SUSTAINABLE SECURITY: Humanity as a Weapon of WarSUSTAINABLE SECURITY: Humanity as a Weapon of War
from Revver - american Videos
July 21, 2008

Author: seeprogress Added: Mon, 21 Jul 2008 11:55:04 -0800 Duration: 463http://www.americanprogress.org/issues/2008/06/sustainable_security2.html "Humanity as a Weapon of War" is a new report from the Center for American Progress that looks at the U.S. military's emerging trend of using humanitarian assistance to achieve strategic objectives. It examines the U.S. Defense Department's efforts to counter threats such as extremism, poor governance and human suffering by aiding indigenous populations, and considers the use of development activities performed by civilian agencies to achieve the same goal. Based on original research conducted on the ground in East Africa and at US military commands around the world, this report argues that the military's efforts to achieve security through development can only be successful if they are rooted in a global strategy that puts development priorities, or "human security," first.

Yes, sweatshops are in an American Commonwealth. On an island called Saipan, a huge garment operation has been producing clothes with "Made in the USA" labels and many of these shirts are being sold in America by large corporations. Meanwhile the sweatshop workers are on an island that has a $3.05 minimum wage, despite the fact that it uses U.S. dollars. These workers are exploited by low wages, and long hours at work, while living on an island they considered America. These are mainly young female Asians from poor villages. Sometimes they don't get paid at all, other times they are forced to pay large sums to their employers as a fee to work. I hope word gets out.. Distributed by Tubemogul.

This week, in the Rotunda of the U.S. Capitol, President Bush presented the Congressional Gold Medal to Iowa native and agricultural scientist, Dr. Norman E. Borlaug. With his family present, the 93-year-old Borlaug was recognized for his lifelong work to fight world hunger through crop breeding. Sent to Mexico by the Rockefeller Foundation in the 1940s, Dr. Borlaug worked years to develop a high yielding, disease-resistant variety of wheat that could be raised in hard-to-grow areas. The wheat, and agricultural production techniques implemented at the time, has been credited with saving more than a billion lives ... and earned him the title, "Father of the Green Revolution." http://www.iptv.org/mtom/archivedshow.cfm?ShowNumber=3246 Author: IowaPublicTelevision Keywords: MarketToMarket IPTV IowaPublicTelevision hunger agriculture World Food Prize humanitarian Added: May 30, 2008

Report: Child Abuse by Humanitarian WorkersReport: Child Abuse by Humanitarian Workers

PlusReport: Child Abuse by Humanitarian WorkersReport: Child Abuse by Humanitarian WorkersThe Associated PressA Save the Children UK report released Tuesday alleges rampant sexual abuse of children at the hands of peacekeepers and international aid workers in war zones and disaster areas. (May 27)In times of global disaters -- international aid workers are supposed to be the ones that help. But a new report accuses peacekeepers from many international agencies - including the United Nations - of shocking sexual abuses on children, some of whom are as young as six. The charity group, Save the Children, says the problem has been well known since 2002 -- but that little has been done to stop it. SOT: Jasmine Whitbread, Save the Children chief executive: "The key point about the report is that children are frightened to step forward and report the cases of abuse, things like rape or exchange of sex for food because they fear reprisals." The study was based on research in southern Sudan, the Ivory Coast and Haiti. Investigators found that more than half the children they talked to knew of at least some abuse. SOT:" It ranges from anything from sex for food through to coerced sex and it really is despicable that it is allowed to carry on by this minority of people and brings the whole of the humanitarian response community into disrepute." The group thinks a new international body is needed to help fix the situation. SOT: "What we're recommending is a global watchdog be set up and local safe mechanisms for children and their families to be able to go separately to report these abuses in the safety of knowing there won't be reprisals." A spokesman the U.N. Peacekeeping Department calls the report "deeply disturbing." ___ ___, The Associated Press.
