A Talk In Soho About Videoblogging
from Echoplex Park Video Podcast July 10, 2005
I'm still in NYC playing around with the other videobloggers for Vloggercue, but here is a little video about our talk at the Apple store in Soho. We had a great time, and the weekend is just starting. More to come, so don't you worry your pretty little head. I saw too many great new vlogging tools as well as finally meeting many of my favorite content producers face-to-face. (Many are listed in the sidebar, so you may as well see if they posted about the event as well. The only one I've seen so far is from the very talented Chris Weagel)

Esmerelda Strange
from Echoplex Park Video Podcast June 27, 2005
In accordance with Richard BF's Instant Vlog rules (I guess he's on a Dogma 05 kick), I've made a little piece about Esmerelda Strange. She played at my bar the other week and really knows how to put on a show. The crappy image quality comes from using the Nightvision mode on my camera...sometimes I like it sometimes I don't. Makes pretty raunchy porn though. Ask the girlfriend. In terms of Richard's rules though, I don't understand the hoopla; I think about half my videos fall under his rules. Or damn close to them. I have some vids that don't follow this rules that I'm finishing up now, but maybe I'll put them on the backburner and play around with some styles that fall under his obstructions.

"This is Modern Art": Preliminary Interview and Outline
from Esoteric Rabbit Blog June 10, 2005
This is Modern Art: Preliminary Interview (QuickTime, 16.0MB) N.B. The following outline was really written for assessment, not blogging. I'm only posting it here for posterity . I have been friends with Pattavee "Art" Viranuvat since the beginning of 2004 and, even though we hardly ever get to see each other socially and really only get a chance to talk during coffee breaks, lunch hours and in passing, it has become increasingly apparent to both of us over the course of the last eighteen months that, despite our extremely different personal histories, we are very similar people. This is Modern Art is a title that I suggested in vain for what eventually came to be known as Conk Out, Art's documentary on himself, which he made in 2004. My film, which is to be titled This is Modern Art, is to explore Art as he sees himself, as I see him, and how we both see one another and our relationship, especially in light of how different our pasts really are. The film is to be made up of several different streams of information: 1. A personal video diary that I am going to ask Art to record specifically for the documentary, getting him to answer, directly to camera and over the course of one week, a number of questions that will be on a little list that I'm preparing for him. The aim of this diary is not only to get his answers, but also to see how and when he chooses to shoot them; some of Art's aesthetic choices, it should be noted, can often be incredibly raw, revealing and, indeed, strangely beautiful. 2. My own film diary, to made up of arbitrarily shot and arranged Super8 footage of Art that I will be taking in the same week that he is recording his video diary. The aim of this is to contrast: (a) how Art chooses to shoot himself and how I choose to shoot him; (b) how Art's behaviour changes, or doesn't change, when he is in private (his video diary) and in public (my film diary); and (c), on a purely materialist level, the aesthetic, textural and, ultimately, ontological differences between DV and Super8; how one may or may not seem more real and more immediate to us than the other even though both, in this case, are being used for diaristic purposes. 3. A voiceover, which I will write, but which may or may not be recorded by me personally (there are some important reasons for this, but for the time being we shall ignore them). The voiceover will be used to help to strike a balance between my diary, which is to be shot silent, and Art's, which, being shot on video, will already consist of both image and sound. Ultimately, there are a number of concerns that this film hopes to address, not only about Art, myself and our friendship, though that is certainly its explicit focus, but also about how we, as media producers, look at ourselves and one another, how we create images of ourselves, how our complex and multifaceted pasts effect out immediate and everyday presents, and how the aesthetic qualities of any given media or format can subtly effect and shape the viewer's perception of the events that have been captured on it.

Kite Circuit Location Scouting
from Esoteric Rabbit Blog June 04, 2005
Kite Circuit Location Scouting (QuickTime, 10.5MB) links: Kite Circuit We went location scouting today, which I never find all that enjoyable. Austin really had his heart set on an abandoned shopping complex out on Hope Island, but Kat – who won't censor herself for anyone – kind of didn't like it. Actually, it's not that she didn't like it so much, but that she didn't think it was feasible to shoot there, which was a fair enough comment for someone to make. She voices some of her specific concerns in the video. It is a really great location, mind you, and Austin was more than justified in arguing on behalf of it. What's more, it really did seem at the time, as I myself say in the video, that it was our only viable option. Kat's alternative – that we somehow shut down the main street of Byron Bay for four consecutive days – was ludicrous. Anyway, after we'd dropped Austin and Mel back at their place, Kat and I were driving towards Bond when I suddenly experienced a minor epiphany and suggested Market Square, a little shopping complex that's literally two-and-a-half minutes away from where I live and where I sometimes walk in the mornings to buy chewing gum and diet Coke. We went over and quickly checked it out and were really impressed by what we saw. In retrospect, I'm kind of surprised we hadn't thought of it sooner. A little later, after I'd come home, I received a message on my phone from Austin: "Market Square is great. Kat and I will meet again on Sunday to map it out. It may just work." So, yeah. That's good. It seems the day wasn't a washout after all... UPDATE: Let's not forget, by the way, that I was also the one one who came up with the genius outrageously expensive idea to shoot Flushed in the Brisbane City Hall. Let's not count our chickens just yet. Let's not even count our eggs.

Follow That Finger
from Echoplex Park Video Podcast June 03, 2005
Late night at some Pho restaurant in Oakland, playing with the fish. As videoblogging goes, this entry wont change your life, but if you used my RSS feed, plugged it into FireANT, you would then start watching a collection of other fine videos back-to-back. At least that's who I like to watch these things: all strung together. Some are slice-of-life, some are little documentaries, some are crafted stories. That is part what this whole vlogging thing is about for me. Well, that and the chicks. The hott mad action isn't a bad perk either.
