Insomnia Radio #159: FU Robot
from Insomnia Radio: Kill Your FM September 28, 2008
The year is obviously 2008, not 2005 as the evil announcer at the show header describes. Yes, as you will quickly notice, there is some sort of robotic, computer, and videogame nerdery meshed together unseamlessly in this episode, gladly supplied by this uber-geek. Seriously, we ve got some great tracks and a few appearances by DJ s from last month s New Media Expo in Las Vegas, not to mention two artists have blood and sun in their names; what are the chances, and could that be an ominous sign? Enjoy and as usual, please help support all the hard-working artists below. TRT - 50:38 Not work safe! IR: The Winter Sounds - Drive to Athens
from Insomnia Radio: Kill Your FM September 19, 2008
We recently received a message from one of our favorite bands here at Insomnia. Patrick Keenan of The Winter Sounds wanted to proudly share one of the new tracks they just recorded over at Cacophony Recorders in Austin, and rightly so. Pinebox is the name of this beautiful new track and is now being released on a 3 song EP before the band makes it way to Athens in October and November to start afresh on their next full length album. The band would really appreciate any donations or EP purchases to help them make this goal, so they can rightly sink their heart and soul into the creation of the next full length we are all eagerly anticipating. Five A.M: Just Say Anything
from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog July 19, 2008
“’Raise the Sun’ is an album of love, hope, and reaching for something bigger than oneself,” says lead singer and songwriter Trent Yaconelli. “I grew up believing the best kind of music was more than something to dance to. It was something that could change someone’s perspective, change someone’s life, bring people together or change the world. That’s what this collection of songs is about, and that’s what this band is about.” Incredibly, “Raise the Sun” marks the third time Five A.M. fans have helped the band realize their music. In 2003, Five A.M. fans raised $21,000 to fund the groups’ debut album, “Degrees of Falling.” For their second outing “This Morphine Life,” they were literally pushed into the studio by the president of a recording college, who happened to hear them playing live for a campus webcast. One Becomes One Hundred: Characteristically Cruel
from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog July 15, 2008
Formed in early 2006 in San Francisco, California, One Becomes One Hundred is an independent, alternative pop/rock band. The name implies exponential growth stemming from simplicity, a phrase that aptly describes a style of crescendo from soft lulls to choruses with sweeping energy and volume. A gestalt combination of layered guitars, melodic baselines, commanding vocals, and smart songwriting reclaims a sound once thought to be forever lost in the pop underground. Inspired by Interpol, My Bloody Valentine, The Smiths, Low, Editors and others, One Becomes One Hundred pulls from many influences while maintaining originality. One Becomes One Hundred consists of John McCoy (vocals/guitar), Brett Arnott (bass), J. Miladin (guitar), and Aaron Hazen (drums). Boxer The Horse: Boneyard
from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog July 13, 2008
Finding its home in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, what began as a folk duo consisting of guitarist/vocalist Jeremy Gaudet and bassist Richard MacLeod eventually grew into Boxer The Horse with the addition of drummer Andrew Woods and Isaac Neily on guitar and keys. Together for two years, the four almost 20-somethings have been performing around Charlottetown with a few stops in Halifax and a showcase at the 2008 East Coast Music Awards in Fredericton along the way. After recording a short five song demo, the limited pressing of only 50 copies were quickly nabbed at a Battle of the Bands for 16-year old French exchange students in 2007. They followed it up with their debut EP The Late Show, which they recorded with Adam Gallant at his studio in PEI and released in April 2008. From the Beatles-y opener “Boneyard,” which was featured on PEI’s annual compilation album Well Oiled II, to the upbeat sing-a-long closer “Ohio,” The Late Show is six solid tracks emphasizing the group’s versatility and rich musical influences. Boxer The Horse’s signature mix of classic rock n’ roll and jangly-pop draws on some of music’s biggest names including The Kinks, Bob Dylan, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Strokes and Tom Waits. The Boxing Lesson: Dark Side of the Moog
from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog July 07, 2008
From their album Wild Streaks Windy Days (2008) The third release from The Boxing Lesson, Wild Streaks Windy Days is a simultaneously modern and classic journey through the dark side of the conscious mind. These 12 new tracks explore the contrasts between dark and light, love and lust, space and time, sacrifice and indulgence. Lead boxer, Paul Waclawsky, flexes his song writing muscles and his space echoes like never before on the timeless recording inspired by the Austin indie music scene and radio emissions from outer space. Paul’s voice shows maturity and his epic sonic guitar textures are psychedelic and lush, like Cassiopeia A, the Birthplace of Stars. Mixtape: Insomnia is Warped ‘08 [Side A]
from Insomnia Radio: Kill Your FM June 20, 2008
The 2008 Warped Tour engine fires up today in Pomona, California (US) and the musicians invited will spend the majority of the summer nomadically performing across the country, storming toward the East Coast and then making their way back to Carson, CA for a grand finale in mid-August. I ve done my best to filter out the most breathy angst, gutteral Middle Earth vocals drowning out stellar instrumentation, excessive voice modulation, and tearful weeping hearts. What s left are around fifty of the stronger tracks from a more well balanced range of music that I could locate, spread across three mixtapes - the first of which you can listen to here. You ll find that some artists in this compilation are playing the entire tour, while a few have been chosen to play select dates. Please enjoy and keep your eyes out for the rest of the series, right on the heels of this hourlong driverless ride. Muahaha! We hope you enjoy the exclusives, classic Kung Fu dialogue, and a full hour long ride through a theatrically charged show featuring some of the best music being released worldwide, as well as the corniest cinematic dialogue we could get our hands on.
