Stuporhero: There Goes the Rainbow, BabyStuporhero: There Goes the Rainbow, Baby
from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog
July 24, 2008

Seattle s Stuporhero is back with their third and latest album, Weightless, and they are pleased to announce that it s available as a free download here on their website. In addition to high quality 320 kbps MP3s, they are offering AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format) and FLAC (Free Lossless Audio Codec) files. More from Stuporhero: We thought long and hard about what to do with this new batch of songs and determined that the typical avenues of producing, distributing, and promoting an album are cost prohibitive to the band at this time. We ve decided that releasing the music for free is the best hope we have at present to achieve our goal, which is for our music to be heard, shared, and hopefully enjoyed by as many people as possible. While we re in the generous spirit, we re also offering free downloads of our first two albums, It Would Be Nice To Wake Up and Last Star Shining. Also available for free download on our website is Lo-Fi Lounge Volume 1, a collection of 4-track demos and studio outtakes. Please help them spread the word. July 23, 2008

Henry Bliss is a singer-songwriter from Brussels and is now playing with the “Sidewalkers” (Olivier Van Steirtegem: guitars, piano; Cédric De Meersman: bass, backing vocals; Mounir Kadjaj: drums, backing vocals. Why Bliss ? “To be honest, I wanted a name that would perfectly complement my first name (Henry) and easy to pronounce in French and English. This last name must also express an emotional affinity with my inner self, with my songs and compositions. I chose for the antithesis. My songs express mostly bad feelings, escape or misunderstanding. On the other hand, “bliss” means beatitude, serenity or happiness. This duality represents my vision of the basic human condition. Caverns: This Are SyntaxCaverns: This Are Syntax
from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog
July 21, 2008

Instrumental rock music how does that phrase make you feel? Some people fall asleep after just hearing the word instrumental . People need lyrics, a catchy hook, and a singer to focus on, right? This is where Washington, D.C. s Caverns comes in. Neither Mathy nor Spacey, Caverns side-steps many of the things that have become cliche in instrumental rock and forge a sound that varies between the beautifully melodic and the intensely discordinant and everything in between. With the release of Sing Along , a 5 song e.p. recorded by J. Robbins at The Magpie Cage Studio in Baltimore, MD, Caverns have committed every ounce of their live intensity to tape. Way to Go, Einstein: Walk Through FireWay to Go, Einstein: Walk Through Fire
from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog
July 20, 2008

From one of my favorite regions in Canada - Way to Go Einstein hails from Vancouver, British Columbia and we apparently enjoy saying their name so much as it doubles as a nice age-old method to convey epic failure to someone. On the flipside of the meaning, Einstein has a successful sound that jumps a lot of musical pandoric trees ala Sigur Rós, Jump Little Children, Coldplay, and seems to have a slight shoegaze element that you d possibly find layered in an Ulrich Schnauss collaboration. While navigating this musical obstacle course, they still remain grounded with their own unique vision for the artwork which takes it forward in some very interesting directions and to promising heights. A few months ago they had the privledge of having Kevin McDonald (Kids in the Hall) announce one of their shows, testing new material and crushing heads. We ve included an extra highlight video below if you d like to experience some of that night for yourselves. You can support Way to Go, Einstein through iTunes and can also pick up a physical copy of their debut album, Hide and Seek Champion over at CDBaby. Five A.M: Just Say AnythingFive A.M: Just Say Anything
from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog
July 19, 2008

“’Raise the Sun’ is an album of love, hope, and reaching for something bigger than oneself,” says lead singer and songwriter Trent Yaconelli. “I grew up believing the best kind of music was more than something to dance to. It was something that could change someone’s perspective, change someone’s life, bring people together or change the world. That’s what this collection of songs is about, and that’s what this band is about.” Incredibly, “Raise the Sun” marks the third time Five A.M. fans have helped the band realize their music. In 2003, Five A.M. fans raised $21,000 to fund the groups’ debut album, “Degrees of Falling.” For their second outing “This Morphine Life,” they were literally pushed into the studio by the president of a recording college, who happened to hear them playing live for a campus webcast. Bag of Toys: Smile So WideBag of Toys: Smile So Wide
from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog
July 18, 2008

Starting out with a few appearances at a local open-mic showcase, Bag of Toys has quickly risen up the San Francisco venue circuit by entertaining the masses at venues such as The Independent and Slim s while sharing the stage with popular acts such as Pato Banton, Sean Kingston, John Cruz, Fishbone, The Expendables, and the B Foundation. Bag of Toys just released their second full-length album July 1st. Entitled Afternooner, the album was produced by Andy Zenczak at Gadgetbox Studios in Santa Cruz, mastered by John Cuniberti (Dave Matthews, The Grateful Dead, Aerosmith), and features 13 contagious tracks which not only have the signature sound that made their debut album popular, but also incorporate some new elements such as funk, country, and Latin rhythms. Undeniably, Bag of Toys has invented a sound all their own. Featuring two acoustic guitars, the music offers a relaxed vibe supported by a catchy groove and rock-oriented rhythm section. So sit back, grab a beer, and enjoy the imaginary sand in between your toes because Bag of Toys will take you away to a better place with what the band jokingly refers to as “acoustic surf-rock that doesn t suck.” If you like tunes along the lines of Slackstring, The Expendables, the Mother Hips, or that one dude who sings fairytales about brushfires, make sure you pick up BoT s album at iTunes, e-music, Amazon, or CDBaby. One Becomes One Hundred: Characteristically CruelOne Becomes One Hundred: Characteristically Cruel
from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog
July 15, 2008

Formed in early 2006 in San Francisco, California, One Becomes One Hundred is an independent, alternative pop/rock band. The name implies exponential growth stemming from simplicity, a phrase that aptly describes a style of crescendo from soft lulls to choruses with sweeping energy and volume. A gestalt combination of layered guitars, melodic baselines, commanding vocals, and smart songwriting reclaims a sound once thought to be forever lost in the pop underground. Inspired by Interpol, My Bloody Valentine, The Smiths, Low, Editors and others, One Becomes One Hundred pulls from many influences while maintaining originality. One Becomes One Hundred consists of John McCoy (vocals/guitar), Brett Arnott (bass), J. Miladin (guitar), and Aaron Hazen (drums). Nico Stai: You Came AroundNico Stai: You Came Around
from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog
July 14, 2008

From Los Angeles, CA - Nico Stai has just released his newest four song EP, Dead Pony, a precursor to his second full length album coming to us all in the near future, undoubtably after this quality new teaser runs its course. When talking to Nico outside the confines of a venue experience, its hard to determine where exactly Nico s mild accent originates from, it being only palpably recognizable outside his singing. Apparently Nico is originally from Spain and like many artists worldwide has witnessed firsthand the trepidation of major labels backing out on project commitments. His former project Tinpaco had the unfortunate experience of being shisted by the Euro branch of the WB. Nico quickly moved forward from this trying experience on his own and started assembling tracks which reflected on the trying times following this period. You can hear a lot of the reflections in the beautiful time capsule he released as his first album, Park Los Angeles. Nico has since moved forward a bit from the stripped down sound on that album and has been playing quite a bit with a full band, definitely a natural step forward in the progression of his newest soundscape. You Came Around is my personal favorite on Nico s new EP, Dead Pony, and a natural selection for todays Daily Dose. You can pick up the new EP at CD Baby or for around $4 on iTunes [cs] DOWNLOAD | SUBSCRIBE Spread It Around: Hide Sites
Boxer The Horse: BoneyardBoxer The Horse: Boneyard
from Insomnia Radio: Daily Dose MP3 Blog
July 13, 2008

Finding its home in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, what began as a folk duo consisting of guitarist/vocalist Jeremy Gaudet and bassist Richard MacLeod eventually grew into Boxer The Horse with the addition of drummer Andrew Woods and Isaac Neily on guitar and keys. Together for two years, the four almost 20-somethings have been performing around Charlottetown with a few stops in Halifax and a showcase at the 2008 East Coast Music Awards in Fredericton along the way. After recording a short five song demo, the limited pressing of only 50 copies were quickly nabbed at a Battle of the Bands for 16-year old French exchange students in 2007. They followed it up with their debut EP The Late Show, which they recorded with Adam Gallant at his studio in PEI and released in April 2008. From the Beatles-y opener “Boneyard,” which was featured on PEI’s annual compilation album Well Oiled II, to the upbeat sing-a-long closer “Ohio,” The Late Show is six solid tracks emphasizing the group’s versatility and rich musical influences. Boxer The Horse’s signature mix of classic rock n’ roll and jangly-pop draws on some of music’s biggest names including The Kinks, Bob Dylan, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Strokes and Tom Waits. This edition offered here is from the original Jamaican recording from the Dread at the Controls Master-tape. There he developed his own unique broadcasting style, which has been adopted by virtually every reggae radio show in Jamaica and the world today. His radio show, which became known as Dread at the Controls, was firmly established as the ‘Number One Radio Show’ in Jamaica. Mikey Dread was awarded Top Radio Personality of the Year in 1977-1978. After this album dropped In 1978 and after many altercations with management and then program director about him playing too much reggae on the radio, Mikey Dread resigned from JBC. Mikey Dread decided to expand his career by getting more involved in the actual production of not only his own music, but also the work of others such as Sugar Minott, Junior Murvin, Earl Sixteen, Wally Bucker, The Ovationz, Sunshine, Jah Grundy, Rod Taylor, and many more in the following years - The Clash, UB40, Seal, Izzy Stradlin, and much later on, Insomnia favorites aptly named, The Blizzard of 78. July 08, 2008

The LK is an experimental pop outfit from Malmo, Sweden. Pouring musique concrète-style collages of sound into iconic pop arrangements, they craft their own kind of playful, elegant micro-jangle using equal amounts lofty melodies, scratchy voice memos, field recordings, guitar/horn improvisations and dark wit. This year, they released their 11-song debut album VS. The Snow . Recorded with a bare minimum of equipment, the record was built largely by glueing Lindefelt s sonic paintings, lyrics and voice to Fredrik s simple, beautiful melodies and chords. The simplicity, the surreal high drama and the obvious tension between structure and chaos make for crisp, stylish noise-pop mayhem with a human warmth, melancholy and wry sense of humor. July 04, 2008

Happy Independent s Day. Today we bring you a glowing nugget from the new, yet fire-tested Seattle, Washington group Search/Rescue. The song is entitled Fireflies from S/R s debut 10 song CD, The Compound , released in late February - right before their March performance in Austin, Texas. I managed to catch them at Spiro s and was lucky enough to have a great vantage point up near the stage-front to soak up most of their performance (see attached picture). Thankfully the crowd wasn t too packed as they didn t have a bunch of Vampire hipsters swarming the venue. A familiar face whom I helped judge a music event with here in LA walked though the doors halfway in which really cast a surreal air over most of the set. Search/Rescue was formed from the ashes of Gatsby s American Dream and Acceptance, and subsequently reforged into this brand new promising project. They are apparently the first clients announced under the new Eyeball Management roster. Their album The Compound is available on iTunes.  Go treat yourself! July 02, 2008

Schematics marks the third LP from Zolof the Rock & Roll Destroyer, and the first since 2003’s dance-a-thon Jalopy Go Far, released on Eyeball Records (My Chemical Romance, Thursday). Since then, the band released an EP featuring Kenny Vasoli of the Starting Line and Anthony Green from Circa Survive and Saosin, and recently colaborated with friends Reel Big Fish on a six-song split exclusively containing duets between the 2 bands. When not in the studio, Zolof tours nationally with bands like the Gym Class Heroes and Motion City Soundtrack. These pop-rock angels have earned their wings and achieved a greater rock realization with their creation of Schematics. The moog synthesizers and jump-up-and-down sing-a-longs are still mainstays in Zolof the Rock & Roll Destroyer’s new songs but also present is a maturity of songwriting that deepens their musical pool… even if that pool is filled with Kool-Aid. Rex and Spiritualized with a dash of Yo La Tengo, it wouldn t do them justice. The Turn-ons have released three full length albums: The Turn-ons, East, Parallels and the EP, Love Ruined Us. And now for a head-trip around the planetary systems. From the UK, experimental electronic duo OrtzRoka has been recently described as half mental techno, half down tempo mint and water by Fluokids. I have no earthly idea what that really means although it sounds like a sobering glass of water to the face at the end of a mildly eye glazing headphone session on the summer patio. OrtzRoka cut their teeth DJing, and creating remixes for more established artists such as Simian Mobile Disco, Bloc Party, and Peter, Bjorn Big City ). PLANETS slowly submerses itself into the nodes of the brain, its alien beats battling back and forth like the creeping ink in the video you are about to witness. To fully appreciate the track PLANETS you really need to view the accompanying video. It was directed by Dan Lowe of Partizan Films, who was nominated for Best New Director at the 2007 CAD Music Video Awards. It s definitely my pick for best video of the year to date. Secondary goals are to cause dancing and to be mean to people who don’t dance because they think they’re too cool. The tertiary goal is to discover uncharted territories, both physical and metaphysical. Quaternary goals are being unreasonably loud, celebrating the existence of horses, and being really pissed off that 21+ concerts exist. ALL AGES FOREVER!!
