Author: iPodcast Added: Tue, 24 Jun 2008 18:24:26 -0800 Duration: 197Based on what I've seen so far, Spy Pens [1] haven't surpassed novelty quality. OhGizmo.com [2] pointed us toward a new one called the DVR Pen Recorder that stores up 30 hours of audio and video, but only at a resolution of 352x288. Sony's HDR-CX12 [3] Memory Stick Handycam camcorder uses "smile shutter technology" to automatically take photos of people when they smile. SpotCrime recently got TechCrunched [4]. It's a google map mashup that gives you a graphical representation of crime activity in a particular area on the map. Psystar is tempting fate again by selling an OSX rack server. iRetroPhone [5] is a rotary dial for iPhone. PortableApps.com [6] is a source for downloading small applications that run from a flash drive, including Firefox 3.

Their project is smaller than the average smartphone, but it won't be available in the U.S. until next year. Texas Intruments is also working on an lamp-free projector [3]. It combines a PhlatLight LED with a BrilliantColor chipset that will use 30 percent less power and deliever a much better picture. The Panasonic HDC-HS100 [4] is an HD consumer camera with 3 CMOS sensors the yeld unprecedented low-light performance. Author: iPodcast Added: Sun, 22 Jun 2008 21:23:54 -0800 Duration: 278I put up a survey earlier this week asking GeekBrief.TV [1] viewers to help me narrow down [2] the best gadgets stores to a top 10. Just before we shot the show, I tweeted asking if anyone else wanted to chime in. By the time we finished shooting, the results had changed somewhat. On the show the list is as follows: #10: A tie between ShopFosters.com [3] and Tigerdirect.com [4] #09: A tie between Newegg.com [5] and Perpetualkid.com [6] #08: SharperImage.com [7] #07: Brookstone.com [8] #06: Hammacher.com [9] #05: Firebox.com [10] #04: iwantoneofthose.com [11] #03: ACgears.com [12] #02: Red5.co.uk [13] #01: ThinkGeek.com [14]

Author: iPodcast Added: Sun, 22 Jun 2008 21:23:54 -0800 Duration: 237Today was Download Day and at the time I'm posting this episode, Firefox 3 [1] has been downloaded 2,205,910 times. It was also the release date of the Spore Creature Creator [2], the heavily anticipated precursor to Spore the game. Sony Ericsson's C905 [3] is mostly a 8.1 Megapixel Cybershot camera and a little bit a phone. It's beautifully designed and is probably following the best anti-iPhone stratagey a phone maker could. If the camera is the most important part of the phone to you, the C905 is probably a great choice. Dexrex [4] is an online backup system for your IM sessions. It works with most major IM services to create a searchable archive of all your chat sessions.

Author: iPodcast Added: Sun, 22 Jun 2008 21:23:54 -0800 Duration: 279People have been asking for it, and now it's inevitable. Qik [1] will be available for the iPhone. HP released v2 of their TouchSmart all-in-one computer. Through their Voodoo line, they also announced the Envy, a MacBook Air competitor, and the ever-so-expensive and sexy Omen Gaming PC [2]. The Microsoft Surface has been installed at the iBar at the Rio in Vegas. I don't think I'm cool enough to really understand if this is going to work out for the club crowd, but I am interested in watching drunk people use it. It's very important for you to watch the HD version of the show if you want to read the closed captioning during the Surface video. Author: iPodcast Added: Sun, 22 Jun 2008 18:52:48 -0800 Duration: 173t's not usually my nature to be snarky about a person, but on Brief 372, I make an exception. Yesterday, Peter Ha from CruchGear [1] posted a video from TheStreet.com [2], and I had to bring it to your attention. In the video, Gary Krakow [3], apparently an old-school tech journalist, is asked what Steve Jobs needs to do to get the iPhone [4] competitive in a corporate environment. His answer is crazier than anything my favorite Mr. Cranky Pants, John C. Dvorak [5] has ever said about Apple. Author: iPodcast Added: Sun, 22 Jun 2008 18:52:48 -0800 Duration: 201Amazon lowered the price of the Kindle by $40 [1]. I get asked on a regular basis if I would recommend it. Yes! It has hardware design flaws, but the reading experience is addictive. The TelePrompTer company I've used since the first year of GeekBrief.TV, just released a new version, the ProPrompter HD [2]. LaptopMag.com [3] had an interesting interview with Mary Lou Jepsen. She gave a bit of insight into what they're working on for the OLPC v2. Looks like they're integrating haptic technology.

Author: iPodcast Added: Sun, 22 Jun 2008 18:52:48 -0800 Duration: 363If you've thought about unlocking your Apple TV but didn't want to take the risk, aTV Flash [1] offers a great solution in the form of a simple USB flash drive. Plug it in and get all the advantages of an unlocked Apple TV. Take the drive out, and your Apple TV is back to being Cupertino approved. Seagate Showcase [2] is a new solution for expanding DVR storage up to 1TB. The Mytunes MP3 Amp [3] is a small speaker for you MP3 player that looks like a guitar amp. My elusive Neal makes his first official appearance on the Brief to talk about using the Wii Fit to loose 20 pounds. MakeOverMe.TV [4] is where both Neal and I will keep track of our WiiFitness. Because some people asked I put a clip from my hosting duties at the New York Festivals Innovative Advertising Awards. The full video is here.

Author: iPodcast Added: Sun, 22 Jun 2008 18:52:48 -0800 Duration: 230It's been an extremely slow day for gadget news, so I decided to jailbreak my iPhone today (or, rather, Neal's iPhone). I decided to use iFuntastic, recommended by TUAW. If you have your iPhone plugged in before opening iFuntastic [1], it immediately recognizes it and all all you have to do is click on "Unshackle", then follow directions. I installed the BSD Subsystem [2] since many third party apps require it, then I got to the fun part and installed Pool [3], and Twinkle [4]. I kept getting an error with Labyrinth [5], but it eventually installed. If you do get an error, try "Clear Queue", then try again. Sometimes that helps. I'll be playing and testing with it, and will keep you updated! Remember, jailbreaking your iPhone or iPod Touch voids the warranty and the geniuses will not help you!

Author: iPodcast Added: Sun, 22 Jun 2008 18:52:48 -0800 Duration: 255Despite the fact that I introduced the show as Brief #352, it's actually #353. Microsoft's attempt to acquire Yahoo reminds me of something that would happen in sixth grade, except instead of passing notes, the two companies keep passing Press Releases. Yahoo didn't respond to Microsoft's deadline for an answer and Mark Andreessen analyzed the situation [1] Apple upgraded the specs on the iMac [2], but everyone is really just waiting for the announcement of a 3G iPhone. The expectations are reaching frenzy status.

Author: iPodcast Added: Sun, 22 Jun 2008 18:52:48 -0800 Duration: 300I've been getting more and more requests for an updated behind-the-scenes look at our setup. We haven't changed equipment in over a year so I wasn't ready to do one. Well, to celebrate PodShow's name change to MEVIO [1], we changed our set. In this episode, I walk you through the new set, and explain the setup we use to produce GeekBrief.TV. It's in black and white because we're not quite finished and I thought it would be fun to do a kind of partial reveal. I forgot to mention the lapel microphone I use. It's listed below.
