VIDEO: Clinical Trials Influenced by Conflicts of Interest, Overeating Primary Cause of Obesity Epidemic, Americans Washing Hands More Often

from Insidermedicine Daily News (Video) on May 11, 2009

(May 11, 2009 - Insidermedicine) From West Virginia - According to research in the journal Cancer, clinical trials are more likely to report improved survival outcomes when the investigators behind the study report a financial conflict of interest. In a review of 124 oncology trials, researchers found those reporting direct industry funding or other financial relationships were over twice as likely to report improved patient survival than those with no conflicts. From the Netherlands - According to research presented to the European Congress on Obesity, overeating is the primary cause of the rise in U.S. obesity levels. Researchers found that changes in physical activity played a minimal role, but excessive calorie intake is almost entirely to blame. They conclude that in addition to promoting physical activity, public health policy should focus on encouraging less food intake. And finally, from Boston - According to a poll conducted by the Harvard School of Public Health, Americans are washing their hands more often and are less fearful of the H1N1 flu than they were a week ago. According to the poll, 67% are washing their hands and using sanitizers more often, compared to 59% a week ago. Meanwhile, 61% are not concerned about developing H1N1 flu, compared to 53% last week. VIDEO: Polyunsaturated Fats Reduce Coronary Artery Disease, Teriparatide Speeds Up Healing Process of Fractures, PTSD Influenced by Current Health Status

from Insidermedicine Daily News (Video) on April 17, 2009

(April 17, 2009 - Insidermedicine) From Denmark - According to research in The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, intake of polyunsaturated fats instead of saturated fats can help reduce coronary artery disease. In a review of 11 studies involving over 340,000 patients, researchers found that substituting polyunsaturated fatty acids for saturated fats as 5% of caloric intake was protective against coronary events and coronary deaths. From Rochester - According to research from the University of Rochester Medical Center, a drug for severe osteoporosis may have some unexpected benefits. In a study of 145 patients, researchers found that 93% of those treated with teriparatide experienced complete recovery of slow-to-heal fractures within 12 weeks. The researchers conclude that the drug stimulates the bone's stem cells, resulting in rapid healing. And finally, from San Diego - According to research in the British Medical Journal, combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder may be influenced by health status before deployment. In a study of 5,400 veterans, researchers found that those who already had mental or physical health problems were more than twice as likely to develop PTSD. This at-risk population could be targeted for PTSD prevention programs. For Insidermedicine in 60, I'm Allison Chow from Queen's University.
