Ann Ronell (1906-1993) is said to have had a love affair with George Gershwin, who is said to have written this piece instead of her when they were said to have been together having their affair. Chère despair. Why? I don't believe in any of these stupid legends. Their relationship is a fact. This Lady herself was a well trained composer, so while their relationship lasted there probably were two american composers together at the same time - just being in love and probably having some serious fun. The fact she was a woman does not mean she couldn't compose professionally. Also the piece is most probably not George Gershwin's work, 'cause it sounds much different than George's otherwise well known harmonization patterns would suggest. WikiPedia is not always right. So instead of believing stupid legends I recorded five (in words: "5" ;-) humble versions of my own (and some stolen) improvisational ideas on that song, using various musical influences. Maybe this is another interesting fact: every one of these five takes contains different errors and/or concept variations. If above fiancé of George Gershwin wouldn't have written this song, I surely would have played entirely without any errors and all five recordings would sound like the standard sheet music of "Liza".
