Or, don’t skin the bear before it’s been shot. That seems to be exactly what Jay Reatard’s old band members tried to do when they walked out on him in October. (But then again, that’s punk music, right?) Inconvenient timing (due to them being on tour at the time) seems to be the only downside from this situation as Danish band Cola Freaks are now officially on board the lo-fi garage punk project and have been trucking through Europe with him since. This seems to be a win-win situation, as he is finally visiting Columbus again (Sunday night at the Summit), now with a kick-ass European punch and seemingly quite happy about the new additions. He spent 10 days in October recording in the Freaks’ hometown of Aarhus and has gone on the record about it, saying, “It sounds exactly the way I wanted these songs to sound like live when I wrote them.” (Cue proverbial twisting of knife.) It’s a good time to be Danish, as Jay and the band will also be opening for The Pixies on their Doolittle tour that kicks off this weekend in Chicago. Oh, and now Reatard s former rhythm section is apparently joining up with Wavves. Reatard video and info on the Columbus openers after the jump. The Black Hollies and Bryan Scary and the Shredding Tears will also be on the bill. The Black Hollies are touring on Softly Towards the Light, which was released last month. They tap more into the psychedelic spirit of garage, combining smart guitar leads, a prominent organ and bold cymbal usage. (They kinda give me the impulse to put on some polyester, dust off the lava lamp and dance around my living room.) Bryan Scary is quite the talented pop musician, having played every instrument aside from the drums on his record, Mad Valentines. The vibe is extremely energetic, fast-paced and glamorous in a “we live in a mystic land called Scaryville” kind of way. (Not a fabrication on my part.) Listen, be amused. Every month, we dedicate a week of our podcast to highlighting some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing soon in the San Francisco Bay Area. We ve got ten great bands playing some excellent shows this month, so head out and see some live music! The Raveonettes ( Come On Santa ) kick off our show with a track from their latest EP, Wishing You A Rave Christmas. On Friday, January 23rd, the band will be at Bimbo s with The Soft Pack. John Vanderslice ( Pale Horse ) (Feature Podcast) will be accompanied by the Magik*Magik Orchestra for a very special performance to celebrate Tiny Telephone s ten year anniversary. The show is at Great American Music Hall on Friday, January 30th. Aesop Rock DJs before and after the set. Department of Eagles ( No One Does It Like You ) head out on a bicoastal tour this month to support their second album In Ear Park. The band has two shows at Cafe Du Nord on Sunday, January 25th. Supporting acts have yet to be announced. Word is that San Francisco s The Invisible Cities ( Instaglo ) (Feature Podcast) will celebrate the release of their long-awaited sophomore album later this month. They ll be on a great all-local indie pop bill at the Rickshaw Stop on January 29th. Also performing are Love Is Chemicals (Feature Podcast) and The Matinees. San Francisco s Magic Bullets ( Yesterday s Seen Better Days [Live] ) (Feature Podcast) have a new 12 titled Lives for Romance out later this month. You can see them at Bottom of the Hill on Friday, January 9th. The Passionistas (Feature Podcast) and Airfix Kits (featuring members of Giant Haystacks) are also on the bill. With a new album titled Nature s Got Away released last September on K Records, Karl Blau ( Mockingbird Diet ) heads down to the Bay for a few shows later this month. On January 28th, he ll be at the Rickshaw Stop with Painted Cakes, Zoyres, and DJ Odd Nosdam. San Francisco s Finest Dearest ( Your Hometown ) (Feature Podcast) celebrate the release of The Wedding EP, a split release with Empty Rooms (Feature Podcast), by joining that band for a show at the Make-Out Room on Saturday, January 31st. Jay Reatard ( An Ugly Death ) has been releasing a torrent of strong singles on Matador Records over the past few years. He ll perform with fellow lo-fi rocker Nobunny at The Independent on Sunday, January 25th. The Action Design ( Half A World ) are playing a special benefit show at the Phoenix Theater on Saturday, January 17th. Members of the band will be teaming with members of Nothington to play as a reunited Tsunami Bomb. The New Trust (Feature Podcast) also perform. LA s Anavan s ( Traumatology ) newest album Cover Story takes electro-pop and post-punk and scrambles them into something catchy and unsettling.
