Scientists at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich and the IBM Zurich Research Laboratory recently used a Blue Gene supercomputer to create the most extensive simulation real human bone structure to date. Their work gives doctors a heretofore unseen "high definition" view of the strength and fragility of bones and could mean better clinical tools for the diagnosis and treatment of osteoporosis.

Developer Millard Ellingsworth is the author of this week's developerWorks feature article on "How to use the Scrum project management method with IBM Rational Team Concert and the Jazz platform," and he talks about it here. Millard encourages adoption of agile development as a member of the IBM Enterprise Content Management group. He serves his team as ScrumMaster and others as an Agile Coach and workshop leader.

More and more, IT systems have to respond almost instantaneously to an event or a collection of events. For example, the systems aboard one of the U.S. Navy’s most modern warships, the DDG 1000 destroyer, must evaluate and respond to a missile attack within 10 seconds. The latest issue of the IBM Systems Journal (Volume 47, Number 2, 2008) examines the challenges of such “responsive systems” and the latest research in the field.

Canada's fastest research supercomputer is helping search for more effective cancer treatments at the Ontario Cancer Institute. The new IBM system analyzes millions of images of proteins to identify those related to the disease and help design better treatments.

As expected, a new supercomputer built by IBM for Los Alamos National Lab topped the latest list of the world's 500 fastest computers. Other IBM machines were the second and third faster, and IBM computers accounted for more than 40 percent of the entire list.

Recent headlines report an alarming story: “U.S. Army Issues Stop Work Order on Armed Reconnaissance Helicopter Program,” “Top Computer Manufacturer Dogged by Production Delays,” “Costly Flaws Found in Navy’s Top Jet.”

The most powerful Windows-based computer in Europe is being installed in Stockholm's Umeå University. Nicknamed "Akka", the supercomputer incorporates IBM Power microprocessors, Cell Broadband Engines and Intel processors and is about 3,000 times faster than the average laptop. It is expected to handle some 46 trillion calculations per second, putting it among the top 50 fastest computers in the world.

In the last of our RSDC video series I had the chance to talk with John Simonds of IBM Analyst Relations. We spend our time talking about how John uses Web 2.0 tools and concepts to help out with his day-to-day analyst relations. For example, we talk about his use of Twitter several times with a couple of examples of how he and other IBM AR staff have monitored analysts Twitter streams to find things they need help with.We then discuss blogging, esp. as it relates to Twitter. The IBM Center of Excellence for Water Management in Dublin, will help understand some of the environmental complexities of Ireland's Galway Bay.
