It's been a harrowing day for the family of Britt Lapthorne after body parts were found off the coast of the Croatian city of Dubrovnik, 18 days after the Melbourne backpacker went missing. But police and her family say the remains are not likely to be hers. Britt's father has met the Australian Federal Police officer who was sent to help in what has seemed a largely bungled investigation.

The international condemnation over Russia's recognition of Georgia's breakaway provinces of South Ossetia and Abkhazia has intensified. The G7 denounced the move by questioning Russia's commitment to peace, while Britain's Foreign Secretary David Miliband has called on the EU and NATO to initiate a quote "hard-headed engagement" with Moscow. Mr Miliband made the comments in Ukraine amid fears the country could be next on Russia's hit list.

US Secretary of Defence Robert Gates has ruled out the use of American military force in Georgia but the says relations with Russia might be damaged for years if Moscow doesn't cease its 'aggressive' actions against Georgia and honour the EU-brokered ceasefire. US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is now on her way to the Georgia capital Tblisi but not to Moscow.

A jury of six US military officers in Guantanamo Bay has found Osama bin Laden's former driver guilty of providing material support for terrorism. Salim Hamdan was found guilty of five of eight charges of supporting terrorism but acquitted him of two separate, more serious, charges of conspiracy. He faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. The White House said the trial was fair, but his defence team said it would appeal.

More details have emerged about the circumstances of Radovan Karadzic's capture and how the indicted war criminal managed to evade capture for over decade. Surprisingly, the 63-year-old fugitive and Europe's most wanted man was living a very public life in Belgrade working as a doctor in a private naturopathy clinic under a false identity. Sporting a long white beard and glasses, he even managed to give public lectures and publish articles on alternative medicine.

One of the world's most wanted men, Radovan Karadzic, has been arrested in Serbia after being on the run since 1997. He was Serbia's wartime president in Bosnia and has been indicted for genocide for the 43-month siege of Sarajevo which claimed 12,000 lives. He is also wanted on charges surrounding the 1995 massacre of up to 8,000 Muslims at Srebrenica, the worst atrocity in Europe since World War Two.

In the aftermath of September 11, maritime authorities turned their minds to the horrific prospect of terrorists hijacking a merchant ship and using it to attack heavily populated coastal cities. Their response was the Ship Security Alert System, a mandatory silent alarm system, that's supposed to enable a rapid response. But according to a recent report the system is a waste of money.

Three years ago, the Al-Saadis family were driving to their home in Baghdad, just a few streets away from the Australian Embassy. As they approached, an Australian soldier sprayed their car with bullets, injuring but not killing the mother and her eight-year-old son. At the time, the Australian Army said the car was driven suspiciously and failed to respond to repeated requests to stop. The family denies this and this week they lodged a landmark civil action for compensation in the Brisbane Supreme Court.

In February 2006, the United Nations General Assembly replaced the existing Commission of Human Rights with a Human Rights Council to establish a more impartial and credible body charged with monitoring respect for human rights around the world. Though the creation of this new body, comprised of 47 UN member States, has raised high expectations in the international human rights community, many issues as to the functioning and operation of the Council remain unresolved. This panel will address the challenges that lie ahead for the Human Rights Council and feature a distinguished group of speakers who represent governments, academia and the NGO community. Panelists Include: Gudmundur Alfredsson, Federico Andreu Guzman, Mark Lagon, Scott Lyons, Fernando Marino Menendez, and Diane Orentlicher (moderator). Lunch will be served. No RSVP necessary.
