Rachel Pearl: Baby Blue

Rachel Pearl: Baby Blue

from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog on November 20, 2009
Duration: 0
Today s Daily Dose is a honey-dipped soulful number from bright young Nashville jazz-ling Rachel Pearl. From her forthcoming album Love Extravagantly, this is Baby Blue . Rachel Pearl’s voice is mesmerizing, transporting; her fashions are elegant, eccentric; and her mix of musical styles never fails to take her audience to places they don’t expect to go… A tousle of red atop shapely dress, she takes the old, mixes it with the new and constantly tests the boundaries of where music should go. Pearl has a way of turning every vocal performance into a lesson in chemistry between an audience and a true artist. From their recent album Signal Morning, this is Athens, GA s Circulatory System with Round Again . After the split of the Olivia Tremor Control, songwriter W. Cullen Hart s first step was to create the Circulatory System. Featuring members of the former Olivias and other notable Elephant 6 luminaries, the Circulatory System s self titled first album is an exploration of the larger and the smaller, the here and the far away, and the now and the forever. Seven and a half years in the making, culled from hours of recorded material sculpted in at least seven different studios, the new Circulatory System album is an absolutely stellar document of song and sound. The Minor Leagues: Good Boys

The Minor Leagues: Good Boys

from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog on November 13, 2009

Today s infectiously cheery Daily Dose comes to you from Cincinnati, OH group The Minor Leagues. Good Boys is taken from their new album This Story Is Old, I Know, But It Goes On , released earlier this week. [Warning: Contains one instance of NSFW lyrics!] Ben Walpole wishes he were British, fronting Pulp in 1995. Patrick Helmes wishes he were playing lead for Megadeth in 1988. But cruel fate has instead placed them both in the Minor Leagues, playing insidiously catchy indiepop for most of the last decade from their Cincinnati, Ohio homebase. The Leagues fifth album arrives on Datawaslost this fall, a kitchen-sink rock opera called This Story Is Old, I Know, But It Goes On.. Equal parts Pet Sounds and Dexy s Midnight Runners, the new record jumps and shimmies with the energy of its home-recorded roots 90s Brit-pop rubs elbows with 60s soul and even a touch of 70s glam-rock, all held together by clever hooks and vibrant production. It s this melange of orchestral pop sounds that s earned their previous albums comparisons to Beulah, New Pornographers, Blur, and the Elephant 6 collective, while managing to sound almost nothing like any of them. From Barcelona, Spain we bring you the post-punk sounds of The Last 3 Lines with their single Fish Tank , taken from their forthcoming EP Crows. The music of The Last 3 Lines consists of the most energetic britpop rhythms mixed with distortion, the post-punk decadent sound of bands like Sonic Youth, garage and psychodelia and in times reminds you of the 70 s. With their solid live show, The Last 3 Lines are quickly building up a reputation in the independent music scene in Spain. Saviours: We Roam

Saviours: We Roam

from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog on October 27, 2009
Duration: 0
From Oakland, CA, Saviours deliver a sharp burst of shredding, riffing metal for today s Daily Dose with We Roam , from their newest album Accelerated Living. Saviours have made the necessary adjustments to deliver the goods with revitalized rage and the smell of burnt blood in the air around them. The sludge of previous efforts is all but vanished, replaced with forged steel riffage, Austin Barber’s ragged vocals, and precise, metallic authority. New lead guitarist Sonny Reinhardt (ex-Watch Them Die) pushes the band into furious, locked in riffing, making that Motorhead-meets-Exodus-meets-Born Again-era Sabbath crossover record, the one you always dreamt of, a threatening reality. Full, thick production courtesy of Phil Manley (The Fucking Champs) opens up Scott Batiste’s drums and Cyrus Comiskey’s bass to the volleys of war. From their debut self-titled album, this is Devil from Montreal-based band Beast, who are playing various venues this week in NYC for the CMJ Music Marathon and Film Festival. It’s hard to tell you what we do. when we first started doing it we had no idea either. Count it in, see what happens. Slightly amused, massively inspired and very curious, we kept  searching and then  locked and loaded this CD. What’s the backstory? Well, we live in Montreal. Betty Bonifassi sang on the Oscar nominated soundtrack, Triplettes of Bellville…. sang at the Oscars actually. Betty also sang on the hit DJ Champion album “Chill ‘em all” which she toured to sell outs everywhere. Jean-Phi Goncalves has written, produced and played drums for Araine Moffat, Pierre Lapointe, Jean Pierre Ferland, Lauryn Hill and many others. He is a founding member of Montreal’s Plaster. She Swings, She Sways: What I Wouldn’t Do

from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog on October 17, 2009
Duration: 0
We ve got some Saturday morning Americana for you today folks, from Iowa collective She Swings, She Sways. Taken from their 2008 album Wasted Love Songs, this is What I Wouldn t Do . The members of She Swings, She Sways were all born in Iowa and raised within 30 miles of each other. Nobody could have known that beginning in 2005, the only thing separating them would be the number of trips they’ve each taken around the sun. She Swings, She Sways coalesced in the only apartment building in downtown Ottumwa, Southeast Iowa’s post-industrial wasteland, when an acoustic duo (John Gordon and Cory Canny) met long-time drums and bullfiddle rhythm section (Jason Bolinger a few broken hearts; and the rescue of Sassafras, a horse stuck in a frozen Kansas pond. And even though the road can be hard, they’re always able to find a girl’s bed to sleep in (though she may not be in it), and her mom usually makes them muffins in the morning. She Swings, She Sways released a self-titled EP in the winter of 2005, which was quickly snatched up by audiences across the Midwest. July 2008 marks the release of their first full-length record, Wasted Love Songs, which was recorded only a block from the band’s home and will be put out by Authentic Records of Des Moines. “Wasted Love Songs,” is truly a full-band effort; with each member contributing their own story of wasted love, or getting wasted due to unrequited love, depending on whom you ask. As he says, The songs you hear here were home recorded in a home. The majority of this album was done in the first 5 months of 2009 because of unemployment due to moneygeddon. It s an album of simple, heartfelt folkey goodness from a man and his guitar, his vocals have an irresistible Glaswegian tinge, and it s free! Inara George: Accidental

From her soon to be released album Accidental Experimental, this is Inara George with Accidental . The Accidental Experimental isn t like a regular record says Los Angeles-based songwriter Inara George of the 11-song release. This was like digging into the back of the closet and bringing out your winter clothes. Inara George wears many outfits. Also known for her work as one half of retro-electro duo The Bird and The Bee, Inara George s debut solo album, All Rise was a hit for KCRW and included a cover of Joe Jackson’s Fool’s In Love which was made popular on Grey’s Anatomy and accompanying soundtrack. All Rise featured keyboards by Greg Kurstin having been introduced by producer Mike Andrews. The two formed The Bird and Bee soon after. In 2008 Inara delivered the epic odyssey An Invitation, a lush and sweeping collaboration with Van Dyke Parks and a 24 piece orchestra that the Wall Street Journal called urbane and lots of fun it s an album that gets better in time as the interplay between Ms. George s voice and Mr. Parks work continues to reveal itself. Some of the songs on The Accidental Experimental have been with George for some time, including a few which would become source material for An Invitation. Working closely with producer and frequent collaborator Mike Andrews (Donnie Darko, Grey Boy All-Stars) they have outfitted the Accidental Experimental with a mixture of baroque pop, experimental folk, and romantic balladry that fans of both her solo work and band efforts will immediately find familiar and essential The Accidental Experimental is out October 21, 2009 digitally on Everloving Records. Samuel James: Cryin’ Blind

Samuel James: Cryin’ Blind

from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog on October 02, 2009
Duration: 0
Today s Daily Dose gives you some soulful blues to end the working week. From Samuel James, with the track Cryin Blind from his album For Rosa, Maeve and Noreen. James’ musical lineage stretches back to immediate post-slavery. His grandfather (b. 1890) played guitar in contemporary blues styles of the era. James’ father was a professional pianist, and trombone player. Samuel learned to tap dance at five, learned piano at eight and toured the Northeastern circuit professionally by 12. Samuel lost his mother the same year and spent his teens in foster homes. At 17 he reunited and rekindled a relationship with his father. Samuel James fully discovered his musicianship after a young woman broke his heart. He booked a flight to Ireland figuring the gray and rainy climate would match his mindset. Short of funds to make it home, he learned harmonica from local street musicians. Collecting enough change to make it back to Maine, he gave up a nascent painting career and dove head first into the guitar Live, Samuel James includes some older material in his set, and when playing a song created by a previous blues master he truly makes it his own. His stamp of originality is evident in every song he picks. Clearly the historical torch is being passed to him from today’s elder masters and yesterday’s originators. Does that make him authentic? Let the listener decide if that is even the question. Samuel James is the most relevant young blues artist to come our way in quite some time. From the ever prolific Anton Barbeau, we bring you the title track from his 13th album Plastic Guitar. With but a few years remaining until 2012, Anton Barbeau has been busier than ever, spreading his pre-apocalyptic psychedelic pop far and wide. California-born, but currently residing in Cambridge, England, Barbeau has toured the UK from tip to tail, and has confused and amused audiences from Istanbul to Berlin with his mind-bending stage-show and auto-neurotic humour. He s supported a crazy range of other artists, from Martin Carthy to Mono, Robyn Hitchcock to Robin Williamson, and is as awkwardly comfy in a smoke-and-feedback drenched village farmhouse as he is in a Paris piano bar. As a songwriter/recording artist, Barbeau is remarkably prolific. His latest release, Plastic Guitar, is his 6th since 2006, and features a variety of styles, from 60 s-vibed classic pop to laptop bleep-bop and electro-kraut grooves. J. Tillman: Earthly Bodies

J. Tillman: Earthly Bodies

from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog on September 26, 2009
Duration: 0
From his 6th album Year In The Kingdom, this is J. Tillman with Earthly Bodies . Year In The Kingdom unravels some kind of galactic wilderness. Tillman s 6th album lyrically borders on mystic; proffering a transcendent union, an effortlessness. Strange and honest, this song cycle inhabits it s own idea-scape; one seemingly obsessed with wrestling death. These are afterlife dialogues of a mysterious future. Celestial badlands.Unknown to just about everyone, Tillman started recording in April, tracking most of the instruments during the two week session himself. Hammered dulcimer, banjo, recorder, cymbals of varying size and wheezing air organs all feature heavily and lend YITK it s bizarre scale, conjuring tidal shifts with tiny movements. The string arrangements, performed by Jenna Conrad, as well as transposed from Tillman s sung direction, were intended to rest on chords almost counter-intuitively, bringing to bloom complex, decontextualized tones. Most noticeable upon first listen, however, is the production itself. While most of Tillman s records evidence some shambolic home recording, YITK is undisturbed throughout. Out up front of the mix, and dry as a bone, Tillman s voice is featured in a way unlike any of his previous records. YITK sounds liberated; it is far and away Tillman s most joyful work. Created with little input or context, it is seemingly disinterested in communicating much else than a meditation for the few who allow themselves to listen with an open heart. Naja Rosa: When The Smoke Clears

Naja Rosa: When The Smoke Clears

from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog on September 20, 2009
Duration: 0
Fresh from her debut album, today we bring you When The Smoke Clears from Denmark s Naja Rosa. A child of music, Naja Rosa was born into a family of many songs and stories. Her mother and father, Annisette and Thomas Koppel, lead members and founders of the legendary Danish rock group The Savage Rose took her on the road before she was even born. Growing up in the south harbor of Copenhagen, Naja was singing and writing songs from an early age and went on to sing background vocals in her parents’ group for almost a decade. As a part of the The Savage Rose she also landed two of her own compositions on their 2008 Danish Music Award-nominated release, Universal Daughter and wrapped a European tour with the band last fall. This year Naja finished her debut album, with all songs written and composed by her, in a little analog Copenhagen studio. The record was mixed by renowned producer Bryce Goggin (Pavement, Nada Surf, Apples In Stereo) at his Trout Studio in Brooklyn, NY. The sound may be reminiscent of beatnik rock and blues from the 50’s through the 70’s, but there’s a lot more going on here. Similar to the moodiness of a Tarantino soundtrack, Naja’s vocals are deep, soulful and pure. Full of life and often with a wink of humor, her strong, melodic songs can take you from a rocking Saturday night to a bluesy Sunday afternoon. [Musebox bio] Upcoming shows: New York, NY, September 15 Just months from the release of her debut album, Naja Rosa will be performing at New York City’s Pianos on Tuesday, September 29th. Darla Farmer: Mechanical Thoughts

Darla Farmer: Mechanical Thoughts

from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog on September 17, 2009
Duration: 0
Bringing some delicious chaos to your Thursday morning, today s Daily Dose is from Nashville, TN band Darla Farmer. Darla Farmer arose from the kind of disenchantment one can only experience when living in the musical mold known as Nashville. This septet is a rousing douse of musical Discordia, who makes it their goal to sonically please, displease, and please again. Inspired by Tom Waits, The Blood Brothers, Man Man and other musical outfits alike, their arrangements include guitar, bass, drums and vocals, topped with a blasting horn section, piano and violin. Using this instrumentation to their advantage, Darla Farmer is simultaneously tumultuous and triumphant; chaotic and organized. Darla Farmer’s first full-length album, “Rewiring the Electric Forest,” (2008 Paper Garden Records) creates a musical mattress made of rock and roll springs, pop comfort, and seedy industrial firmness accentuated by a pillow of psychedelic cerebral focus. Their music leads the listener to a bedding of insightful melody, but not without the necessary turmoil to keep you up at night. Whether the topic is apocalyptic or the distortion of history, the desperation of being stuck within the cogs of mechanical routine, or the plaguing sensations of dreams, Darla Farmer manages to marry word to sound in a beautifully grotesque matrimony that is both curiously endearing and frighteningly absurd. [Bio from Paper Garden Records] With a new EP in the works and set for release later this year,Darla Farmer are one band definitely worth keeping an eye on! Ten Year Vamp: Never Know

Ten Year Vamp: Never Know

from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog on September 12, 2009

Never Know is the leading single from Albany, NY power-poppers Ten Year Vamp s newest album Don t Act Like You Know Me. Not only do they rock hard, but because of their legions of loyal fans they were able to release this record through very unconventional (and brilliant) means.. Ten Year Vamp is a female fronted, high energy, modern radio rock band with pints full of personality, charm, and sex appeal. They’ve been described as the next No Doubt, and have won numerous local, regional, and National awards. Ten Year Vamp has sold thousands of CDs even landed on the Billboard Charts, and have performed 2-4 shows a week for the past 6 years. Ten Year Vamp have beaten the odds and found an incredibly loyal following and tremendous success all without a record company backing them. In fact, when they wanted to put out their latest release, they went to their fans to get funding. Guitarist Mark Rose explains, “We had a crazy idea. We thought why not have our fans become the record company? We had 60 people give us anywhere from $25. to $2,000. We then put 80 songs up on a website and let our fans choose the 12 songs that would go on the album.” Their crazy idea worked and their fans are now more motivated than ever to help Ten Year Vamp become the Next Big Thing. Each owner will receive their fair percentage of album sales based on how much they invested, says Rose. Owners also voted on which photos should be used for the album, including the cover. The group has been credited by Forbes, CNBC, Yahoo!, AOL Money and Finance, Columbia s School of Journalism and countless other news sites as completely reinventing the way records are recorded, marketed and sold. Mojave: For a While

Mojave: For a While

from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog on September 09, 2009
Duration: 0
Today s Daily Dose track For a While comes to you from Vancouver band Mojave s second album Crow s Funeral. Mojave are lead singer/guitarist LJ and guitarist/sometimes singer Paul. They are an elusive pair, no last names given, but after hearing their album you could feel as if you know them, such are the depths to which they plunge into their emotions and experiences. Part folkish-rock, part symphonic and entirely emotive, the album is a haunting mix of urgent, pleading vocals, delicate guitars and rich, warm strings. The instrumentation is pleasingly varied, moving from epic, almost operatic numbers full of strings like this Daily Dose track, to banjo-led ballads (the title track), with some theramin thrown in for colour on Wake Up . The lyrics are consistently poignant, and delivered so beautifully and tentatively that the emotional feel of each song is truly compelling. There is a sense of vulnerability on this record that makes you feel as if you ve become privy to someone s innermost thoughts, and an honesty that makes it captivating if not a tiny bit unnerving. However, the dark secrets of this album are cut through in the middle by California , a hopeful and uplifting track that lends some sunshine to an otherwise heartwrenching record. Crow s Funeral is a dark, resounding album full of many different layers, both musically and emotionally, which gives a glimpse into the lives of its composers that can catch you off guard; a rare feat, and a beautiful one.
