George De Fretes and the Royal Hawaiian MinstrelsGeorge De Fretes and the Royal Hawaiian Minstrels

Especially for all fans: 2 beautiful songs by grandmaster George "Tjoh" De Fretes and his Royal Hawaiian Minstrels. Legendary steelguitarist George De Fretes was born December 23rd, 1921 in Bandoeng (Bandung) - Indonesia (Dutch Indies) as son of KNIL army soldier Anton Balthasar De Fretes and Carolina Tersamas. As a kid he used to listen to the radio whenever his favourite Hawaiian artist Sol Hoopi would be on. At age 16 George forms his own group the Royal Hawaiian Quintet with his brother Arie De Fretes and together they would win their first contest in 1937 with George's own composition Royal Hawaiian Hula. Another contest was won in Soerabaja (Surabaya) -- Indonesia (Dutch Indies), spring 1938, honoring the band as Champions Of The Archipel. At this point the band had already changed their name into the Royal Hawaiian Minstrels. The Royal Hawaiian Minstrel would soon become the most wanted and best paid band in the whole of Indonesia (Dutch Indies). During the World War II the occupating Japs didn't allow Hawaiian music being played since to them it was the music of the enemy (USA), so the band was forced to change their name. They adopted the name Suara Istana (voice of the palace) and started succesfully playing traditional Krontjong (Keroncong) music. After the war the band changed their name back to the Royal Hawaiian Minstrels and became more populair than ever. The band was sometimes even split in two in order to play two different places at the same time! Unfortunately the radical changed social and political situation towards Dutch Indo's and Amboinese people in Indonesia forced George De Fretes to go to Holland -- Europe in 1958. While still on board of the ship Johan Van Oldebarneveldt, George got a telegram from Phonogram producer Jan De Winter who instantly wanted to sign him as Phonogram's exclusive recording artist. The deal was closed upon arrival and this was the start of the Royal Hawaiian Minstrels European career. Their Hawaiian shows were famous and the audience absolutely loved it when George played complex songs such as Tickling The Strings blindfolded as if it really wasn't that big of a deal. Perhaps it really wasn't that big of a deal for him, just like playing multiple instruments such diverse as the violin, drums, saxophone, trumpet, banjo and guitar wasn't that big of a deal for this true musical genius. Besides Hawaiian and Krontjong (Keroncong) music, George De Fretes also loved to play with various now legendary Indorock bands such as the Black Dynamites and the Black Magic. Just another prove that his versatile playing style could fit any form of music. In 1966 he even did an extended tour through Germany, Switserland and Scandinavia with the almighty Indorockin' Tielman Brothers. After recording an album with Frank Valdor's German orchestra he moved to the United States. November 19th, 1981 George De Fretes died in Los Angeles of a heart attack and left his family and many fans around the world heartbroken. As a last token of respect George De Fretes was buried next to his idol, friend and fellow Hawaiian steelguitarist Sol Hoopi. Over the years George De Fretes recorded over 60 albums and his original style of playing set the standard for all steelguitarists. Although he was of vital importance for his orchestra the passing of George De Fretes did not mean the end to the story of the Royal Hawaiian Minstrels. With brother Peter De Fretes on steelguitar now together with other family members John De Fretes, Roy De Fretes and Wanda De Fretes the sound of the original Royal Hawaiian Minstrels was kept alive during the 1980's and 1990's. However June 15th, 2005 Peter De Fretes died an unexpected death and sadly with him also died the original De Fretes steelguitar sound. A highly original signature sound that will forever remain beyond compare. Enterprise OSGi, a Discussion with Eric NewcomerEnterprise OSGi, a Discussion with Eric Newcomer
from recent posts - blip.tv (beta)
January 11, 2008

While at the Eclipse Runtime Summit, I had the chance to talk with Iona's Eric Newcomer (CTO of Iona, Co-Chair, Enterprise Expert Group, OSGi Alliance, and well respected enterprise coding guy) about the emergence of OSGi as a server-side, or enterprise technology. We discuss how OSGi came to be a technology of interest in the enterprise space, and move on to the formation of the OSGi Enterprise Expert Group. Eric goes through a high level list of what the "enterprise" here means: mostly the usual suspects of security, adding distributed functionality, messaging, scalability, and performance.I ask Eric about the process that the OSGi Alliance uses and we discuss the interesting role of the full time spec writer that the OSGi Alliance uses. As Eric outlines, there's a process pretty similar to the JCP process, where the deliverables are a specification, a reference implementation, and TCKs to verify implementations. We then discuss the overall idea of componentizing Java - what OSGi bundles and modules seek to do. As the Java world is pretty well split between Sun and OSGi's ambitions here, we touch on Eric's thoughts there and a little bit of the historic background between the two parties. Finally, we end up with a rough road-map for the OSGi Enterprise Expert Group and Eric's thoughts on the Eclipse Runtime Summit we'd both just attended. Thanks again to Eric for the interview ;>Disclaimer: Eclipse is a client and sponsored this video. Iona is also a client.

The Turtle Island Project in northern Michigan was founded by two Midwest pastors who believe the future of mankind and world is at a crossroads.Rev. Dr. Lynn Hubbard and Rev. Dr. George Cairns believe that Christians could learn a lot about nature and the environment by listening to Earth-basec cultures like Native Americans, Celts, and other Indigenous peoples.Rev. Hubbard is an evangelical Lutheran pastor, and Rev. Cairns is an ordained United Church of Christ minister. Both have extensive backgrounds in interfaith and multicultural work.Turtle Island Project volunteer media advisor Greg Peterson has more on the founders and their goals.Time: 7:00Turtle Island Project related websites:Turtle Island Project main website: http://www.turtleislandproject.orgTurtle Island TV (blipTV) http://turtleislandtv.blip.tv/Turtle Island TV (youtube) http://www.youtube.com/MunisingWhiteHorseTurtle Island (myspace) http://www.myspace.com/TurtleIslandProjectTurtle Island Project websites/Blogs: http://groups.msn.com/WhisperingTurtle http://turtleislandproject.wordpress.com/email: TurtleIslandProject@charter.net --- Links to groups/organizations in video/bios (see bios below) of the founders of the Turtle Island Project:"The Community of Religions" - a book by Rev.
