Crobar Club

Crobar Club

from recent posts tagged tisch - blip.tv (beta) on January 21, 2007
Duration: 45
Just a quick slam edit if a free night at the big New York City club Crobar. Check out the bartenders throwing napkins into the crowd that are then swept up by cleaners. Very bizarre. Very comphy private lounges on the edges. Good dancing. Earplugs a must.

Advice on Getting Old

Advice on Getting Old

from recent posts tagged tisch - blip.tv (beta) on January 16, 2007
Duration: 627
Contains perhaps the wisest words I've recently heard. At the end, my aunt Cathy who is mildly devevlopmentally retarded, answers my poorly phrased question, "Any other advice for people who are going to get old?" Cathy says, ""Be happy," and then she pauses for a momnet and adds, "with yourself!" and laughs. So true. Depression and such seems to stem from first and foremost being hard on one's self. This is a report from the woods of NH on a classic victorian hill top, amid quiet trees and maintained fields with my Uncle, Aunt and Grandma. They all are disabled in one way or another and have banded together to take care of each other, so they don't have to be in resting homes for as long as possible. My grandma is 95 and deaf. My aunt is 57 and retarded. My uncle has been in a wheelchair since he was 17 and is now 63. Grandma had the house and some money and was frugal and invested it wisely for 70 years. It adds up instead of disappearing, if you're smart. She taught me early to spend cash on tools of the trade, education (I might have taken this a little too far...) and real estate. Oh, and travel and shoes. Which strangely enough is backed by the Jewish immigrant side of my family. They're both right. Don't buy cheap shoes. Or if you do, get lots! But back to the triangle of care I'm around. Really it's four people lately since my Dad is staying here about half the week and doing the heavy lifting and outside stuff. Aunt Cathy cleans, bakes, knits with grandma and takes her to the bathroom and bed. Uncle keeps the books, runs the house, meditates and composes music. He cooks three good meals a day, makes the drinks at 5:45pm (one jigger of Stolie each, with three ice cubes and a splash of water. No seconds), and gets the movies on Netflicks. They still have to have a woman come five nights a week and sleep with Rhoda and make her exercise a little. It's a strange situation, but a lovely one while it lasts. A moral this new year for me, being around them, is to stick together and support each other. Keep those addresses of good friends as we move about in life. Try and live close by to them and family. Don't be afraid to ask for help. Also, save some money for retirement. A lot of smart money, if you want to have control. Or, as Aunt Cathy says, if she outlives everyone and is a alone, she's going to live in the middle of a nice town and walk everywhere and make friends she can laugh with. The other idea that's been filtering up for me is that there are few rules about how to live a life. What matters is what works for you and doesn't hurt others. Happy new year. Happy ENTIRE year.

Times Square Protest, Jan. 11th 2007

Times Square Protest, Jan. 11th 2007

from recent posts tagged tisch - blip.tv (beta) on January 12, 2007
Duration: 113
What a bizarre little protest. Lit by the off-worldly intense giant screens of Times Square, a small anti-war protest formed, in of all places, in front of the military recruiting center. I got their early, early enough to see an older gentleman with a police badge on his long black coat scmoozing with what looked like protest organizers. He seemed to know them all and I sensed mutual respect of all things. Clearly this was the boss on the cop, and plain clothes detective, side. There was a small place made on the opposite side of the protest for the un-protesters for the iraq ware and Bush. Was my picture taken for being there? I searched the windows but couldn't find any cameras. Of course if I could, that would be sad. It was over in a hour. There were buttons for sale.

My Hippies

My Hippies

from recent posts tagged tisch - blip.tv (beta) on July 26, 2006
Duration: 0
The hippies grew up during WWII and the Cold War. As young adults they experienced the Korean war, the civil rights fight and Vietnam. Their America was war torn, conservative and in a lot of ways, rife with fear. Then in the late 1960s thousands of them spontaneously dropped out of that America and somehow found each other in places like San Francisco. Fear became fun, nuclear mushroom clouds became mushroom trips, work became welfare, and repression became revolution. But by the mid-1970s the energy was fading and they started to drop back in. Or did they? Who were the hippies? Was it all peace and love? Did their ideology survive? What was it like on Haight Street in 1969? Or on a commune deep in the redwoods? Did they change anything? Did they learn anything?NOTE ON EXPLICITY MATERIAL: there are a few brief stills of non-sexual, documentary style, frontal nudity of hippies My Hippies explores the hippie revolution from the personal perspective of a hippie kid whose mother, step father, aunt and uncle all met on San Francisco's Haight Street in 1969. Still close friends and living in the same town, they share their experiences, pictures, 8mm films, unreleased psychedelic rock music, and thoughts about their wild trip as they face retirement and old age.
