An award-winning performance from Bollywood star Kareena Kapoor highlights this subtly restrained, beautifully lensed film about two characters from opposite ends of Mumbai's social spectrum stuck together under shelter on a stormy night. Kapoor plays the brash prostitute Chameli opposite the charismatic Rahul Bose as Aman, a yuppie bank executive harboring guilt and grief over the loss of his wife. As the night passes, social barriers drop away and Aman shares a glimpse of Chameli's troubled world. The prostitute and banker drop their identities and come to forge a closer, human bond. On Digital Media, Episode #42

On Digital Media, Episode #42

from On Digital Media on July 19, 2007
Duration: 3102
In this episode John Federico,??Chia-Lin Simmons, Ken Gellman and Steve Hatch discuss: Free movies from Jaman.com! The first 500 people to text the keyword ODM (without quotes) to 95495 to will receive 4 free video rentals from Jaman.com. (You can thank Chia-Lin for the hook-up.) Thanks to Mobivity for providing the SMS capabilities. (Mobivity is a self-service platform that gives you the ability to create and run your own text message marketing campaigns.) 81 million in the U.S. are watching broadband video according to Nielsen. We think this is the dominant story/theme for digital media in 2007. We think that Google s acquisition of YouTube spurred the online video craze 10 million video streams of the Live Earth concerts were delivered in the week following the event, surpassing the number of people who viewed it on television. This is primarily due to the fact that the 22-hour event was carried only on the Universal HD channel with only about 3 hours of performances on NBC. 30 million homes have at least 1 HDTV. That number is expected to increase to 52 million homes at the end of 2008. (That s a lot of trips to Best Buy ) VEOH has released an application that aggregates (streamscrapes) video streams from around the web and presents them in a TiVo-like interface on your computer. We love it. So does Verizon as they ll be making it available to FiOS subscribers and VCAST subscribers. Mobile video complexities are holding back growth according to recent research by InStat. The European Commission has selected DVB-H, a Nokia-backed standard, for mobile TV. Revver has introduced a new addition to its advertising model: pre and post-roll video advertising, paying the producer based on the number of views (in addition to their cost-per-click advertising model). Google is creating AdSense for Games Google expands it s Google Print advertising program to include AdWords advertisers. The FTC is taking a close look at Google s acquisition of??DoubleClick. And so is Scott Cleland. (Who!?) Cleland is worried about what he calls The Google-opoly. Jeff Pulver says goodbye to LinkedIn and hello to FaceBook. In general we agree, but we just can t leave LinkedIn behind. Lots of people never even bothered with LinkedIn. If you add Doug Haslam as a friend on FaceBook, be careful: he may indicate that you hooked up. We get deep into a discussion of the value of FaceBook vs. LinkedIn Our wine this week was a 2004 Altos De Luzon Jumilla (from the Wine Library, of course). On Digital Media, Episode #34

On Digital Media, Episode #34

from On Digital Media on May 10, 2007
Duration: 0
In this episode John Federico, Chia-Lin Simmons and Steve Hatch ponder: The viewers: where have they all gone? They re definitely not watching network television. We think they re programming their own media diets when they want, how they want, where they want. Want an invitation to Joost? Send us email to comments AT odmcast DOT com. (Thanks to listener Jos Moreno for the original Joost invitation that started it all.) Chia-Lin has discovered Jaman.com and is in love with it. She may leave her husband to go work for Jaman in San Mateo, California. Are you listening, Gaurav Dhillon and Carlos Montalvo? John and his wife have occassionally watched DVD s in bed, using her 15 Powerbook. Jaman could be the next thing they start watching in that way. Steve thinks that s impractical for most people. He prefers Slingbox and its ilk. The demise of the traditional media in the digital age is overblown according Dick Parsons, CEO of Time Warner, one of the largest traditional media companies in the world. Dick needs to choose better analogies for his public speaking engagements. John is now reading real paper books on the train to work! (Go figure.) Steve still prefers to listen to podcasts on the train. Chia-Lin geeks out, reading books on her Treo 700P. Steve s looking for a good podcatcher for Windows Mobile. Anyone care to make a recommendation? Prime Time is any time for today s media consumer. Cox Cable has disable ad skipping on ABC and ESPN content delivered as Video-On-Demand. Fix that! Peter Chernin, President of NewsCorp, thinks that the big will get bigger thanks to consolidation. Traditional media will join with digital media to make for even larger media entities. We say, Duh. Welcome to the party. Odeo was sold to SonicMountain for a little more than a million dollars. NewsCorp and NBC have signed CNET video properties to its YouTube Killer video service Yahoo is closing Yahoo Auctions. And Yahoo Photos. And who knows what s next. Apparently, a good number of people from the Yahoo Mobile team have left for mobile and wireless startups. What is Yahoo s Core anyway? Correction from last week s show: YouTube s new advertising program will compensate its top contributors/producers Our wine this week was a Bogle Merlot and a 2004 Cycles Gladiator Pinot Noir. (We loved the Pinot.) Our closing music is Democracy from Alexander Blu. Send us email to comments AT odmcast DOT com or call our comment line and leave a message: 775-860-2263.
