The 10 Most Enticing Sundance 2010 Short Films

The 10 Most Enticing Sundance 2010 Short Films

from Cinematical on December 07, 2009
Duration: 0
The 2010 Sundance Film Festival has just announced its slate of short films, broken up into several sections (U.S. Dramatic, Documentary, Animated, International Dramatic, Documentary, Animated and New Frontier). Unlike previous years where one narrative film opened the festival, Sundance will be switching it up in 2010 and premiering one shorts program, one documentary and one narrative film all on the same night, Thursday, January 21. Said shorts program will feature shorts from Spike Jonze (I'm Here), Rory Kennedy (The Fence), Patrik Eklund (Seeds of the Fall) and Fran ois Alaux and Herv de Cr cy (Logorama). Most notable among this year's batch of shorts is that Spike Jonze and James Franco both have films screening. Jonze's short, titled I'm Here, is a robot love story starring Andrew Garfield, whereas Franco's -- titled Herbert White -- stars Michael Shannon and is based on the poem of the same name. But aside from the celebrity short filmmakers, I've highlighted 10 shorts that sound pretty damn enticing. Check them out below, and the full list after the jump. TUB (Director and screenwriter: Bobby Miller) -- It's just your typical story about a guy who can't commit to his girlfriend...who then jerks off in the shower...and accidentally impregnates his tub. Logorama / France (Directors and screenwriters: Fran ois Alaux, Herv de Cr cy and Ludovic Houplain) -- Spectacular car chases, an intense hostage crisis, and wild animals rampaging through the city, change a world constructed by heavy corporate sponsorship. My Mom Smokes Weed (Director and screenwriter: Clay Liford) -- After a loyal son comes home to visit his aging mother, she assigns him some chores -- one of which involves a road trip to help satiate her desire for a certain special herb. NEW MEDIA (Director and screenwriter: J.J. Adler) -- Living in the lap of luxury through no achievement of his own, an out of touch, middle-aged poseur tries to make good by getting in on the 'viral video' craze.Filed under: Sundance, Shorts, NewsstandContinue reading The 10 Most Enticing Sundance 2010 Short Films Permalink | Email this | Comments

Finally! A Peek at James Franco's Allen Ginsberg

Finally! A Peek at James Franco's Allen Ginsberg

from Cinematical on December 03, 2009
Duration: 0
As we learned yesterday, Sundance has revealed the first chunk of its lineup, which included Rob Epstein and Jeffrey Friedman's Howl. In other words, the film that has James Franco starring as Allen Ginsberg -- when the iconic poet faced an obscenity trial for his poem "Howl." The above picture is one of the first images of the film, released by the Sundance Film Festival, showing Ginsberg and lifelong partner Peter Orlovsky (Aaron Tveit). (Here's a picture for reference.) Pretty darned good, eh? But wait. It's easy to think OMG Perfect! and rush over there with high expectations. Unfortunately, the above image is definitely the best of the bunch, with the others (see below gallery) looking like Franco in glasses (plus one more image of Jon Hamm in his best court duds). That makes me half excited and half disappointed, but it will all come down to how it works in moving, talking action, and whether Franco can make the poet come to life with inflection and mannerisms. There's still a chance, and it's hard to gripe about the rare wordy projects that make it to the big screen. What do you think of Franco's Howl look? Donald Faison, Dave Franco, SCRUBS stars: Mr. Media Radio Interview

Donald Faison, Dave Franco, SCRUBS stars: Mr. Media Radio Interview

from Mr. Media Radio on December 01, 2009

Image via Wikipedia By BOB ANDELMAN Picture this: I’m looking up to my left in a thoughtful pose, my right index finger gently tapping against my lower lip. Outwardly, I’m introducing my guests, “Scrubs” TV stars Donald Faison—a.k.a., Turk—and Dave Franco. Inwardly, I’m daydreaming, trying to imagine what their co-star, Zach Braff would be thinking about if he were me. How would Braff—who plays “J.D.” on the show—introduce his extremely close friend Faison in a way that would both warm your heart and reveal something unintentionally embarrassing about their relationship? AUDIO EXCERPT: "(J.D. and Turk) are still crazy! They're just considered adults now. You remember how it was when you were all of a sudden considered an adult and you had all the responsibility in the world. But you felt you were as young as the people who look up to you or you were mentoring? That's how Turk and J.D. feel." And what would he say about Franco, about whom I know little going into this interview except that a similarly named actor James Franco is currently appearing on an ABC soap opera? That, too, must be my imagination. The daydream just went poof—I slipped in a puddle deliberately left on the floor next to my desk by The Janitor. Damn you, Janitor!!!! James Franco's on 'General Hospital' Because of a New Film?

James Franco's on 'General Hospital' Because of a New Film?

from Cinematical on November 12, 2009
Duration: 0
Remember how James Franco shocked everyone last month with news that he was going to spend a number of weeks on the ABC soap opera General Hospital? Well, it seems to be a little more than just a random urge. Movieline had their suspicions about Franco's reasoning and spoke to Carter, who has collaborated with the actor on a number of projects from photo shoots to idiosyncratic filmmaking. According to Carter: "It was an idea that I posted to him, and it's tied to another film that he and I are working on now." It's a "feature film that's gonna be pretty abstract, for a larger audience," and when asked about whether he's had input on Franco's involvement with the show: "Well, that's actually stuff that's really unfolding now, because we're shooting it. Hmm, what can I say? Again, it's a fine line between a job that James is doing at General Hospital that's a very serious thing..." "General Hospital -- or a soap opera in general -- is part of the film we're working on, but it's not a giant part of the narrative. It's not going to affect the way the film turns out to be." Beyond grabbing a handful of elusively vague answers about what this upcoming film will be, the interview delves into their artistic relationship and past collaborations. So there you have it -- this was all for a film project that's not quite discernible at the present time. For now, hit the jump and check out a sneak preview of Franco's soap opera action. ...And yet another terrible use of Gary Jules' Mad World.Filed under: Casting, Home EntertainmentContinue reading James Franco's on 'General Hospital' Because of a New Film? Tina Fey and Steve Carell's 'Date Night' Has a Trailer

Tina Fey and Steve Carell's 'Date Night' Has a Trailer

from Cinematical on November 11, 2009
Duration: 0
Sometimes there's a down side to being considered a comedic genius. Right now in the world of TV comedy, Tina Fey and Steve Carell are the 'Prom Queen and King', and with all that popularity comes the price of raised expectations. The couples comedy Date Night, starring Fey and Carell as a married couple looking to spice up their romance, was bound to be scrutinized. So now that the first trailer has arrived (via Apple), reactions have been mixed. But I think there's hope for this film, if for no other reason than the fact that Fey and Carell are some of the most talented comedians working right now (although I'm still holding out for Fey to start writing some more movies of her own). Date Night was directed by Shawn Levy (of Night at The Museum fame) and written by Josh Klausner, who only has a couple of credits as a writer (mainly for Shrek films). But Klausner has also worked with the Farrelly brothers, so he must know his way around a joke, right? I guess that's why I'm willing to give Date Night the benefit of the doubt, because on paper, all the elements are there for a good comedy -- the least of which is a strong supporting cast of funny folks like James Franco, Mila Kunis, Jason Segel, and Kristen Wiig. Maybe I'm grasping at straws, but the film has also yet to be rated, so there's always a chance the funnier bits weren't 'ready for prime time'. So watch the trailer and tell me what you think. Am I just kidding myself, or is there a chance that Date Night will surprise us all and turn out to be a pretty funny flick?
