WiMAX: Wireless Goes Truly MobileWiMAX: Wireless Goes Truly Mobile
from PodTech.net: Technology and Entertainment Network - Powered by PodTech
October 17, 2008

It didn’t take long for wireless computing and the mobility it affords to become an accepted part of the landscape of public spaces, offices and homes. But there was still a catch: you couldn’t stay connected outside of the hotspots offered at cafes, airports and hotel lobbies. WiMAX changes all of that as Baltimore becomes the first city in the country where a full-scale commercial wireless broadband rollout (offered by Xohm) will mean that users can actually roam wherever they want and connect to the Internet with notebook computers and Mobile Internet Devices. It opens the door for a wide range of embedded devices in things like parking meters, kiosks and anything else you can think of that would benefit from Internet connectivity. The launch features not only new WiMAX products from Xohm, but devices from handhelds to laptops that feature Intel’s new WiMAX enabled chips. You can follow WiMAX stories on blogs.intel.com/technology and scoop.intel.com. New to WiMAX? Learn more about WiMAX here and here. And see how WiMAX is being used to connect people with education, healthcare and new opportunities in developing countries. Tags: Baltimore WiMAX, Intel, Mobile Internet Devices, WiMax, Xohm

Broadband connectivity is rapidly becoming a bottleneck issue for economic development around the world. As nations move into knowledge-based economies, an emphasis on information and communication technologies, or ICTs, is critical to addressing poverty and development concerns ranging from health and education to economic and industrial growth. Knowledge is the driving engine for economic growth, social development, cultural enrichment, and for political empowerment, according to Abdul Waheed Kahn, assistant director-general for communication and information at UNESCO. In this video podcast, he makes the case that enabling a knowledge workforce increasingly requires reliable access to information. As Intel s John Davies explains, more and more, that means bringing broadband to parts of the world where even basic economic development remains a challenge. IICD Communication Coordinator Hilde Eugelink explains how even simple, relatively small investments in education can have a significant impact on communities and economies. Hilde Eugelink is communication coordinator with the International Institute for Communication and Development and John Davies is vice president of Intel s sales and marketing group and the general manager of Intel s World Ahead initiative. Broadband access for the developing world was a key topic at the Third Global Knowledge Conference, held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in December 2007. Attendees there called for action items to to bring underdeveloped nations - including populations sometimes referred to as "the next billion" - into the connected world. Broadband services are an important component in the United Nation's Millenium Development Goals and have been identified as essential for social and economic development. Without broadband, PCs are useless. Without PCs, broadband is less needed. In this video podcast: broadband provider Alcatel-Lucent and chipmaker Intel forge a partnership at the GK3 Conference to help bring connectivity and PCs to the developing world.Tags: Broadband access, developing world, Third Global Knowledge Conference, the next billion, Broadband services, Millenium Development Goals, economic development, Alcatel-Lucent, Intel, connectivity

Nigerians are optimistic that basic technologies like mobile telephony and the Internet can change their country and their lives. As knowledge becomes power in emerging countries, people are making these technologies their own. In Nigeria, local companies are offering IT services to the developing market. One has even launched a mapping services for drivers in Lagos. The photograph pictured is of the Nigerian wireless communications regulatory agency -- equivalent to the FCC in the U.S. -- and figures prominently in the country's technological direction. Nigeria is a country in need of fast solutions and perhaps the fastest solution is needed in healthcare. Conferencing technologies, which many in the developed world yawn at, are critical to making telemedicine work. But there's more to deploying it than setting up cameras and laptops, otherwise companies like Intel--which is sponsoring such projects in the developing world--would have considered its mission complete years ago. There are other issues. PodTech's Jason Lopez witnessed a project while shadowing Intel Chairman Craig Barrett on a tour of the National Hospital in Abuja, Nigeria. Nigeria’s education system is one of the targets of the UN’s Millenium Development Goals. Some of those goals are to reduce infant mortality, combat AIDS, malaria & other diseases, and of course improve education worldwide. The millennium goal for education is to ensure, by 2015, that all boys and girls complete a full course of primary schooling. In Nigeria only about 6 out of 10 kids attends primary school. In the poorest bracket many children who do go to school start late in terms of their ages and end up chronically behind. Intel's push to bring low cost laptops to school children in Nigeria is an effort to help the country meet the millenium development goals. PodTech's Jason Lopez was in Abuja, Nigeria for Intel covering Chairman Craig Barrett's visit and filed this podcast. In a country marked by influences -- Berber, Arab, Jewish, French, Spanish -- Morocco faces the challenge of absorbing one more: information technology. Countries like India, China, Brazil and Nigeria have seen the astonishing impact that simple PCs can have on an economy - but the key to unlocking the potential of an information-driven workforce is always the same -- education. Morocco wants to create its own Silicon Valley. Intel Chairman Craig Barrett visited the country to reaffirm the company's commitment to helping Morocco shorten its road to literacy. Broadband, connectivity, Wi-Fi, accessibility and education efforts are all priorities for the ongoing efforts in developing nations and regions around the globe. Intel, along with the United Nations and International Telecommunication Union (ITU), among others, is participating this month in the Connect Africa Summit, which aims to bring together human, technical and financial resources to speed development and improvement of Africa's Information and Communication Technology, or ICT infrastructure. Expanding broadband, wireless and mobile access technologies is the current push, after indications that Africa's general ICT development is lagging behind its unprecedented adoption of mobile phone technology (400 percent in just a few years - well ahead of projections). Dr. Hamadoun Tour is secretary-general of the International Telecommunication Union. His call for what he refers to as a "Marshall Plan for ICT infrastructure development in Africa," has been heard by the United Nations, and particularly by Intel Chairman Craig Barrett who, leading the UN's Global Alliance for ICT and Development, or UN GAID, is working to bring the leading ICT companies in Silicon Valley and around the world to the challenges in Africa. The United Nations's Millennium Development Goals are driving innovation around the world, as the challenge of reducing global poverty by half by 2015 looms. The Connect Africa effort brings together private enterprise and non-governmental organizations for a two-day summit in Kigali, Rwanda, beginning on October 29, hosted by Rwanda President Paul Kagame and John Kufour, president of Ghana and chairman of the African Union. Intel's World Ahead Program, established in May 2006, has already seen the chip maker pledge more than $1 billion over five years to bridge the digital divide and bring full access to technology to the developing world. Intel research is a curious thing. The company is obviously known for making computer chips in which it invests billions of dollars on research and development every year. But lesser known and endlessly fascinating is the company's investigation into human activity itself. The chipmaking industry has gone from asking how to make faster chips, to asking how to make chips do exactly what users expect them to do. To achieve that is very difficult. In this podcast, Intel researcher Scott Manwairing investigates how people use money, especially as it transitions from a hard currency state to a digital one, and Hsain Ilahiane asks whether Muslim charities can reveal how to distribute technology access to the poor in the Islamic world. It's more than just about numbers. Tags: Intel, Scott Manwairing, Hsain Ilahiane
