Have Money Will Vlog :: Project Pedal :: Michael Ambs
from Vlog of a Faux Journalist June 07, 2007
As the vlog class of 2004 becomes more immersed in the videoblogging field, space is left for later classes to step up. When Ryanne Hodson's busy-ness gap occurred in the midst of advocating Michael Ambs' Project Pedal, I stepped up with Road Node 101-inspired glee. Project Pedal is the essential 2nd millennial road trip. Human powered in every way, starting June 2, 2007, Ambs will follow and document the two-wheeled road trip magic of subjects Larry and Jay as they undertake a cross-country bicycle journey. Michael arrived at Have Money Will Vlog having lost support from a classic documentary film organization. It seemed to me he came to us despairing of accomplishing his dream film in the way he'd dreamed it. The production issues Michael and I spoke about were geared toward helping him embrace the one-human-band videoblogging makes possible. Michael is at heart a classic film maker, so it is fitting for him to have won the $25,000 first prize in Network2.tv's promo contest that now supports his efforts. With this award, Ambs will be able to make the documentary vlog / film he imagined. My points here are to encourage the less-tangible promotional support of our estimable community, to wish Ambs and his team well, and to say to others out there who may despair of making the documentaries or feature-length vlogs of their own dreams, that one does not have to have $25K or $10K or $5K to accomplish this. One may make a feature-length film in vlog bits and pieces with a cell phone or video-capable digital still camera. And that's the space where and why HMWV lives. Bon Voyage to Michael Ambs and Project Pedal. We'll be watching and cheering you on every turn of the way. Road Node 101::Techniques for Road Warriors
from Vlog of a Faux Journalist August 29, 2006
Road Node hit Deadwood, SD, just in time for the Sturgis Rally that roared down the road a'piece, and an evening's worth of vloggersation with Scott Prentice, the godfather of South Dakota vlogging. A bit about road technique. Huge road challenge: keeping tools handy. Solution: the tool belt with cellphonecamera (Nokia 6682) and iPod/Griffin iTalk mic/speaker in tow. Camera optional but always nearby. The advance recording of sound effects / sound tracks independent of footage - used to shape the footage sometimes, holds. Record a bunch of sound tracks before rolling a single foot, apart from arrivals. Arrivals are nearly always captured. Four days without access to electricity at the Grotto was challenging and even today, cellphone footage from the way-off-the-grid action awaits attention. Have finally bluetoothed the things to the mac, which is full-to-the-brim with footage and sound tracks. Once in situ, I tend to try to reduce the actual amount of time spent filming to a bare minimum. Lifepractice tells me that being in the moment builds knowledge knowledge the whole works folds up to a 2" x 6" x 8" package. So, that's the tech report from Road Node 101, folks. The Elevator
from - blip.tv (beta) May 06, 2006
I really really love the old elevator that services my studio and opens between my space and my neighbor's space. Tied together with string and duct tape, it gives me a thrill.Uploading to Blip seems to degrade the sound quality a bit. Hmmm.

Vlog of a Faux Journalist: USPS Garfield NJ
from Vlog of a Faux Journalist June 29, 2005
Click the image to see the very quaint Garfield Post Office & meet Barbara, who's developed an instinct for spotting suspect packages. There was a time in my early writing career when going to the post office meant sending submissions to poetry magazines. The anticipation, excitement, & fear were all part of the experience. When the plexiglass & cameras appeared, visiting the USPS lost its charm. Thankfully I no longer have to hawk my works over the transom and my neighborhood PO harkens back to the days when not everyone was treated as a potential criminal. Thank goodness. The music is military code for "mail call".

Faux Press Vlog: Practice, practice, practice
from Vlog of a Faux Journalist June 19, 2005
Our community debates content and audience. Based on response I should be producing cooking and singing videoblogs. Perhaps I should be the world's first singing chef. Hmmm. Why not? Probably because I dislike cooking, which is why I made cooking videos in the first place, to learn to love it again. Have covered this Liz Phair song since it was released on her album "Whip Smart" in 1996. Every song in the repertoire is there because it reminds me to remember something or other; this song, to remember that practice doesn't always make perfect. Click the image to watch the movie, yo.

Faux Press Vlog: Music Video
from Vlog of a Faux Journalist May 26, 2005
"Four-Minute Ballet for Faux Press, Celebrities and Disposable Cameras" is the official title of this 2000 piece that features the music of Ahmed El-Motassem's Legal Fiction. The tune's called "I Want to Be You". Found the song after we did the film but it fit so perfectly that I couldn't not make a music video of the work. We played with the ideas of celebrity and media. STARRING members of the faux press corps: Steve Bennett, poet/engineer Andrzej Bialuski, designer/photographer/entrepreneur Adam Merton Cooper, cartographer/poet Paul Forsman, former Marlboro Man/fashion photographer Melanie Junceau, publicist Richard Kostelanetz, philosopher/poet Elizabeth, incognito Kevin McCutcheon, conductor Jan McLaughlin, as princess-at-large Lauren Moore, star Sharon O'Connell, ballerina Eran Palatnik, cinematographer/entrepreneur Cosmic Ray, shaman Judith Ross, as J.K. Onassis Rie Yamaguchi, artist Ahmed El-Motassem's Legal Fiction, music The Plaza Hotel, as itself ____________________________________ Thanks to Eric Rice for the urge to repost. music video week

Eliot, one of my favorite poems. Hear the full reading HERE. cooking

Faux Press Vlog: Elmwood Park, NJ
from Vlog of a Faux Journalist May 21, 2005
Click the image to play. Met Tony Perrelly & son when the Puerto Rican diaspora from Williamsburg Brooklyn caused all my vintage car buddies to leave, along with their knowledge, rum, and tools. Tony helped me continue to learn enough about the internal combustion engine to be dangerous.
