Synthetic Drug May Help Fight Obesity, Long-Term Treatment for Opioid Drug Addiction Works Best, Hepatitis C Infection Increases Risk of Kidney CancerSynthetic Drug May Help Fight Obesity, Long-Term Treatment for Opioid Drug Addiction Works Best, Hepatitis C Infection Increases Risk of Kidney Cancer
from Insidermedicine Daily News (Video)
November 05, 2008

(November 5, 2008 - Insidermedicine) From Switzerland - According to research in Cell Metabolism, a new synthetic drug may help fight obesity. In the study, researchers fed mice a high fat diet for 4 months and also gave them 100 to 500 mg per day of an experimental new drug that works in a similar fashion to resveratrol, the natural compound found in red wine. Mice on the high dose of the drug did not become obese, and had their levels of cholesterol, fasting blood glucose and insulin come down. From Philadelphia - According to research in the Journal of the American Medical Association, teens addicted to opioid drugs are more likely to quit if they receive longer-term treatment. In a study of 152 patients, researchers found that those who received continued treatment with the combination medication buprenorphine-naloxone were significantly less likely to test positive for drug use after 4, 8 and 12 weeks than those who received short-term treatment. And finally, from Detroit - According to research presented to the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases, hepatitis C infection may increase the risk for kidney cancer. In a study of over 3,000 patients with hepatitis C, researchers found that the rate of renal cell carcinoma was 0.6 per 100. In contrast, the researchers found that, among 64,000 uninfected individuals, the rate of renal cell carcinoma was only 0.3 per 100. Larger studies will be needed to confirm these results. Acomplia Increases Risk of Psychiatric Disorders, ADHD Linked to Nicotine Dependence, Flavonoid Increases Effectiveness of Cancer TreatmentAcomplia Increases Risk of Psychiatric Disorders, ADHD Linked to Nicotine Dependence, Flavonoid Increases Effectiveness of Cancer Treatment
from Insidermedicine Daily News (Video)
October 24, 2008

(October 24, 2008 - Insidermedicine) From London - According to the European Medicines Agency, the risks associated with the anti-obesity drug Acomplia outweigh the benefits. Researchers examined evidence from ongoing clinical trials and found the increased risk for psychiatric disorders such as depression unacceptable, noting that the risk was double in those taking Acomplia. The agency recommends that doctors stop prescribing Acomplia and review the treatment of patients currently taking the drug. From Boston - According to research in the Journal of Pediatrics, smokers with ADHD are more susceptible to nicotine addiction. In a study of 80 patients with ADHD and 86 controls, researchers found that, among ADHD patients, 69% had smoked at some point in their lifetime, compared to 44% in the control group. In addition, 41% of ADHD patients were current smokers, compared to only 17% of controls. And finally, from California - According to research in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, a compound found in many fruits and vegetables may increase the effectiveness of cancer treatments. The compound, a flavonoid called apigenin, was found to make cancer cells more vulnerable to a chemotherapy drug in a lab dish. These findings may lead to new drugs modeled after this compound that could achieve the same effect clinically. For Insidermedicine in 60, I'm Allison Chow from Queen's University.
Pneumonia Vaccine Recommended for Smokers, Thyroid Disorders Linked to Glaucoma, Depression During Pregnancy Increases Risk for Preterm DeliveryPneumonia Vaccine Recommended for Smokers, Thyroid Disorders Linked to Glaucoma, Depression During Pregnancy Increases Risk for Preterm Delivery
from Insidermedicine Daily News (Video)
October 23, 2008

(October 23, 2008 - Insidermedicine) From Washington - U.S. federal advisers have recommended that smokers be vaccinated against pneumonia, along with children and the elderly. If this recommendation is accepted by the CDC, it would be the first vaccine recommendation targeted specifically at smokers. Previous studies have shown that the risk of pneumococcal disease rises with the number of cigarettes smoked, and smokers account for half of otherwise healthy adults with pneumococcal infections. From Alabama - According to research in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, thyroid disorders increase the risk for glaucoma. In a study of over 12,000 adults, researchers found that having a thyroid problem at some point in life was linked with a 38% increased risk for developing glaucoma. The researchers suggest that there is a biological link between thyroid problems and glaucoma which accounts for these findings. And finally, from California - According to research in the journal Human Reproduction, depression during pregnancy increases the risk of premature birth. In a study of nearly 800 pregnant women, researchers found that those with mild depression had a 60% increased risk for preterm delivery, while those with severe depression were more than twice as likely to deliver their baby early. The researchers suggest that emphasizing the treatment of depression in prenatal care could lead to a significant reduction in preterm deliveries. For Insidermedicine in 60, I'm Dr. Susan Sharma.

Western Diet Increases Heart Attack Risk, Strokes Milder Among Those Who Exercise, Many Parents Do Not Realize Children Are OverweightWestern Diet Increases Heart Attack Risk, Strokes Milder Among Those Who Exercise, Many Parents Do Not Realize Children Are Overweight
from Insidermedicine Daily News (Video)
October 21, 2008

(October 21, 2008 - Insidermedicine) From Hamilton - According to research in the journal Circulation, a Western style diet increases the risk of heart attack. In a study of over 5,700 heart attack patients and over 10,600 controls, researchers found that those whose daily intake was high in meat, eggs, fried foods and salt were about 30% more likely to have a heart attack than those whose diet was high in fruit and vegetables. Meanwhile, an Oriental diet high in tofu, soy and other sauces did not appear to affect heart attack risk. From Copenhagen - According to research in the journal Neurology, strokes are milder and less likely to cause impairment in those that are physically active. In a study of 295 patients who had suffered a stroke, researchers found that those who were the most physically active were 2.5 times more likely to have had a mild stroke, and half as likely to be left impaired, compared to those who exercised the least. Physical activity is also considered a modifiable risk factor for the prevention of stroke. And finally, from Australia - According to research from the University of Melbourne, many parents do not know if their children are overweight. In a study of over 2,100 children and their parents, researchers found that 49% of parents of overweight children thought their child was of average weight. The researchers suggest that if parents falsely believe their children to be of average weight they are unlikely to help their child correct their weight. Air Pollution Harms Heart Attack Patients, Vitamin B12 Deficiency Increases Risk of Memory Loss, New Diabetes Medication Shows PromiseAir Pollution Harms Heart Attack Patients, Vitamin B12 Deficiency Increases Risk of Memory Loss, New Diabetes Medication Shows Promise
from Insidermedicine Daily News (Video)
September 10, 2008

(September 10, 2008 - Insidermedicine) From Boston - According to research in Circulation, air pollution can harm those who have suffered a heart attack. In a study of 48 patients, researchers found that the tiny particles found in air pollution can disrupt the ability of the heart to conduct electrical signals. This can be particularly harmful in those with coronary artery disease. The researchers recommend staying indoors on smoggy days and avoiding heavy traffic after being discharged. From Oxford - According to research in the journal Neurology, a vitamin found in meat, fish and milk may help prevent memory loss in the elderly. In a study of 107 volunteers, researchers found that those with the lowest levels of vitamin B12 were much more likely to show signs of brain shrinkage over a five-year period. The researchers are now planning a trial on B vitamin supplements, to see if taking them can slow brain shrinkage in the elderly. And finally, from Rome - According to information presented at the meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, a new diabetes medication is showing considerable promise. In a study involving over 1,300 patients, combining the new drug, saxagliptin, with metformin resulted in up to 45% of patients experiencing decreases in HbA1c, compared to 29% of those taking placebo. The drug is currently awaiting approval by the FDA. For Insidermedicine in 60, I'm Dr. Susan Sharma.
MRI Delays Breast Cancer Treatment, Once-Weekly Byetta Controls Blood Sugar, Lack of Sleep Increases Risk of Falls in Elderly WomenMRI Delays Breast Cancer Treatment, Once-Weekly Byetta Controls Blood Sugar, Lack of Sleep Increases Risk of Falls in Elderly Women
from Insidermedicine Daily News (Video)
September 08, 2008

(September 8, 2008 - Insidermedicine) From Washington - According to research presented at the American Society of Clinical Oncology's Breast Cancer Symposium, women newly diagnosed with breast cancer who get an MRI end up delaying cancer treatment by weeks. In a study of 577 patients, those who received an MRI had a three-week delay in the start of treatment, and were also more likely to have a mastectomy than those that did not have an MRI. From Toronto - According to research in the Lancet, the once-weekly diabetes drug Byetta may control blood sugar better than twice-a-day drugs. In a study of 259 patients with type 2 diabetes, those who received Byetta once a week saw their HbA1C levels falls to an average of 6.4%, compared to 6.8% in the twice-daily group. However, the FDA has cautioned that there may be a link between Byetta use and pancreatitis, and is in the process of drafting stronger labeling for the drug. And finally, from Chicago - According to research in the Archives of Internal Medicine, older women who do not get enough sleep are at higher risk of falling. In a study of nearly 3,000 women aged 70 or older, those who slept 5 hours or less per night were more likely to experience two or more falls in a year than those that slept more than 7 hours per night. In other terms, those with a sleep efficiency of under 70% were 1.36 times more likely to experience a fall. For Insidermedicine in 60, I'm Dr. Susan Sharma.
Ibuprofen First for Fevers, Fish Oil Better Than Statins for Heart Failure, Soft Drinks in Schools Increases ConsumptionIbuprofen First for Fevers, Fish Oil Better Than Statins for Heart Failure, Soft Drinks in Schools Increases Consumption
from Insidermedicine Daily News (Video)
September 05, 2008

(September 5, 2008 - Insidermedicine) From New York - According to research in the British Medical Journal, starting treatment with ibuprofen in children with fever may offer the best results. In a study of 146 children between 6 months and 6 years of age, those that were given ibuprofen first, followed by a combined therapy of ibuprofen and acetaminophen, had their symptoms relieved at a significantly faster rate. Over 24 hours, the combination therapy reduced fever duration by 4.4 hours. From Italy - According to research published in the Lancet, fish oil supplements may be better than statins at treating patients with chronic heart failure. By comparing the results of two different studies, the researchers found that taking an omega-3 fatty acid capsule was slightly more beneficial than taking a statin. The researchers speculate that the positive effect of fish oils on the body's HDL cholesterol levels may be the cause. And finally, from California - According to research in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, soft drink availability in elementary schools increases consumption among children. In a study of 11,000 fifth graders, researchers found that when soft drinks are available in schools, 25% will consume at least one soft drink in a week, representing about one-half their total consumption. The researchers point to previous studies that have shown even a small increase in daily soft drink consumption can contribute to the development of obesity over the course of adolescence. SelectPlusThe Number of People Infected With HIV IncreasesThe Number of People Infected With HIV IncreasesThe Associated PressA new report says the number of Americans infected by the AIDS virus each year is higher than the government has been estimating. The country had roughly 56,300 new HIV infections in 2006. an increase of about 16,000. (August 4)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] There is troubling news in the fight against H-I-V and AIDS in this country. More people are infected now than researchers first thought.SOT: Our new estimate shows that the epidemic is and has been worse than we previously knew. New technology is allowing doctors to measure a specific H-I-V antibody in the blood, which can determine if a person has been infected in the past five months. SOT: We now know that HIV infections were never as low as forty thousand per year. We estimate that about fifty thousand infections occurred per year in the early 1990's. In 2006, that number jumped to more than 56 thousand infections. 53 percent of new cases occurred among homosexual men. 45 percent among African Americans. SOT: these estimates are a wake up call for us all. We need to to more as individuals communities and as a nation to increase testing and also increase prevention efforts Doctors estimate there are one million people living with H-I-V in the United States. 25 percent of those people do not know they are infected. Researchers say the new figure is due to the better blood test, and new statistical methods. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****) ANCHOR VOICE:-------------------------VIDEO PRODUCER: Kevin White------------------------------VIDEO SOURCE: JAMA Handout --------------------------VIDEO APPROVAL: Yes------------------------------VIDEO RESTRICTIONS: Courtesy----------------------------------SCRIPT/WIRE SOURCE: BC-MED--HIV Infections, 3rd Ld-Writethru,1207------------------------------------ Author: AssociatedPress Keywords: hiv numbers infected increases Added: August 4, 2008

July 25, 2008

Author: employmentcros Added: Fri, 25 Jul 2008 00:36:09 -0800 Duration: 2062 million American workers earning minimum wage will receive a 70 cent raise in their paychecks as the federal minimum wage increases from $5.85 to $6.55 an hour. But dont go spending that extra amount of cash just yet as The Labor Department made their announcements on inflation with energy costs soaring nearly 25 percent and the price of food rose more than 5 percent. According to the Economic Policy Institute, they say that twenty-three states and the District of Columbia have laws making the minimum wage higher than the new federal requirement. The increase is the second of three annual increases required by a 2007 law. Next year's boost will bring the federal minimum to $7.25 an hour.

Blackberry Usage Increases Surgery on ThumbsBlackberry Usage Increases Surgery on Thumbs

StrangeBlackberry Usage Increases Surgery on ThumbsBlackberry Usage Increases Surgery on ThumbsThe Associated PressDoctors now say that the over-use of blackberrys is now leading to an increase in surgery on thumbs. (May 30)[Notes:ANCHOR VOICE] They are everywhere, and some people just wouldn't know how to function without one.SOT: i've had it over a year and I use it everyday, couldn't live without it keeping us all going and keeping us on the move, getting us where we're supposed to go when we're supposed to be there, knowing when I have those early across town meetings, that's what's important What Melissa Lejsak is describing is her addiction to her blackberry. For some people over-use is so bad, the hand-held devices are called 'crack'-berries. And now doctors say that over-use is leading to an increase in surgery and discomfort with people's thumbs. SOT: you know it makes your hands tired, your arms, your neck, everything's small and you're trying to do it fast too SOT: If you're getting some soreness in your thumbs you're probably over-doing it , if you are getting catching in your thumb you probably should see a hand specialist, and maybe seek some treatment before it gets bad Last year, 40 percent of all cell phone users text messaged ... To the tune - on average - of 188 messages per month. Doctors say scaling back on the amount of texts you send is the first remedy. But for many ... Talk is cheap.SOT: After I walk out of this office, a lot, i'm really connected to it, you know it's like put the blackberry down, move away from the blackberry, oh probably 30, 35 times. Ultimately, doctors say 'blackberry' thumb is a form of tendonitis and can be treated with arthritis medication. ___ ___, The Associated Press.(****END****) ANCHOR VOICE:-------------------------VIDEO PRODUCER: Kevin White------------------------------VIDEO SOURCE: WKRN--------------------------VIDEO APPROVAL: Yes------------------------------VIDEO RESTRICTIONS: On-Screen Courtesy----------------------------------SCRIPT/WIRE SOURCE:------------------------------------ Author: AssociatedPress Keywords: blackberry surgery usage increases on thumbs Added: May 30, 2008
