The Intel Developer Forum has evolved into one of the most important technology events of the year. For anyone making hardware and software, IDF provides a way to learn about critical advances in chip design, and it gives Intel the opportunity to get feedback from developers. For the rest of the world, IDF is where Intel s latest thinking comes to light about the way people use computers and how to design better chips. At the upcoming IDF, Intel will give insights into next generation microarchitecture, mobile Internet devices, nettops and netbooks, consumer electronics, and embedded computing. In this video podcast, we take a brief look back at past IDFs leading up to this August 19-21 in San Francisco s Moscone Center West. In the days leading up to the big event, Intel Senior Vice President and Digital Enterprise Group co-GM Pat Gelsinger took time out to speak with PodTech s Michael Johnson about what, specifically, to look out for in the way of developments and news from Shanghai. Here, Gelsinger talks about the scheduled keynotes and topics, the new platforms based on the Atom processor, the role of Shanghai IDF for Intel (even as IDF travels to San Francisco and Taipei later this year!) and some of Gelsinger s fondest memories of IDF over the years. If you aren t attending in person, that s not a problem. Intel blogs will keep the information flowing in both directions with regular updates, photos and video. Beijing as a backdrop was more than symbolic for IDF in 2007. Intel does more than manufacture in China. The company does some heavy research and it plans to do more around mobility and Tera-scale chips. Although Intel has held IDF for years in Beijing, this time it came with an unmistakable energy. The Olympics are next year and construction of the stadium and other athletic facilities were in high gear just blocks from the Beijing International Convention Center. But one need only hail a cab and venture to far parts of the city to see hundreds of cranes in the sky and witness the most dynamic economic growth in modern human history. Another clue to the enthusiasm: the people themselves who seem as though they are getting to ready to take the world stage as Olympic hosts next year and as participants in the world economy. In this video podcast, PodTech captures the hardly exhaustive sights and sounds of IDF and Beijing. Tags: Beijing, IDF, Intel, China, mobility, Tera-scale, Olympics

Last week four judges IDEO Founder David Kelley, former PC Magazine Editor-in-Chief Michael Miller, GQ Associate Editor Kevin Sintumuang, and Intel CEO Paul Otellini gave the finalist PCs in the Core 2 Challenge a once-over. A few designs that made the top ten happen to be top secret and can't be shown publicly. Still, the four judges decided to move two overlooked PCs into the finalist pool. And from those they chose the winner and the runner-up. The winning system will be revealed at the Intel Developer Forum in Beijing on Tuesday, April 17th.
