics, he now has to find a way to placate a bunch of self-centered losers from forcible glomming on to his success. Hillary Clinton failed to do the right thing, the stand up thing, and the proper thing by congratulating Barack Obama on winning the needed number of delegates to capture the nomination. Intentionally, she snatched the door open to hijack her way back into the White House by hanging on to Obama’s coattails. Somehow, she has deluded herself and the fringe element within her core support that the Obama camp gives a rat’s ass about what she wants. America is a country that loves a winner and shuns its losers. There is little room for disgruntled second place finishers.

RetroVision Media Covers McClellan's Hot Book That is Heating Up Rove's Ass
from RetroVision Media May 28, 2008
As much as we hate rats and rat bastards, many times it is the only way to get to the truth. This is especially true when the government and the power that runs it is involved. Scott McClellan’s new book "What Happened" leveled the hammer big time on the Bush administration without mercy, leaving Karl Rove’s ass hanging in the wind. With John Conyers, heading up the House Judiciary Committee shoving a subpoena up Karl’s butt to force some conversation, conversation that Karl and the rest of the White House crew has been thumbing their noses at, maybe the tool needed to give Rove the tight screw he has coming. To date Karl has been playing the executive privileged game saying he and his “Boyz” are above it all. But this well timed book release is forcing the all the ugly and largely ignored stories of what was really going on behind the scenes that led this country to war at a time that has to have Karl “The Pillsbury Dough Boy” shitting bricks

RetroVision Media Covers The Cost Conscious Holiday Weekend
from RetroVision Media May 27, 2008
Returning from any three-day weekend generally leaves some of us a little sluggish and lacking that creative spark. Fortunately for me, an anonymous comment left at the blog gave me the spark for today’s podcast. Our last podcast posting covered the possibility of worldwide despair due to global disasters along with food and fuel shortages topped off with domestic and international economic downturns that last beyond our comfort zones and levels of measurable tolerance. We also mentioned that because of said poor economic outlook and global catastrophes many would be lucky to have a backyard to have a backyard Bar BQ in this year. Based on most reports from airline hotels and restaurants many did just that and stayed close to home.

Sen. Joe Biden: The President had me negotiate with Gaddafi: He should fire Gates and Rice as appeasers
from Crooks and Liars May 18, 2008
Sen. Joe Biden was on ABC s THIS WEEK and took President Bush and John McCain to the woodshed over their latest attacks on the entire Democratic Party including Barack Obama over their negotiating in any form with Iran. He busts Bush for being a complete hypocrite. Wow, who knew? Bush asked Biden to negotiate with Gaddafi and he did. And I think it turned out pretty good. And since Gates and Condi want to talk with Iran too, what does Biden think about that? Fire those appeasers now! I m sure McCain will agree. STEPHANOPOULOS: It sounds like you re calling it hypocrisy. BIDEN: Well, I should I m trying to be more polite, but I shouldn t be. It was ridiculous. This is president this is pure, unadulterated politics. And the last point I ll make maybe the president doesn t know I ll be a smart guy, here maybe he doesn t know what s going on in his own administration. But as soon as he gets back, he should fire, as appeasers, Gates STEPHANOPOULOS: Secretary of defense? BIDEN: and Rice secretary of defense and secretary of state. STEPHANOPOULOS: Why? BIDEN: Because they both Gates as recently as a week ago said, we ve got to sit down and talk with the Iranian directly. Download | Play Download | Play (h/t the very wonderful Heather) Fill transcript provided by ABC news below the fold STEPHANOPOULOS: How about the substance of what the president was trying to say? Because John McCain picked up on it. He said basically, you know, we have a big difference here. Barack Obama wants unconditional talks with the Iranians. We don t. Here s what Senator McCain said. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) MCCAIN: Talking, not even with soaring rhetoric, unconditional, and unconditional meetings with the man who calls Israel a stinking corpse, and arms terrorist who kills Americans, will not convince Iran to give up its nuclear program. It is reckless. (END VIDEO CLIP) STEPHANOPOULOS: Senator Obama has said that his State Department, his National Security Council would engage in unconditional talks with the Iranians. BIDEN: Let s put this in perspective. The reason why we d be in so much trouble if John McCain were president and I love him is because of what you just heard. What s the alternative to talking with a country that s building a nuclear weapons, attempting to, that in fact is helping kill Americans by supporting elements in Iraq that are killing Americans? You either talk; you go to war; or you maintain the status quo. Now, let s talk about talking. President Bush, the White House, called me, several years ago, told me Air Force Two was waiting for me at Andrews Air Force Base; would I get on the plane and go meet with Gadhafi, a real known terrorist, personally, a terrorist personally responsible for killing kids at the school I went to, Syracuse University, blowing up that Pan Am flight. The president of the United States asked me to go. He cut a deal with Gadhafi, directly. It was a smart thing to do. He gave up his nuclear weapons, Gadhafi. What s the second thing? We re in Korea, right now, George. You want to put the hit list to the worst guys in the world? How about Kim Jong Il? They have proliferated nuclear technology, put us in jeopardy, and other nations around the world. What is the president of the United States doing, writing letters saying, Dear Mr. Chairman referring to him. They ve cut a deal. They ve cut a deal. The president of the United States of America, last time I was in Iraq, was trying to set up, and recently asked for a third meeting with the Iranians, to talk with them about what s going on in Iraq. This is sophistry. This is ridiculous.

Joe Biden on Bush’s appeasement statement: ‘This is bulls**t.
from Crooks and Liars May 15, 2008
Senator Joe Biden quickly responded to President Bush s calculated and idiotic attacks in Jerusalem. This is bulls**t. This is malarkey. This is outrageous. Outrageous for the president of the United States to go to a foreign country, sit in the Knesset and make this kind of ridiculous statement, Download | Play (audio still uploading) CNN: Democrats on Thursday condemned President Bush s insinuation that they would be appeasing terrorist states by holding talks, with one going so far as to call his remarks bulls**t Joe Biden, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, said that if the president disagrees so strongly with the idea of talking to Iran, then he needs to fire his secretaries of state and defense, both of whom Biden said have pushed to sit down with the Iranians.

RetroVision Media Reviews and Recommends The Ruins and Street Kings
from RetroVision Media April 16, 2008
Okay, we know it’s Black Box theater Wednesday and we should have some local, affordable theater to recommend as per usual, but quit frankly, we did not see anything this week that would rate your attention. We did however get to some good stuff on the silver screen. The Ruins and Street Kings are our recommendations for an evening of kick ass action and scary spine chilling suspense. In Street Kings, Forest Whitaker as captain Jack Wander goes head to head with Keanu Reeves as detective Tom Ludlow, the kick ass detective being used by the captain to do the dirty work while he and the rest of his elite unit is raking in big dough from their own street drug sales. Whitaker is able to operate with immunity since he has the goods on all power figures in the Los Angeles political scene as well as the LAPD. This is a cool cop against cop, police corruption, internal affairs on the hunt for all the bad guys flick. This one is worth an afternoon in the theater just vegging to the action

Issue under Fire: Obama and the Second Amendment
from RetroVision Media April 15, 2008
Today, we thought it necessary and timely to revisit the issue of guns, gun control, the second amendment and how things work in the bigger cities. Our mayor Bloomberg, the NYCP Dept. Commissioner Ray Kelly, the loved ones of Sean Bell, (local man shot 50 times by police) and the officers on trial for the shooting are all trapped in this difficult situation because of the proliferation of weapons on the streets of New York. Stories like this as well as school shooting, Jr. High, High School, and college campuses are regular news items and have been getting worse every year. What Barack Obama is trying to get those in smaller, less densely populated areas of the country to understand is we need a compromise on this issue that all law abiding Americans can live with

Does General Petraeus Recommend a Troop Decrease?
from Where's the Outrage? April 08, 2008
Senator Joe Biden, Foreign Relations Committee Chairman, asked a question today. He pinned General David Petraeus on where Iraq is on a scale from one to 10 with regard to the war. Answering with a 10 would mean he would recommend a significant draw-down in troops. However, a one would mean that we need a significant increase in troop levels. Petraeus tried to bob-and-weave, but Biden quickly cornered him. He said that we are at a six or seven very politically safe parameters. ShareThis

Issue Under Fire: The Collaspe of a Nation
from RetroVision Media April 04, 2008
The magic word of the day is Collapse. The economy is collapsing, the healthcare system is collapsing, the public education system is collapsing, the National Guard is collapsing under the weight of the collapsing military, the nation’s infrastructure is collapsing along with the citizenry’s confidence in the elected leadership’s ability to break the fall. It’s not news to report that 81% of those polled feel the country is headed in the wrong direction. What is news, is the 19% that disagrees with the majority. Who, we wonder is that optimistic group that sees the nation’s current course as one to proceed on in a steady as she goes mode? Clearly, these are the corporate heads and their butt sniffing upper managers that are making out like bandits in a lawless and deregulated atmosphere. These must be that shadowy 1% and their well paid flunky crews that have always made big dough while the little guys and gals are forced to just make do. We think that collective 19% is the same

RetroVision Media
from RetroVision Media March 13, 2008
Despite our own headline, we think New Yorkers are being rather rough on former Gov. Spitzer considering he has been known for years as being a real hard-on. Given the dilemma of opting for the do it yourself plan and ending up blind like Lt. Gov. David Paterson or risking his career, marriage, and a lifetime of outstanding accomplishments for some naughty nooky must have been blue-ball busting difficult. But all things being considered, Mr. Spitzer probably should have elected to go with the more cost-effective method of dealing with his sexual addiction as he has clearly demonstrated a lack of price negotiating skills. At nearly five thousand bucks a pop, this randy dandy could have busted the family’s finances in no time. Was he not thinking of the children’s future when he forked over a roll of dough thick enough to choke a horse for a one hour roll in the hey?

Bill Clinton - unbeatable team
from Where's the Outrage? March 11, 2008
Bill Clinton was answering questions over the weekend when he was asked about a Hillary Clinton - Barack Obama team. He mentions what the polls clearly shows - Hillary wins in the rural areas and Barack wins in the major cities. Yes, that would be a great team BUT Now, this is what the former President doesn t mention. He doesn t say that Barack Obama could get another running mate that would also do well in the rural areas. He doesn t mention that Barack Obama would do far better as a presidential candidate if he choses someone with a great track record on Foreign Policy and/or Intelligence. Hillary Clinton adds little to Barack Obama in my opinion. This is NOT a knock on Hillary but instead, it is a criticism of her experience. She is a one term Senator. Obama is almost a one term Senator. They are both Democrats. They are both progressives. Clinton may have a little more of a conservative record but not much difference. Hillary Clinton would need someone like Jim Webb or John Kerry (both for their experience) to balance out a Hillary ticket in my opinion. Barack Obama would need a Bob Graham or Joe Biden (I have changed my mind on Binden). For more on my thinking on VP s. I did have a contest to see who could convince me of the best VP candidates and the winner s thoughts are here. barack obama, bill clinton, bob graham, Election 2008, foreign policy, jim webb, joe biden, john kerry, presidential candidate, rural areas, senator obama
