Why is it that the formulaic books being published are so ubiquitous they're everywhere. Why is it that publishing never changes. Why is it that a few people -- the choosen ones -- make all the money. Why is it that publishers go through such "down times" when they find it difficult to sell books and less and less books are being sold. Why is it that the agents have such a strangle-hold on publishing. Why is it that the same people continue to be the same players in a business that has no idea -- not one -- where it's going next. Why is it that the cultural institution of book publishing has become stagnant and arrogant. Why is publishing sacred and above any critical point of view whatsoever. I would suggest three things plague this business like cholera: tribalism, turf, greed, bad writing, protectionism, and just plain incompetence.
