12042959 The October Issue of DisabilityNation http://www.mefeedia.com/entry/the-october-issue-of-disabilitynation/12042959/
From : DisabilityNation: An Audio Magazine By And For People With Disabilities
Welcome to the October issue of DisabilityNation. This episode features news and interviews from the disability community. The October issue includes an interview with former MLB pitcher Jim Abbott, a look at a video project called Many Faces, One Voice and we'll attempt to unravel some of the confusion relating to the ADA Amendments Act. Keep reading to learn more. The U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) has launched the PITCH Campaign (Proving Individuals with Talent Can Help) to encourage businesses to hire people with disabilities and to educate them about the talent people with disabilities can bring to their business. Former 10-year Major League veteran and Olympic Champion Jim Abbott is serving as the campaign spokesman. Jim Abbott is a former Major League Baseball pitcher who played for the California Angels, Chicago White Sox, Milwaukee Brewers and New York Yankees, from 1989 through 1998. However, Jim may be best remembered for playing Major League Baseball despite being born with only one hand. Jim grew up in Flint, Michigan, attending Flint Central High School, where he stood out as both an elite pitcher and quarterback, leading his high school football team to a state championship. Despite being drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1985 MLB Draft, Jim opted for college and pitched at the University of Michigan. He played at Michigan for three years, where he was honored in 1987 as the first baseball pitcher to ever win the James E. Sullivan Award as the top amateur athlete in the United States. The following year was a remarkable one for Abbott, as he was drafted 8th overall by the California Angels in the 1988 draft, in addition to being a key player on the Gold Medal-winning USA Baseball team at the 1988 Summer Olympics. Jim then went on to join the starting rotation of the California Angels in 1989, without ever pitching one minor league game. He won 12 games in his first professional season, the most wins for rookie pitcher since Mark Fidrych won 19 games in 1976. Jim compiled 87 career wins, finishing with a lifetime 4.25 ERA. His most memorable moment came on September 4, 1993, when he pitched a no-hitter against the Cleveland Indians as a member of the New York Yankees. Today, Jim Abbott resides in Southern California with his wife Dana and two children. Abbott works with The Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) on several initiatives encouraging businesses to hire people with disabilities. For the PITCH campaign, Jim, ODEP and Major League Baseball have combined efforts to help raise awareness about the talent people with disabilities have to offer. Jim joins me for this issue of DisabilityNation to discuss the PITCH Campaign, his baseball career and shares his thoughts on the World Series. Next, The Internet and social media provide more avenues than ever before for people to share their experiences with others. For those of us with disabilities this means that we have yet another way of educating others about our lives in addition to continuing our advocacy and activism. Many Faces, One Voice is a project partnering the Michigan Disability Rights Coalition and United Cerebral Palsy of Michigan in an effort to use these tools to share the stories of people with disabilities from across Michigan. In this episode, we hear the audio from Prisoner to Piss on Pity! - My journey to who I am today. The video is by Elicia Herkert of Marquette, Michigan. The Many Faces, One Voice initiative was initially funded through the at&t Excelerator Program and provided initial funding to gather resources and launch the project. While the funding has expired, the organizations involved plan on continuing their work to provide yet another tool for sharing the disability experience. In addition to hearing from Elicia, we'll also visit with Glenn Ashley of UCP Michigan and Kathryn Wyeth of MDRC to learn more about their involvement in the project. Finally, in September, President Bush signed the ADA Amendments Act in to law, thus ending a long effort to address weaknesses in the Americans with Disabilities Act caused by recent court decisions. This effort began as the ADA Restoration Act. And, after a number of changes including a new name, the bill moved through the House and Senate and on to the President’s desk. But, what exactly will this new bill accomplish and when will it take effect. We'll visit with Peter Berg of the Great Lakes Disability and Business Technical Assistance Center to learn more. From : DisabilityNation: An Audio Magazine By And For People With Disabilities
DN72: In May of 2008 Members of ADAPT celebrated 25 years of advocacy and civil disobedience that has brought awareness to the fact that thousands of people with disabilities are trapped in nursing homes, unable to secure services that would allow them to live independently in the community. As part of that celebration, a special exhibit was published that features photos and narratives, both in written and audio format, providing accounts of the 50 actions that have been held over the organization's 25-year history. ADAPT has a long history of organizing in the disability community and using civil disobedience and similar non- violent direct action tactics to achieve its goals. In 1983, as a project of the Atlantis Community in Denver, ADAPT began its national campaign for lifts on buses and access to public transit for people with disabilities. ADAPT started as American Disabled for Accessible Public Transit. For seven years ADAPT blocked buses in cities across the country to demonstrate the need for access to public transit. Many went to jail for the right to ride. This episode of DisabilityNation is the second in a two part series focusing on the history of ADAPT and features three select narratives from actions held in the early 1990's. Following their long fought victory to gain access to public transportation for people with disabilities, members of ADAPT traveled to Atlanta and began fighting to insure the supports were available so that people living in nursing homes and institutions could live independently in the community. Cassie James was at the Atlanta action and shares her experience and why ADAPT has taken up this issue. Next, we travel to 1993 and an action that was held in Washington DC. We hear from Elenor Smith Finally, we hear from Diane Coleman who talks about the action held that year in Washington. DN70: Last week, members of ADAPT in the Philadelphia area joined together to protest the ongoing institutionalization of people with disabilities in a city owned nursing home. Advocates say the home offers deplorable living conditions and that those living in the facility are subject to a poor quality of life. On Monday, August 18th members of ADAPT began their round-the-clock vigil outside of the facility. They promised to continue the protest until Mayor Nutter made a commitment to establish a plan through which those living in the facility would be transitioned to the community. ADAPT members stayed all week with the help and support of various organizations and friends in the Philadelphia area. German Parodi is an organizer with the local ADAPT chapter in Philadelphia.
