May 23, 2008, just south of Ellis, Kansas. This supercell had already produced numerous tornadoes and was headed NE at 42 mph toward Ellis. Positioned to intercept possible tornadoes, I filmed these insane inflow winds as the storm approached. This was the excitment of a May 2008 TempestTour storm chase in Julesburg, Colorado. You can see some rotation on the ground from the car which looks like a tornada but was either a dust devil or a developing land spout. Once we get out of the car, the inflow of wind into the storm is so powerful! You can see the tumbleweeds, dust and grass blowing with a greenish looking sky in the background. Some nice cooling of the upper levels happened in the NE New South Wales and South East corner of QLD and later in the day the Wide Bay & Burnett Regions. With modest instability..juicy CAPE and these cooling uppers early in the afternoon, some small but intense thunderstorms started to develop. The main cell developed around 3pm around the northern Gold Coast Hinterland and quickly exploded into a hail dumping small supercell which was producing an incredible amount of Cloud to Ground Lightning strikes along its merry way! This particular storm developed on the eastern side of the ranges and took a more or less N-NE path. This put it on a collision course with the Redlands area and parts of South-East Brisbane. Numerous power outages were reported from these areas, no doubt due to the frequent lightning... which was quite close at times and was averaging around 4 per minute where i was at one stage! Only a few hundred metres away from being absolutely smashed by up to golf ball size which had been warned by the Bureau of Meteorology. Surprisingly this storm was quite slow moving however, and went from unleasing torrents of hail to completely raining itself out in quite a short period of time. Somehow my car managed to escape with only a few renegade smaller pieces of hail.. But nothing too bad.. It was eerie to actually hear the hail falling just a few hundred metres away with hail shafts clearly visible! Inflow into this thing was at gale force strength it felt like at times and was quite intimidating at times! I don't plan on getting much closer than this to losing my next windscreen.
