Post 9/11 Sikh Immigrant Children in America Producer & Director: Professor Bindu Chawla The documentary is a sequel to Professor Chawla's 2003 published research Sikh Immigrant Children: Navigating Dual Cultures in Metropolitan New York. In this documentary a series of live interviews are conducted with Sikh immigrant high school teenagers. The children discuss their lives in a social, cultural and educational context relating to their country of adoption (America) in comparison to their country of origin (India).Tackling the challenges and conflicts they experience with their dual identities and how they respond is a key focus of the documentary. The findings of the documentary illustrate how these children acculturate with their dual cultures, adopt and negotiate customs and traditions in a post 9/11 America.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio is a household name for all the wrong reasons. Known for accusations of racial profiling and immigration raids in Maricopa County, Arizona, Arpaio is held up as a hero by anti-immigrant groups but has created a climate of fear in his state, where the Latino community is afraid to call the police for common complaints for fear of deportation. Recently stripped of his federal authority to make immigration arrests, Arpaio continues to conduct raids and appears not to fear repercussions. Salvador Reza, U.S. Air Force veteran, community organizer and renowned immigrants rights activist, joins Laura for an exclusive interview on Arpaio's ongoing mistreatment of his community. Reza notes that the Obama administration, specifically Homeland Security secretary and former Arizona governor Janet Napolitano, have mostly made symbolic moves to control Arpaio, but in practice allow him to do whatever he wants. Esmeralda came to the U.S. seeking asylum from her native Mexico. She tried twice to enter the country legally, each time forced into detention. As a transgender woman, she was segregated and subjected to abuse from guards on her first attempt, and when she tried again, she was held with male detainees. Eventually, her claim was successful and today she works as an advocate for others who have survived sexual violence. From ColorLines, the the national magazine on race and politics, we have a story of the unintended consequences of deportation. The U.S. citizen children of immigrant parents are often left stranded when those parents are deported, often for misdemeanor offenses. A 1996 law made deportation mandatory for those convicted of any number of offenses--after they've already served their terms. "Double punishment" is bad enough, but what about the children who are left without their primary means of support?
