Munich Franz Josef Strauss Airport

Munich Franz Josef Strauss Airport

Munich Franz Josef Strauss Airport (IATA: MUC, ICAO: EDDM) (German: Flughafen München-Franz Josef Strauß), is located 28 km (17 mi) northeast of Munich, Germany, and is a hub for Lufthansa and Star Alliance partner airlines. It lies in direct proximity to the old city of Freising and is named in memory of politician Franz Josef Strauss. The airport is located on the territory of three different municipalities: Oberding (location of the terminals; district of Erding), Hallbergmoos and Marzling (district of Freising). Munich Airport is the second busiest airport in Germany in terms of passenger traffic (34.73 million in 2008), behind Frankfurt International Airport, and the 27th busiest airport in the world. In 2009, it was named the 2nd Best Airport in Europe and fifth-best in the world by Skytrax, the air transport research company. The airport commenced operation on 17 May 1992, when operations moved from the former site at Munich-Riem, which was closed down shortly before midnight on the day before. When its construction was started in 1980 a village named Franzheim had to be demolished, its 500 inhabitants having been resettled in other places in the area. As Lufthansa's home base at Frankfurt Airport is heavily saturated with traffic and has capacity limits, cities with large frequencies are served through Munich Franz Josef Strauss airport as well as Frankfurt International. The airport was named after Franz Josef Strauß, who played an important role in German politics. Among other Strauß was a long-time First Minister (Governor) of Bavaria (the state where the airport is located). Under his government, the airport was planned. Strauß, having been a private pilot himself, was said to have a particular interest in the aviation industry and infrastructure. Naming the airport by its full name is quite uncommon, even the airport authority is only named Flughafen München Gesellschaft. In the Munich area, most people prefer the term Flughafen München (Munich Airport), sometimes Flughafen München II or simply MUC. The company operating the airport brands it as M - Flughafen München. In June 2003, Terminal 2 was finished, housing Star Alliance partners exclusively. Due to the rapid increase in traffic, a third runway is now being planned. As always with such a project, there is considerable opposition from the nearby residents, and lawsuits against the runway have already been announced.

Z?rich Airport also called Kloten Airport, is located in Kloten, canton of Z?rich, Switzerland and managed by Unique Airport. It is Switzerland's largest international flight gateway and hub to Swiss International Air Lines. Skyguide is responsible for all Air Traffic Control for Z?rich Intl. In 2003, Z?rich International completed a major expansion project in which it built a new parking garage, a new midfield terminal, and an automated underground train to move passengers between the existing terminal complex and the new terminal. In November 2008, Unique Company announced a complete renovation and rebuild of the old fingerdock 'B' structure. The visitor terrace will be temporarily closed during construction, but airport officials announced that a terrace will be included in the new structure. Z?rich International lost traffic when Swissair shut down its operations. When Lufthansa took over its successor Swiss International Air Lines (SWISS), traffic grew again. Z?rich airport railway station (Z?rich Flughafen) is located underneath the terminal. There are trains to many parts of Switzerland; frequent S-Bahn services, plus direct InterRegio and InterCity services to Winterthur, Berne, Basel and Lucerne (German: Luzern). By changing trains at Z?rich Hauptbahnhof most other places in Switzerland can be reached in a few hours. Z?rich Airport handled 22.1 million passengers in 2008.

London Heathrow Airport or Heathrow (IATA: LHR, ICAO: EGLL), located in the London Borough of Hillingdon, is the largest and busiest airport in the United Kingdom. It is the world's third busiest airport for passenger traffic and it handles the most international passenger traffic in the world. Heathrow is owned and operated by BAA, which also owns and operates six other UK airports. BAA is itself owned by an international consortium led by the Spanish Ferrovial Group. Heathrow is the primary hub of British Airways, bmi and Virgin Atlantic. Located 12 NM (22 km; 14 mi) west of Central London, England, Heathrow originally was designed to have six runways in three pairs spaced approximately 120 degrees apart but now has just two parallel main runways running east-west and five terminals. The site covers 12.14 square kilometres (4.69 sq mi). Terminal 5 was officially opened by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II on 14 March 2008 and opened to passengers on 27 March 2008. Construction of Heathrow East, to replace Terminal 2 and The Queen's Building, began in 2008, and is expected to be completed by 2012. Terminals 3 and 4 will also be refurbished during this period. In November 2007 a consultation process began for the building of a new third runway and was controversially approved on 15th January 2009 by UK Government ministers. Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport (IATA: CDG, ICAO: LFPG) (French: A??roport Paris-Charles de Gaulle), also known as Roissy Airport (or just Roissy in French), in the Paris area, is one of the world's principal aviation centres, as well as France's main International Airport. It is named after Charles de Gaulle (1890-1970), leader of the Free French Forces and founder of the French Fifth Republic. It is located within portions of several communes, 25 km (16 mi) to the north-east of Paris. The airport serves as the principal hub for Air France. In 2008, Charles de Gaulle Airport handled 60,851,998 passengers and 559,812 aircraft movements, making it the world's fifth busiest airport in terms of passengers, and Europe's second busiest (world's 8th busiest) airport after London Heathrow airport in terms of aircraft movements. In terms of cargo traffic, the airport is the busiest in Europe and the world's 7th busiest, having handled 2,280,049 metric tonnes of cargo. The planning and construction phase of what was known then as A??roport de Paris Nord (Paris North Airport) began in 1966. On 8 March 1974 the airport, renamed Charles de Gaulle International Airport, began service. Terminal 1 was built to an avant-garde design of a ten-floor high circular building surrounded by seven satellite buildings each with four gates. The main architect was Paul Andreu, who was also in charge of the extensions during the following decades. The grassy lands on which the airport is located are notorious for rabbits and hares, which can be seen by airplane passengers at certain times of the day. The airport organizes periodic hunts and captures to keep the population to manageable levels.

Terminals 3 and 4 will also be refurbished during this period. In November 2007 a consultation process began for the building of a new third runway and was controversially[8] approved on 15th January 2009 by UK Government ministers. Heathrow Airport has a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence (Number P527) that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flying instruction. Heathrow is located 12 NM (22 km; 14 mi) west of central London, England, near the southern end of the London Borough of Hillingdon. The airport stands on a parcel of land that was designated part of the London Metropolitan Green Belt. To the north, the airport is surrounded by the built-up areas of Harlington, Harmondsworth, Longford and Cranford. To the east are Hounslow and Hatton, and to the south are East Bedfont and Stanwell. To the west, the M25 motorway separates the airport from Colnbrook in Berkshire. The airports location to the west of London, and the east-west orientation of its runways, means that airliners usually approach to land directly over the city. Other leading European airports, such as those at Madrid, Frankfurt and Paris, are located north or south of their cities, in order to minimise the overflying problem. Another disadvantage of the site is that it is low-lying, at 83 feet (25 m) above sea level, and can be prone to fog. Heathrow is one of six airports serving the London area, along with Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Southend and City although only Heathrow and City Airports are located within Greater London.

Tokyo International Airport located in Tokyo, Japan, is one of the two primary airports serving the Greater Tokyo Area. It is commonly known as Haneda Airport. Although Haneda was originally the primary airport for the Tokyo region, it now shares that role with Narita International Airport. Haneda handles almost all domestic flights to and from Tokyo while Narita handles almost all international flights. In recent years, however, international service from Haneda has expanded significantly with the addition of scheduled charter flights to Seoul (S. Korea), Shanghai (PRC) and Hong Kong. The Japanese government plans to expand Haneda's international role in the future with more regional flights and off-peak charter services. Haneda handled 66,735,587 passengers in 2008. By passenger throughput, it was the busiest airport in Asia and the fourth busiest in the world, after Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson Airport, Chicago's O'Hare Airport and London-Heathrow. It is the primary base of Japan's two major domestic airlines, Japan Airlines (Terminal 1) and All Nippon Airways (Terminal 2), as well as low-cost carriers Hokkaido International Airlines, Skymark Airlines, Skynet Asia Airways, and StarFlyer. Haneda is expected to be able to handle 90 million passengers after its expansion in 2010.
