Spectacular HD footage of a female Allen's Hummingbird with wing beats in perfect sync with the high-speed shutter at times, giving the illusion the wings are stopped! A female Anna's Hummingbird also makes an appearence... Details: Filmed on 3-6-2009, just as Spring begins and the seasonal/migratory species begin their return to the area. This footage was shot with a Canon HF100 HD video camcorder, 1/2000 sec. shutter speed, 1080p, 30fps. The footage was then slowed-down even further to 1/4 speed, giving an effective frame rate of 7.5fps. The first bird shown is a female Allen's Hummingbird, and has a faster wingbeat than the Anna's hummingbird (2nd bird show). At times the wingbeats were a perfect multiple of 30, so the camera's shutter froze the wings in the same prosition in the wingstroke cycle for several frames in a row - giving the illusion that the wings had actually stopped moving for short periods of time. Notice the bird is swallowing and looking around while she seems to hang there otherwise motionless. Really cool effect!

Two rival male cowbirds compete over female. Characters include the pesky dove, the hummingbird show-off, the curve-billed thrasher bully, and the cat. Filmed in the Sonoran Desert of Arizona in the spring of 2008.

I placed a Bluetooth wireless mike in the lilac bush and from 2 -- 3 feet away I got this video of these incredible little hummingbirds.
