Today, we continue our discussion with John Tantillo, The Marketing Doctor. John is a behavioral research psychologist with over twenty years of marketing experience. He is the President of the Marketing Department of America and regularly appears on Fox News and Fox Business News. Last time, we discussed the difference between a makeover and a brand-over. Let s get back to the conversation ___ ___ ___ Let s talk about social media strategy. Say you re a small business owner. You don t necessarily want to get on Facebook and have a Fan Page with only ten people. Would it be better to just be yourself on Facebook and tell people about your day, rather than setting up a Fan Page for your business? ___ ___ Yeah. I would say to first get accustomed to it. As a matter of fact, my Facebook Fan Page for the Marketing Doctor just started last week and I ve been on Facebook for a year or two. I preferred my personal page where I described what I liked and disliked, linked to my blogs and things like that. You just have to take the first steps. Like anything else in life, once you overcome the inertia, magical things happen. ___ ___ We met you online, John. We met you through another good friend, Jim Bouchard, who we also met online. It s amazing how powerful these tools are in placing every individual, every small business, close to par with large businesses. ___ ___ You could say that again! A small business is much more nimble to change. It s the difference between a forty-foot sailboat and a multi-ton carrier trying to change course. If I could talk a little bit to the contact with Jim Bouchard, it was very serendipitous. I met his wife Alex on Facebook. She asked me to look at her husband s web site and critique it. So I did, which was unique according to Alex. From that, Jim wrote back and thanked me. The point is that I didn t think I was going to meet Jim through Alex. It was nothing like that. I was trying to assist. Through that assist, we re here today. We never would have met if it weren t for social media. It s like going to a cocktail party but not leaving the house! ___ Thanks John so much for sharing your wisdom with us. We recommend that you get to know John better by checking out his site. He blogs, consults, speaks and offers great marketing tips for free in his online classroom. ___ Get the tips and tools you need to be a BIGG success. 3 Ways to Think Like a Black Belt

Today on The Bigg Success Show, we wrapped up our discussion with Jim Bouchard. Along with being a speaker, coach, author and Martial Arts Hall of Famer, Jim is one of the best people you could ever hope to meet. He helps people Think Like a Black Belt! Last time we talked about setting goals like a black belt. Let s get back to the conversation ___ ___ ___ Jim, I saw an interview with the author of The Richest Man in Town. As you re talking about levels, I remember an interview with one of men profiled in the book. He said he really just thought about the next plateau. What came through to me was that you have to think about that long-term goal so you set the direction, but then you put all your energy into getting to that next level as you ve described it. ___ ___ Right. That word plateau is interesting. Exactly the same thing happens to people on the way to black belt in martial arts. Sometimes you feel plateaus. There are places where you feel that you re not getting anywhere. Of course, that happens in business all the time as well. The irony is that, very often when we re experiencing that feeling, a lot of the work is getting done. But there s no burst of recognition. All of a sudden you get a rank or you attain a certain financial goal with your business and you feel it. There s a tangible reward there. The plateaus though, that s where you have to keep going. That s where the discipline part kicks in. And the perseverance part knocked down seven times, get up eight. I ve divided the Black Belt Mindset into three major sections perfection, confidence and leadership. We ve talked about perfection excellence, discipline and focus that are the action steps. Confidence really comes from doing that over and over again. That s where the perseverance aspect kicks in. That s where we re developing the courage and the power to keep going because we re facing those challenges. It s cyclical. It always kicks back to discipline because when the roads get rough and you feel you can t keep going you get knocked down that seventh time that s what gets you back up again. Confidence means you have some reasonable expectation that the outcome is going to be positive. The only way to get there is through experience. You can t gift somebody confidence. I don t know if that helps people look forward because you ve got to get punched in the nose a few times in order to really be successful. Read books like the one you mentioned that talk about business leaders or political leaders. These aren t people who, by and large, had a golden spoon in their mouth. These are people who got knocked around a lot and they kept going. ___ ___ We say you re the entrepreneur of your own life, whether you re an entrepreneur in the traditional sense or working your way up in the corporate world. Either way, once you make a decision on your direction, you have to understand that it s not just going to be easy. ___ ___ I couldn t agree more, Mary-Lynn. It s simple, but it s not easy. We make it too complicated. It s a decision! If you want to move forward, you just have to make a decision. Then you have to pull up your pants, turn your hat around and get going. We ve lived in abundance for so long that a lot of people feel entitled to be in certain places at certain times. When the going gets tough, they don t know how to deal with it because they haven t been there. But really it comes down to a decision. You re going to get busy living or get busy dying. ___ ___ We encourage everyone to get busy today building the Black Belt Mindset. ___ ___ That s strapping on the black belt. One of my Masters gave me this great line one time. He said, Your black belt isn t really something you strap on. It s something you carve out from inside yourself. In life or business, what could work better? ___ ___ I think it s interesting too that Mary-Lynn and I can look at what you ve done or you can look at what we ve done, but the reality is that everyone has to find their own path. So even if it worked for someone else, it doesn t mean that particular thing will work for you. The alternative is that it may work for you and never work for anybody else. As long as it works for you that one time it helps you get to that next level that s all that matters. ___ ___ We re so like-minded in that respect. These ideas that we re talking about discipline, focus, courage, perseverance do work for everybody because they re so fundamental. If you can get down to these simple characteristics and build upon them, then you re headed in the right direction. ___ ___ It s always such a pleasure to talk with you, Jim. Whenever we talk, I m always revved up for the rest of the day. It s just good, good stuff! ___ ___ That s because you guys are both black belts in bigg success! ___ You can learn more about Jim on his site. We can t recommend anyone more highly! Thanks Jim for sharing your time and wisdom with us! And we thank you for checking in with us today! Back to School season is upon us. Setting Goals Like a Black Belt

Today on The Bigg Success Show, we continued chatting with Jim Bouchard. Jim is a speaker, coach, author and Martial Arts Hall of Famer who helps people Think Like a Black Belt! Last time we talked about branding like a black belt. Now let s get to the conversation ___ ___ ___ The first word that comes to mind is that people talk about the black belt as a symbol of excellence. We ve talked about this before. We can couch excellence in the term perfection . Perfection isn t a destination; it s a never ending process. Excellence isn t something where you get to some level of attainment and then that s it. Excellence is an ongoing process. It s harder to keep a black belt than it is to earn one. It s harder to keep success in business than it is to get there. They always say your first million is the hardest. And then your second million is the hardest, right? ___ ___ The next million is the hardest. ___ ___ It s a constant process making sure you re staying current, making sure you re staying relevant and making sure you re still servicing the people that you want to service. That s really at the heart of it. The idea of excellence. Excellence implies action; it s a constant process of self-perfection. The way you get there is through discipline and focus. As far as I m concerned, discipline is the key to all of this. Discipline means doing whatever it takes to get where you want to go. You want bigg success, right? It s a series of small steps done on a daily basis when things are going well or when they re not. That s discipline. Motivation is an easy one. Everyone who starts a new business, everyone you guys coach, aren t they really motivated? They re happy and passionate. ___ ___ Yeah, it s exciting. It s a new adventure. ___ ___ Then about three or four years later, when they re taking a second on the house to keep the business going, the motivation starts to crumble a little bit. ___ ___ We were talking with a gentleman who works with a lot of small business owners. He said that he notices they start to wear down about sixteen months in. ___ ___ Yeah, that makes sense because, all of a sudden, the reality is staring them in the face. ___ ___ You re working so hard. You re always working. You know this as a business owner, Jim. Sometimes it just seems that there isn t time for yourself. You do start wearing down. ___ ___ Exactly. That s where the discipline part has to kick in. And focus. Let s talk about focus. If focus is unchecked, it becomes an obsession. We have to take care of our entire life. Three key areas of life to me are emotional, material and spiritual. We may let the emotional and spiritual sides deteriorate because we re focusing on the material. Sometimes that happens you need to focus a little more on one area than the other. Let s say there s an illness or one of your loved ones needs attention. Then you re going to focus a little more on the emotional side. That s okay. You just have to remember that in the greater scheme of things, there has to be a relative balance. If you find yourself hyper-focused in one area, you have to catch yourself and make sure you re planning to correct it. People ask about exercises to develop discipline and focus. The first thing I say is this, It ain t that hard. Make a decision and then go forward. You have to decide you re going to be a disciplined person. Then you just take something that you want or need to do, create a series of steps and go for it. Now, we can create exercises around that. That s fun sometimes. But really that s what it boils down to. Sometimes, like we talked about with the branding, we make it too complicated. ___ ___ Yeah, I was going to create an exercise to make myself be more disciplined, Jim. I just couldn t get around to it! ___ ___ I d be glad to help you, George. We ve got to get you into martial arts class! ___ ___ Ah, George is always goofing around! It seems to me, as I m listening to you talk, Jim, that when you are studying for a black belt, it s a lot of physical discipline you re learning this move or that move, when to use it or when not to but is mental discipline harder than physical discipline? ___ ___ They go together. So, all joking aside, when people ask me how to have more discipline, I tell them to pick a thing that has a logical goal or logical conclusion to it. Not to say that the black belt or anything is the end, but some measurable achievement. ___ ___ Let s say I want to keep my desk more organized. Something simple like that. ___ ___ Good, that s a great goal. To systemize this a little bit, I might walk you through belt ranks. Let s say we re going to get to black belt in desk organization! We re going to turn you into a Master Desk Organizer! ___ ___ Hye-yah! ___ ___ That s good! Take ten levels white, yellow, orange, purple. For the sake of time, I won t go through the whole thing. You get the idea. You go up through brown and then black belt. At each level, just outline a couple of steps. What s the simplest thing you can do to start the process of getting your desk organized? It might be just taking an inventory. What s on my desk? There s your white belt step. The yellow belt step might be deciding what to do with some of the stuff you don t want. Or I m going to choose what I want and what I don t want on my desk. So on and so forth. You just create a set of levels. It s very simple. ___ ___ I like that! ___ ___ Sometimes people do tasking without mindfully being aware of that end goal. We can task ourselves into busy work. That s not very effective. That s why the idea of a goal a black belt level in some sense is really important to us. ___ ___ Get the tips and tools you need to be a BIGG success. Branding Like a Black Belt

Today we were thrilled to visit with Jim Bouchard on The Bigg Success Show. Jim is a professional speaker, coach and the author of the great book, Dynamic Components of Personal Power. He has also been inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame and has become one of our personal friends. He s with us today to talk about how to Think Like a Black Belt! Let s get to the conversation ___ ___ ___ Welcome back to The Bigg Success Show, Jim! We re bigg fans of yours! ___ ___ I love you guys! ___ ___ It s been awhile since we ve talked. We want to chat with you today about some of the things you ve been doing with your brand and get some tips on how to think like a black belt. ___ ___ One of the things about thinking like a black belt is that sometimes you have to be ready to change in the ring. You have to change according to what your opponents are throwing at you. We started to realize that, while Dynamic Components of Personal Power is certainly an important statement, it was difficult to explain to people or it required an explanation. People would say, What is that? Actually I have to tell you that this was a high level marketing and branding meeting. There were three of us sitting around. My wife, Alex, said, You know what you really do. You just teach people how to think like a black belt. Why don t you just start saying that? ___ ___ She s a smart cookie! ___ ___ Yes, she is! That is what I do teach people to think like a black belt. Dynamic Components is certainly a part of that, but there are some other characteristics of the black belt mindset as well. So the rebranding worked. It took off. When you have a brand that s in synergy with your message and it has a strong sense of symbolism, people get it. A powerful brand is simple enough so people get it without having to think too much. Think Like a Black Belt is really taking off. People understand it from CEOs to general audiences. Most people say that they want to think like a black belt. ___ ___ It s very sexy. Maybe I can t physically be a black belt, but you can teach me how to think like a black belt. Now that s something I can do. ___ ___ I thought you were going somewhere else there. Because it is sexy. I m sexy! ___ ___ Are you too sexy for that shirt, Jim? ___ ___ He s too sexy for his black belt! ___ ___ You re right, though. That s a good word for it. Your brand has to appeal to people. We can overcomplicate it sometimes, can t we? ___ ___ Yes we can. That s why I think this is a good thing to talk about with you. So many people are building their own brands now. I think it s important that we don t over-complicate our branding and get in the way of the message. ___ ___ Exactly. And well-intended, but trying to brand yourself, or brand a business or title a book, it s like naming a band. It s hard. Part of the process is to just get out there and test it. Don t be afraid to try something. And don t be afraid to change. You have to have some flexibility. ___ ___ Get the tips and tools you need to be a BIGG success. Subscribe to the Bigg Success Weekly it s FREE! ___ ___ We changed our tag line for Bigg Success several months ago. We were at a conference and Lorelle VanFossen, the wonderful woman behind the Lorelle on WordPress blog, was asking people what their tag lines were. Then she called people out if it didn t make sense or if it didn t tell you anything. We worked around the table and our tablemates said that the how-to, can-do place didn t tell them anything. So it made us realize that we needed to figure out how we let people know what we re trying to accomplish so they can get it just by coming to the site and seeing it. ___ ___ There it is. ___ ___ Too add to that, Jim Think Like a Black Belt has five words in it. Bigg Success is life on your own terms . That s five words as well. But the thing is they both convey a benefit. Think Like a Black Belt I instantly see a benefit of listening to what you have to say. That s also important as we re thinking about our brands and how we describe them. Make sure it s benefit-oriented. Make sure you re telling someone what they re going to get out of it. ___ ___ Oh, exactly. See, I always loved your brand Bigg Success . I was drawn to that right away. What do I want? I want bigg success! ___ ___ Well, by definition, Bigg Success has to be a bigg success. It s just a self-fulfilling prophecy! It keeps the pressure on us! ___ ___ No retreat, no surrender! ___ ___ Any other words of wisdom for people building their brands? ___ ___ I was talking with somebody yesterday. His name is Dr. B. He had some great insight. We were talking about how the Think Like a Black Belt brand had morphed and the Black Belt Mindset theme. He said, You know, that works because it s in perfect alignment with who you are and what your message is. That s really important. Whatever you re bringing out there, that public face has to be in line with your heart. ___ ___ It s work that s much too hard building a business, building a brand to not be something that you just love. ___ ___ Right, and you have no right to expect anyone else to respond to it. There s a big problem with branding, with advertising and with business in general. People say, Build it and they will come. No way! You have to build it. You have to maintain it. You have to cut the lawn, water the plants, and wash the windows. You ve got to do all that stuff. And you have to make sure that people know about it. You can t just expect people to come to you because you have something of quality. I don t have expectations for anybody; that s not my privilege. It s my responsibility to go out there and tell people what I m doing and make sure that the message gets out there. ___ ___ That s a great way of looking at it! ___ ___ There s that dirty word again, though. Responsibility. ___ ___ That s part of being a black belt, right? ___ ___ You ve got to take responsibility for your own success, that s it! ___ Next time, we ll continue our conversation with Jim. He ll tell us how to set goals like a black belt. Please join us! Until then, here s to your bigg success! Subscribe to The Bigg Success Show in iTunes. Subscribe to the Bigg Success feed. Is Passion Overrated?

One of the most awesome people we ve met since we started Bigg Success is Jim Bouchard. He s a black belt turned motivational speaker. He does a great job helping you get in touch with your personal power. Recently, Jim turned the table on us instead of us being the interviewers, we were the interviewees! But that doesn t mean we didn t take the opportunity to send a few questions Jim s way we love to hear his fantastic insight! So today we thought we d share some of the highlights with you. Let s check into the conversation as we talk with Jim about passion . . . There s a lot of rhetoric about getting into a business that expresses your passion. The business I ve been involved with for a long time is the martial arts business. Most martial artists will go into business start a school because it s our passion, but it s not always the best way to make money. I think that s a very important, and often overlooked, factor when entering an entrepreneurial life. Passion is necessary, but it s not the only ingredient that s necessary. . That s a great distinction. It s the old story I have a hobby I love that I turn into a business. Now I don t love my business or my hobby. Think about your hobbies, but also reflect on the elements of that hobby that you really enjoy. Teaching has been my hobby, because I had my businesses full-time. What I got out of it was the joy of helping people and seeing the light bulb come on. Bigg Success fulfills me in the same way. . That s what people really need to look at. When you open these doors, you find passions that you never knew existed. I didn t set out to get into the speaking business. I did always have the ambition to write a book at some point, but I never thought I d go out into the speaking world. Like you, George, I found it was just a natural extension of the teaching that I liked to do in my case within the martial arts world. . You re such a great presenter, Jim. How did that happen for you that you ended up getting into the speaking business? . That s a great question it actually came from some of my martial arts students. I was sharing the martial arts philosophies that helped me create an anchor and a sense of value and worth in my life. They found themselves applying these philosophies to their business and personal life. A few of them encouraged me over the years to take my message to a different audience not everybody wants to learn how to punch and kick, but everyone wants to learn how to develop their personal power, their capacity to act effectively. That s how it got started. Then one of my mentors told me that I was already presenting every day anyway I went on the floor and taught! So for me, it was a very natural transition. But I m going to mark it this way one of the greatest gifts that I learned from the martial arts was the idea of beginner s mind. The whole world is open as a learning experience for us and we should never stop to pat ourselves on the back too long. Perfection is not a destination it s a never ending process. So I m going through the same process as a speaker that I went through as a martial artist. I want to learn, I want to grow, and I want to be a better presenter every day. And I know you guys feel the same way! . Absolutely, Jim! The thing that strikes me from your story you said some of your students made a suggestion. With that one little suggestion, and you listening carefully and then processing it, you found this opportunity. That s something we all need to be aware of opportunity doesn t hit you like a train. In most cases, it s very subtle. But that s where you ll find that thing that you really want to do! Subscribe to The Bigg Success Show in iTunes. Subscribe to the Bigg Success feed. . The Secret to Action

Sharon Ayn joined us on the show today. She is the author of five books, including the newly released Create Your Own Reality: The Ancient Wisdom. Sharon has made many appearances on radio and television, including the nationally syndicated radio show, Minding Your Business, and an appearance on The Oprah Winfrey Show. . . What inspired you to write your latest book? . . I work with entrepreneurs and people who have been downsized, and I ve found one thing that s consistent. People know they could do better, work less, and make more money, but without someone stimulating their imagination, it s very difficult to go through a change. So the book is designed to help people realize that, no matter what s going on in their life, if they take one step or enroll one person at a time, they can change anything that isn t the way they wanted it. . When we talked before our interview, you said that this book goes beyond where The Secret took us. . . Exactly. I love the fact that The Secret brought consciousness to so many people about staying positive, but the one thing people missed is being in action. You have to be in action. It s not enough just to think about it. You have to take a proactive role in your life. . What do you think keeps people from taking action what is it that holds people back? . . Some people truly believe that they re not entitled. Some people think it s too much work to get what they want. Other people are too overwhelmed by what s first, so they just stay at what they re doing even if it s not what they want. . For someone who feels that, what would be the one thing you would tell them to work on right now? . . Make a list of all the things you want to change, but put it in the positive. I work with clients who want a better job. I get them to describe what it s like to work at the company, what their tasks are, what the people are like that they work with. And then backtrack how do we get to that point? So for anything that you want to change, what is the first step you can take to be in control? Because I think a lot of this is people feeling that they are out of control of their own lives. . That is awesome there s a lot of practical advice that people can use right away in this book. . . It s simple knowledge that most people don t apply to their own life, even though they might be aware of it. . . Oprah calls it the aha moment. What do you call it? . . It s the dawning of the day when, like in City Slickers, you get your do over . So don t think, my life is just surrounded by quagmire, all my friends are always complaining and leaning on me, my relationship isn t working we re fighting all the time, I hate my job, and all these things. Instead, think about every day being brand new. Every day, we get to reinvest ourselves. . Sharon s book comes with bonuses You get an incredible $4,661 in bonuses when you buy Sharon s wonderful book, including great material from: Annie Jennings, who helps people who want to be authors or speakers, and get interviewed on the radio. Dave Sheffield, who works with corporations, helping people take the first step to change what s happening in their career. We were pleased to visit with Jim Bouchard on The Bigg Success Show today. Jim is the author of Dynamic Components of Personal Power. Success the Black Belt Way. Jim turned his love for martial arts into a thriving martial arts business. From there he started his own publishing company and is now a successful author and speaker. Jim shared 3 tips to get from where you are to where you want to be: #1 The only person responsible for you is you. You don t need, and shouldn t depend on anybody to guarantee you anything. It s nice when they offer and it s nice to be helpful yourself. You become a much better resource to others and do more good in the world when you make yourself powerful. So get out there and do it! #2 Start with power. Martial arts is all about developing power (e.g. power for a kick or a punch). Those same techniques work in life and business as well. Power is your ability or capacity to act or perform effectively. So perfection isn t a destination; it s a never-ending process. The more you embrace that process, the more prepared you are to take advantage of opportunities. Of course, at times it s easy to fall into the trap of feeling powerless. There may be conditions and circumstances beyond your control. At some point, though, you have to put on the brakes and take personal responsibility. Then focus on improving your ability and capacity to be open to opportunities. #3 Gratitude. Jim says this could be first of the three in order of importance. He has a morning ritual that he practices no matter what s he s feeling that day. He doesn t focus on what he doesn t have; he spends a few moments expressing gratitude. Start your day being thankful for what you have. For example, Jim says it s wonderful for him to wake up every day and know that he s in business with his wife and that she s an extraordinary partner both personally and n business. No matter what adversities they face, they can face them together and succeed. That s a lot to be thankful for by itself! George said he really hoped Mary-Lynn paid attention to that! Download four chapters of Jim s great book, Dynamic Components of Personal Power. Success the Black Belt Way. It s FREE! Click Here. Our bigg quote today comes from Jim Bouchard himself: You only stand on the mountain top for a moment. It s the journey that provides all the best memories. So even when the going gets tough, enjoy every moment of your climb to the top. We thank Jim for sharing his time and wisdom with us! Next time, we ll look at how one young man made a bigg difference at work by adding his personal touch. Until then, here s to your bigg success!
