July 09, 2008

Professor Dan Ariely visits Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss his book "Predictably Irrational: The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions." This event took place on July 1, 2008, as part of the Authors@Google series. In a series of illuminating, often surprising experiments, MIT behavioral economist Dan Ariely refutes the common assumption that we behave in fundamentally rational ways. Blending everyday experience with groundbreaking research, Ariely explains how expectations, emotions, social norms, and other invisible, seemingly illogical forces skew our reasoning abilities. Not only do we make astonishingly simple mistakes every day, but we make the same types of mistakes, Ariely discovers. We consistently overpay, underestimate, and procrastinate. We fail to understand the profound effects of our emotions on what we want, and we overvalue what we already own. Yet these misguided behaviors are neither random nor senseless. They're systematic and predictable—making us predictably irrational. Dan Ariely is the Alfred P. Sloan Professor of Behavioral Economics at MIT, where he holds a joint appointment between MIT's Media Laboratory and the Sloan School of Management. He is also a researcher at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston and a visiting professor at Duke University. Ariely wrote this book while he was a fellow at the Institute for Advance Study at Princeton. June 17, 2008

Ori Brafman and his brother Rom Brafman visit Google's Mountain View, CA headquarters to discuss Ori's book "Sway: The Irresistible Pull of Irrational Behavior." This event took place on June 13, 2008, as part of the Authors@Google series. Why is it so difficult to sell a plummeting stock or end a doomed relationship? Why do we listen to advice just because it came from someone "important"? Why are we more likely to fall in love when there's danger involved? In Sway, renowned organizational thinker Ori Brafman and his brother, psychologist Rom Brafman, answer all these questions and more. Drawing on cutting-edge research from the fields of social psychology, behavioral economics, and organizational behavior, Sway reveals dynamic forces that influence every aspect of our personal and business lives, including loss aversion (our tendency to go to great lengths to avoid perceived losses), the diagnosis bias (our inability to reevaluate our initial diagnosis of a person or situation), and the "chameleon effect" (our tendency to take on characteristics that have been arbitrarily assigned to us). Ori Brafman is coauthor of The Starfish and the Spider and is a renowned organizational expert who regularly speaks before Fortune 500, governmental, and military audiences. A graduate of Stanford Business School, he lives in San Francisco. Century Of Self - Part One Happiness Machines The story of the relationship between Sigmund Freud and his American nephew, Edward Bernays. Bernays invented the public relations profession in the 1920s and was the first person to take Freud's ideas to manipulate the masses. He showed American corporations how they could make people want things they didn't need by systematically linking mass-produced goods to their unconscious desires. Bernays was one of the main architects of the modern techniques of mass-consumer persuasion, using every trick in the book, from celebrity endorsement and outrageous PR stunts, to eroticising the motorcar. His most notorious coup was breaking the taboo on women smoking by persuading them that cigarettes were a symbol of independence and freedom. But Bernays was convinced that this was more than just a way of selling consumer goods. It was a new political idea of how to control the masses. By satisfying the inner irrational desires that his uncle had identified, people could be made happy and thus docile. It was the start of the all-consuming self which has come to dominate today's world. http://truth-tv.org are you informed Author: 911truthnc Keywords: You CAN Handle The Truth Edward Bernays Sigmund Freud psychoanalysts focus groups irrational mind model consumer Added: May 4, 2008

January 24, 2008

POWER, POLITICS, AND RACIAL IDENTIFICATION: No one likes a turn-coat -- just ask Benedict Arnold. But when it comes to race, accusations of betrayal can be particularly offensive. As the country focuses its attention on South Carolina, and debates the role race may (or may not) play in the Democratic primary, Kojo speaks with legal historian Randall Kennedy about the unique stigma that attaches when one is labeled a racial sell-out. (23 min.) EXPLAINING THE IRRATIONAL WORLD: Is it illogical to do drugs or have unprotected sex? Some would say yes. But according to Tim Harford, sound logical reasons explain why some people live a life full of risky behavior. The Undercover Economist joins us to explore hidden incentives behind seemingly illogical behavior. (26 min.)
