From : - blip.tv (beta)
In Ghana, West Africa, a rural village eagerly awaits a shipment of recycled bicycles from the United States. This inspiring story begins in Boston where volunteers from Bikes Not Bombs (partnering with Village Bicycle Project) load a container with donated used bikes and parts. Through skillful packing, 450 bikes are loaded and the container is sent to Ghana. The majority of the bikes are sold in a colorful frenzy to pay for shipping costs, while the best bikes are set aside to take to the village. Ayamye* chronicles the lives of Nurse Letitia and Seth before they get the bicycles and again, one year later. These two individuals are very different from each other, the common thread being the need for transportation and the wish for positive development in their community. We experience village life with them in dry season; mining salt and tending to their farms and in the rainy season when the biggest storm known to the people of the village wipes out the road and creates hazardous conditions and a compounded transportation problem. The determined and resourceful people of the rural village let us into their daily lives in a dramatic look at how lack of transportation can impact the education, health and livelihood of their community. Ayamye* is a moving, life-affirming film that proves sustainable solutions to crisis are not always complex.

 From : - blip.tv (beta)
March 14, 2008, panelists discuss issues with the Veterans' healthcare system. - Zollie Goodman was promised that he and his family would have medical coverage when he joined the Navy. He speaks about the inadequacy of the veterans' healthcare system and his everyday struggle to maneuver through it. - Eric Estenzo and Eli Wright speak about injuries they received while in active duty and their frustrations with attempting to get treatment. Winter Soldier: Iraq and Afghanistan featured testimony from U.S. veterans who served in those occupations, giving an accurate account of what has been really happening day in and day out, on the ground. The four-day event brought together veterans from across the country to testify about their experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan - and presented video and photographic evidence. In addition, there were panels of scholars, veterans, journalists, and other specialists to give context to the testimony. These panels covered everything from the history of the GI resistance movement to the fight for veterans' health benefits and support.

 From : - blip.tv (beta)
Colonel (Ret.) Ann Wright served 13 years in the U.S. Army and 16 years in the Foreign Service. She has served as U.S. Deputy Ambassador in numerous countries around the world. On the eve of the U.S. invasion of Iraq she resigned in protest, stating that without the authorization of the UN Security Council, the invasion of a Muslim, Arab, oil-rich country would be a disaster. She remains actively involved in the peace movement. At this event, Col. Wright recounts some the courageous people profiled in her new book Dissent: Voices of Conscience, Government Insiders Speak Out Against the War in Iraq.

 From : - blip.tv (beta)
Produced for Earthjustice, a non-profit public interest law firm, this half-hour program focuses on experiments with genetically modified organisms (GMO s) in Hawai i, a place that has been named the GMO testing capitol of the world because of the more than 2,000 secret experimental field tests carried out over the past decade. Farmers, legal and medical experts and community activists share their perspective on the genetic engineering of crops and the patenting of life forms. In addition, they warn against the possible health impacts of GMOs, including allergic and immune system responses from exposure to biopharmaceutical crops both in humans and in Hawai i s endangered species and contamination of regular food crops such as papaya, taro, coffee and corn with genetically modified versions of those crops. Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians) recount their successful attempt to prevent the University of Hawai i patenting of taro, honored as an ancestor, and assert their right to the biodiversity of their lands which is at the heart of their ability to maintain health and survival. The video also addresses the impact of genetic engineering on food security and the world s future ability to feed itself.

 From : - blip.tv (beta)
The day after taping this week's "Gay USA," we learned of the death of Del Martin, a co-founder of the early lesbian group, the Daughters of Bilitis, in 1955. She married her spouse and sister activist Phyllis Lyon as soon as same-sex marriage became legal in California this year. They were two of the plaintiffs in the cases that won the right to marriage equality in California. Together, they launched the first lesbian newsletter, "The Ladder." Del Martin was 87. We will have much more on her passing on NEXT week's show. Del was one of the founding mothers of our movement and we all owe a debt of gratitude to her. This week IN THE NEWS: LGBT Democrats and issues at the Democratic National Convention are somewhat evident Joe Biden has a mixed but improving record on LGBT issues--and we could have done worse Republicans are set to oppose LGBT rights in McCain's party platform The Massachusetts rightwing wants to repeal the repeal of the 1913 law that blocked most out-of-state same-sex couples from marrying there Rachel Maddow is elevated to a prime-time slot on MSNBC The Chinese government locks up an AIDS activist during the Olympics We'll watch out gay Australian diver Matthew Mitcham win a gold medal at the Olympics and celebrate with his mom and boyfriend Lance Bass will be on "Dancing with the Stars." but with whom shall he dance. Gay USA, a weekly news-hour, offers comprehensive news and analysis by and about the LGBTQ community. The program features lively repartee between hosts Ann Northrop and Andy Humm, as well as interviews with special guests. Produced at Manhattan Neighborhood Network, Gay USA airs several times a week on "http://www.freespeech.org"Free Speech TV.
