Starfrosch: Spiral Into The Storm - A Futile Veneer
from Starfrosch - Free MP3 Download - Download Free MP3 November 09, 2008
For those looking to embark upon a sonic voyage that travels far beyond the prescribed genres and sub-genres of electronic music, Spiral Into The Storm's debut album is for you. Following a self-titled EP in 2007, Toronto native Will Skol returns under the Spiral Into The Storm moniker with the 75-minute A Futile Veneer. Spiral Into The Storm s overarching elements audacious dub treatments, corroded synths, propulsive drums, and digitally reconfigured guitars are organically intertwined throughout the release. However, Skol deftly serves up this distinctive mix from strikingly different angles on every cut. There is a welcome surprise factor within the arrangements of the material as well, which constantly manages to take the listener (and dancefloor) to unforeseen corridors, peaks and vistas, without resorting to gimmickry. A bevy of the tracks are underpinned by an irresistible bounce (check out the free download of D-Town Rockers, and other album cuts such as Dub Deep Down and both versions of Doomsday), while others offer up widescreen shoegaze (Ephemeral Promises), contemplative ambience (Unforgivingly, The Moments Flash By), and serene-yet-forboding chillout (A Futile Veneer). Needless to say, this man/machine music is bent on exploring a vital spectrum of emotions. Punctuating the 12 tracks are two vocal cameos by jazz/r&b chanteuse Julie Mahendran, and some supremely funky drumkit and udu work by Groove Armada collaborator Giampaolo Scatozza. And capping things off is one for the DJs: an alternately rugged and whimsical breaks remix courtesy of Gibbs And Mellen (Toronto techno mainstay Mike Gibbs in collaboration with composer/producer Gaz Mellen). Replete with gargantuan bass synths, and a gloriously unpredictable breakdown, this mix is certain to ignite many a sound system.
