My good friend Uli Loskot is a freelance photojournalist and she travels all over the world. Currently she is in Mexico mountain biking. She recently sent me these pictures from a camping trip that we took last summer at Donnell Pond. While Uli travels the world, I prefer to travel around in my head. This summer Kent and I have spent almost every weekend at the lake swimming and reading. Below is a description of some books about consciousness that have inspired this vlog post. Industrial societies have an abundance of educated people, technology and resources, and yet the world faces some pretty complex problems like world hunger, global warming, nuclear proliferation and public health crises. Do these have something to do with the way we perceive and think about ourselves and our ability to work collaboratively with one another? How much does our own individual consciousness influence the world in which we co-exist? These books by authors in the field of Consciousness Studies offer interesting theories investigating these questions. Could a collective shift in consciousness be the missing link necessary to prevent the self-destruction of humanity? In Coming to Our Senses: Healing Ourselves and the World through Mindfulness Jon Kabat-Zinn explains how mindfulness practice allows us to become more aware and compassionate individuals. In his novel Boomeritis and The Theory of Everything, Ken Wilber synthesizes theories of human development and the evolution of consciousness. Some of the theories based on Spiral Dynamics describe how humans evolve from an egocentric to ethnocentric to worldcentric awareness. Finally, in The Four Agreements Don Miguel Ruiz suggests methods for finding and living your authentic path. This video features a number of quotes from Ruiz. "You can never solve a problem on the level on which it was created." -- Albert Einstein.Music: "Dub Philosophy (Mad _ghost mix)" by _ghost via ccmixter.orgPhotos: Uli Loskot, calilily, laughingsquid, midweekpost, James Duncan Davidson (O'Reilly Media), Apollo 17 via jamesxv7
