GRADUATION! I have been extraordinarily busy the past 2 months - but now it is finally over! I am finished with all my finals and will attend graduation ceremonies on Tuesday evening. Then, it's time to head out to Vegas to see my children! There has been so much in the news that is great fodder for my musings, but I really wanted to focus on school since I had 18 hours last semester (which was nuts, but its over now) - so I will try to pick up where I left off; I really enjoyed those news musings. I am not going to attach a video to this one though, I'll just add a photo or two.Pulling All-Nighters lowers GPA's Well - duh! I had been teaching that for years with my SuperScores! program; and it never ceased to amaze me how many 'lazy' students desperately argued that cramming and all-nighters 'really do work'... They never have, and never will. It is an inferior use of the law of recency - and it fails more often than it succeeds. That's really all I want to put into this udate - it was more of a big sigh/breath of relief that I am finally done with my undergrad work!

The original purpose of these updates were for my Google experiment - but that has to be put on the back burner if it interferes in any way with my studies... So, the updates may slow down until this semester ends.

Incredibly sad death of 4 year old girl.A four year old girl fell over 450 feet at the south rim of the the Grand Canyon. It is believed this is the youngest person to have lost their life from falling off the edge. Truly heartbreaking. My thoughts and prayers go out to the parents of this poor child.

Here is the weekend's news:Arizona cops didn't receive desperate calls from husband until after his wife had died. Apparently, the husbad of the woman who died at Sky Harbor airport tried warning police that his wife was suicidal. It is unclear whether he attempted to call the police and 'warn' them before or after he had learned of his wife's passing from the airline. In fact, it is unknown what the husband knew and when he knew it in relation to his phone calls to police. I think speculation should be kept at a minimum until ALL the facts are in!

>NOTE: If you are unable to view video when pressing 'Play' under the picture above (wordpress blogs), then visit the video version at it's permanent home at blip.tv.It is an interesting news morning - but before I get to the news, I'd like to take a moment and share that I had a wonderful heart lifting experience this morning when my son Matthew's classmates from several years ago dedicated a memorial bench in Matthew's honor (and another departed classmate, Sajid) at sunrise this morning. You can view pictures of the bench and the thoughtful friends of Matthew who organized, raised money, and paid for this beautiful gift by clicking on these links: Matthew's Memorial Bench Matthew's friends at benchThis morning's news items were found in USAToday.com and FoxNews.com$10 coin sold for $5,000,000!! A very secial and rare coin minted specifically for Andrew Jackson in 1834 that carries a face value of $10 was sold to a collector for $5,000,000. What made this coin special is that it was minted in 1834, yet is stamped "1804". The other major boo boo is that Lady Liberty is wearing a turbin! Check out the pics below. Halo 3 rakes in $300,000,000 in very first week! This story showcases just how powerful gaming is and will become for the future. This is just a video game - yet it is pulling in movie like numbers! This game is pretty cool to begin with - my oldest son, Zachariah, is a master at the Halo games; I have no doubt he's mastered this one already. In the story, it was stunning to discover that there have already been 40 MILLION man hours (gaming hours) played of Halo 3 in the 1st weeks release! New e-mail scam: hitman wants to save your life! This story is laughable, but also rediculous. Some nutjob is sending out emails to people claiming that there is a contract out on their life; and this hitman (with morals!) is willing to cancel the hit for the low low price of only $8,000 - $,4000 of it up front as 'good faith' money. LOL What a crock! But, some people are willing to try anything for a buck.Strange plant has unique way to pollenate. This plant, a cycad, has a cone in the middle that emits a fragrance attracting a specific type of insect called a 'thrip' that comes in and nests getting pollen all over its body. Then, the cycad heats up the cone (like an oven) and the fragrance becomes overwhelming to thrips causing them to leave and seek out the female cycads, whose aroma is much more enticing to the thrips at this point. Then, the thrips enter the female cones and complete the pollenation. Fascinating! DaimlerChrysler officially just 'Daimler'. What makes this story interesting (to me) is that the shareholders recently voted to restore the company's name to Daimler. The vote was overwhelming - 98.8% in favor! That is unheard of - truly a landslide decision if ever there was one! Still no word on if Chrysler is going to be picked up by another car maker. I tend to think that they'll get picked up (bought) by a Japanese company or maybe even Korean. My guesses are Toyota, Honda, Kia - in that order. Man kills himself after city council vote. This is a sad, sad story. A man killed himself in the city council chambers immediately after a vote was read that denied his request to rezone his home for business. (He was a barber). He simply pulled out a gun, announced that the council had "put him under..." and then put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger. I can't imagine what stress he must have been under to feel this was his only way out... Idaho woman forced to remove bra at courthouse. I thought this story was amusing after I read it. The jist of it is this: A woman wearing a bra with underwire thick enough to set off the metal detector removed her bra in order to get into court. There is more, but read it for yourself and make your own conclusions... ;-) No photos were included of the offending bra in this story, LOLChris Matthews goes of the deep end! This NBS anchor (and abject MORON) has publicly accused the President of being caught in criminal behavior. Without doubt, this will not be picked up by the drive-by media - and even if it did, it would somehow be characterized as a brave foray into the 'truth' of Bush's 'reign of terror'; or something to that effect. I hope Limbaugh, Boortz, or Hannity pick up this story and crush the Libs. Bob Barker sued... AGAIN! Price is Right, Bob Barker, and the owners of the long running hit are being sued yet again by another woman claiming intolerable work conditions. I am more convinced than ever that some people will say anything, tell any lie, to get ahead in this life - no matter who it hurts...........

>NOTE: If you are unable to view video when pressing 'Play' under the picture above (wordpress blogs), then visit the video version at it's permanent home at blip.tv.Ray Hollister's News Update for October 5th, 2007.News articles today come from USAToday.com and FoxNews.comLexus unveils the IS F sports car. Toyota (TM) is planning to sell 7,000 Lexus IS F cars globally a year, about 5,000 or 6,000 in the U.S., 500 in Japan and the rest in Europe. The $67,000 sportscar, which can hit speeds of 168 mph, rolls out Dec. 25 in Japan, and in February or March in the U.S., Toyota executive Takeshi Yoshida said. The car's official website pronounces it the "fastest Lexus ever." Odd and expensive gift ideas for the holidays. This story highlights some of the most rediculous and outrageously expensive gift ideas for the coming holiday season; my favorite is the Dragon topiary - kinda cool, but I'd NEVER consider something that expensive!North and South Korea agree to peace and economic sharing! This story is stunning AND fantastic! It appears that both North Korea and South Korea have ostensibly agreed to end the decades old war between them and even cooperate economically. Read this story, it is a good sign! Bill Gates excited about Microsoft's future: This is a no brainer! Gates discusses the Zune and other MS advancements and how the company will be a continuing frontrunner in the digital age. His comments come a week from his official 'retirement' date as he begins his new philanthropic career. Duck billed dinosaur amazes scientists. Scientists are amazed at the chomping ability of a newly described duck-billed dinosaur. The herbivore's powerful jaw, more than 800 teeth and compact skull meant that no leaf, branch or bush would have been safe, they say. "It really is like the Arnold Schwarzenegger of dinosaurs it's all pumped up," said Scott Sampson, curator of the Utah Museum of Natural History. Duck-billed dinosaurs were previously known to have been among the most imposing herbivores, with hundreds of teeth and a body that could knock down trees. Gryposaurus monumentensis, at least 30 feet long and 10 feet tall with a robust jaw and thick bones, was like a duck-billed dinosaur on steroids, said paleontologist Terry Gates. Britney gets supervised visitation. Britney was awarded supervised visitation yesterday by the judge. Britney never even showed up to court. She is in desperate need of getting her life under control - she is makng things very, very difficult for her kids in the long run. Seinfeld makes cameo on 30 Rock. I have never seen this show. I don't suspect I ever will. But I do find it interesting that Jerry Seinfeld is making an appearance on it - even after winning Emmy's, the show is still trying to gain more viewers, or perhaps keep the viewers they do have and stifle the hemmorhaging of those going elsewhere. This is GREAT! I love this story - especially if it wasn't scripted. It appears that Johny Fairplay was presenting at an awards ceremony and was getting booed; on walks Bonnaduce (uninvited and unannounced) and Fairplay does a stupid move and jumps on Bonnaduce and starts gyrating in a rather vulgar way. Bonnaduce tosses him over his head and Fairplay loses a tooth or two, and files battery charges against Bonnaduce. I hope it gets "tossed" out just like Fairplay was... LOL This is truly sad. I could almost wish they hadn't reported this - two firefighter that died battling a fire in a restaurant were discovered to have had .27 level alcohol in one and cocaine in the other. These men are/were heroes for what they faced day in and day out - but the abuse of alcohol and use of cocaine seriously tarnish their memory. It is a sad story that need not be presented to the entire world; I fear it may harm the good name of valiant firefighters everywhere. ..........

Today has been abuzz with Brittney Spears news - I am going to avoid it; I am deliberately focusing on everything else!Mazda creates very cool hybrid sports carMazda future hybrid sports car will use hydrogen fuel and electricity. It is a visual beauty! I think this is merely the concept car, but it sure is something to look forward to! Rush Limbaugh railroaded!Rush Limbaugh is getting short shrift yet again. This time, I think the left is so far out of bounds that it will backlash terribly! Which doesn't bother me in the least. As luck would have it, I heard this particular broadcast live that is being trashed by the left and MediaMatters. The facts are absolutely undeniable - Rush was commenting on the Democrats sanctifying a known, CONVICTED criminal/liar as a war hero and proof that our troops don't want to be in Iraq. Rush called this 'Veteran-who-never-was' a "phony soldier" and the Dems have gone insane trying to tie this OBVIOUS comment about ONE soldier into some demented generalization about all soldiers who disagree with Bush. MORONS!!!! Anita Hill still sticking to her lies...I have always thought Judge Thomas got a raw deal many years ago during the Anita Hill scandal and confirmation hearings. All these years later it now seems that it was one entire smear campaign against Thomas because he was NOT a Liberal voice; the Libs/Dems could not control him in any fashion. I think it is shameful that Anita Hill still tries to stick to her story when there is an abundance of evidence to prove otherwise. His new book, "My Grandfather's Son", is now out and promises to be a great read!

Click on the "play" below the opening pic above to get a brief overview of the morning's news in video format. Here are the stories for today! Will.i.am has a new album out that details his life with women - at least a light hearted attempt at such! He will tour with his group The Black Eyed Peas overseas this year; there will not be a U.S. tour until they put out their 5th album. Microsoft's Halo3 for Xbox has caused a tremendous stir. First-day sales of Microsoft's Xbox 360 space adventure totaled $170 million in the USA. It was the most successful video game rollout in history and, the company boasted, topped the $151 million Spider-Man 3 made at the box office in its opening weekend in May. This is the kind of gorgeous graphics that I hope to see in an RPG soon - even so, if I had the extra money, I'd LOVE to get Halo3! Bill O'Reilly claims he is getting smeared by the leftist media. I completey agree. He has his UNEDITED remarks on his Radio Factor program and his comments are not even CLOSE to racially problematic! In fact, taken in context, he is actually commenting AGAINST racial prejudice! Shame on the media for being such idiots. This nutcase is now in Bolivia trying to worm his way into their good graces - adding yet another third world minority to his list of "supporters"... Ahmedinejad is now touring in South America drumming up more "we hate America" buddies... Hope he fries, and soon... This story kills me - I hate reading stories like these. This is one big reason why I think the death penalty is a must and absolutely necessary! This precious little girl was seen in a perverted sex video; police are concerned for her safety and are trying to find her. Please read this story and pray for this poor little angel...A Russian woman's 12th baby is born weighing 17 lbs! Tatiana Khalina, 42, delivered the girl by caesrean section at a maternity clinic in Aleisk, a town of 30,000 in the Altai region in southern Siberia, Svetlana Gildeyeva, a nurse at the clinic, said Thursday. Meteorite causes panic in a Peruvian town - huge numbers of people get sick and blame it on a meteorite. Authorities believe the sickness is nothing more than mass hysteria. In fact, authorities are not even convinced a meteor landed or created any craters at all... General Pace believes that homosexuality is immoral and should not be condoned by the U.S. Military. His strong stated opinion has caused outrage in congress...........

Just lie in the "real world" - Junk Mail is still king! What seems like eons ago, the U.S. Post Office allowed junk mail to proliferate through the system - and quite frankly, I don't think it was wrong of them to allow junk mail to be sent! Junk Mail may be irritating and totally useless to the recipient, but if it didn't work, it would NEVER have become a multi-billion dollar industry! (Direct Marketing). So it is with spam that floods our email accounts. The graphic above is a screen capture of this story, which shows that 83% of all email is spam! This isn't really a surprise is it? The big difference - as I see it - is that unlike junk mail in your mail box (outside your home), spam can contain malicious programming that could wreak havoc on your computer system(s). Be that as it may - consumers are becoming more educated as time goes on and spam is now a part of life - you learn not to even open spam; unless you are interested!! (and isn't that the point of the sender?)I can't tell you how many times I have received something like the following:"ATTENTION Ray Hollister - Important information enclosed! Are you tired of having no money? Tired of having no life? Buy this (enter mind numbingly stupid product/service here) and you'll have all your problems solved instantly!!! Want to be an inspirational speaker? This will do it overnight! Want to be a millionaire? Within seconds you will be! Want a better sex life? These magic pills cure all!!"Obviously, I am being a bit absurd, but I have received spam like the above in some form or another for nearly a decade! Spam promises everything from incredible growth of body parts to instant wealth even if I am the dumbest human alive (and I'd have to be to believe that drivel).Spam is NOT going to end - in fact, it will just continue to evolve; even today there are websites that I consider to be nothing more than spam waiting for someone to happen upon!Either way, I don't see this 83% statistic to be anything new - and if anything, I think it may be a bit low!..........

I love it when scientists come up against an unexplainable phenomenon - like the one above. Check out the story here. Basically, scientists discovered a new planet that is nearly twice the size of Jupiter, but has the density equivalent of balsa wood; and THAT is not supposed to be able to exist under current theories and physics models.Scientists are scrambling to try and figure this out - which is a good thing; a better understanding of this mystery may have a wonderful impact on science overall...Read it for yourself - it is fascinating!RH GMSF WP GMSF B Go!
