Built in 1921 Savage Rapids Dam on the Rogue River gave local farmers irrigation water for years. But the Dam's deterioration over the years and its damage to fish populations caused rethinking of the Dam's usefullness. A new irrigation pumping plant has been built and the Dam has been removed to free the natural flow of the Rogue River and encourage fish spawning to once again flourish.

In some areas, farmers are using freshwater resources - including groundwater - at an alarming rate. The GRACE satellites enable scientists to discover changes to underground aquifers by monitoring changes in the Earth's gravity. In northern India, farmers rely heavily on irrigation to grow crops, and the resulting massive aquifer depletion creates an uncertain future for the region.
