'The Hills'' HEIDI MONTAG, 'American Idol's' JASON CASTRO, and 'House's' HUGH LAURIE!

The highlights are: A. Barack Obama's promises to Israel that he may have a difficult time honoring in the future. B. Barack Obama fires first salvo across John McCain's economic bow while only receiving harmless smoke and mirrors in return. Obama has successfully pinned the Bush administration's economic woes on McCain like a tail on the donkey. From our view, he wears it well. C. Country bracing for higher fuel and food prices as farmers fear modest crops this year. With Ben Bernanke signaling an end to rate cuts to stem inflation, the country is in for a rough ride.

Barack Obama, the nominee of the Democratic Party as of last night’s final primary contest, awakens this morning to the nightmare of a shotgun wedding with Hillary Clinton as his running mate. After clearing every hurdle to achieve what no person of color, man or woman has in the history of American politics, he now has to find a way to placate a bunch of self-centered losers from forcible glomming on to his success. Hillary Clinton failed to do the right thing, the stand up thing, and the proper thing by congratulating Barack Obama on winning the needed number of delegates to capture the nomination. Intentionally, she snatched the door open to hijack her way back into the White House by hanging on to Obama’s coattails. Somehow, she has deluded herself and the fringe element within her core support that the Obama camp gives a rat’s ass about what she wants. America is a country that loves a winner and shuns its losers. There is little room for disgruntled second place finishers.

As much as we hate rats and rat bastards, many times it is the only way to get to the truth. This is especially true when the government and the power that runs it is involved. Scott McClellan’s new book "What Happened" leveled the hammer big time on the Bush administration without mercy, leaving Karl Rove’s ass hanging in the wind. With John Conyers, heading up the House Judiciary Committee shoving a subpoena up Karl’s butt to force some conversation, conversation that Karl and the rest of the White House crew has been thumbing their noses at, maybe the tool needed to give Rove the tight screw he has coming. To date Karl has been playing the executive privileged game saying he and his “Boyz” are above it all. But this well timed book release is forcing the all the ugly and largely ignored stories of what was really going on behind the scenes that led this country to war at a time that has to have Karl “The Pillsbury Dough Boy” shitting bricks

Returning from any three-day weekend generally leaves some of us a little sluggish and lacking that creative spark. Fortunately for me, an anonymous comment left at the blog gave me the spark for today’s podcast. Our last podcast posting covered the possibility of worldwide despair due to global disasters along with food and fuel shortages topped off with domestic and international economic downturns that last beyond our comfort zones and levels of measurable tolerance. We also mentioned that because of said poor economic outlook and global catastrophes many would be lucky to have a backyard to have a backyard Bar BQ in this year. Based on most reports from airline hotels and restaurants many did just that and stayed close to home.

Okay, we know it’s Black Box theater Wednesday and we should have some local, affordable theater to recommend as per usual, but quit frankly, we did not see anything this week that would rate your attention. We did however get to some good stuff on the silver screen. The Ruins and Street Kings are our recommendations for an evening of kick ass action and scary spine chilling suspense. In Street Kings, Forest Whitaker as captain Jack Wander goes head to head with Keanu Reeves as detective Tom Ludlow, the kick ass detective being used by the captain to do the dirty work while he and the rest of his elite unit is raking in big dough from their own street drug sales. Whitaker is able to operate with immunity since he has the goods on all power figures in the Los Angeles political scene as well as the LAPD. This is a cool cop against cop, police corruption, internal affairs on the hunt for all the bad guys flick. This one is worth an afternoon in the theater just vegging to the action

Blackadder (1983 - 1989) Não conhecia Rowan Atkinson para além de seus papéis de comicidade suspeita, mas o cara não era apenas bom como Blackadder, ele era ótimo. Outro tipinho extraordinário era o, até então desconhecido por mim, Tony Robinson na pele do impagável Baldrick (aka I have a cunning plan). O seriado que entra fácil nas listas das melhores sitcoms de todos os tempos foi dividido em quatro temporadas, todas protagonizadas por um Blackadder em algum período da história: The Black Adder (1983): O período em que se passa é fins do século XV. Nem Fry, nem Laurie participaram desta, mas o pai-de-todo-mundo-cômico-inglês Peter Cook participa e isso não é pouca coisa. Ninguém conhece Rowan Atkinson até ver isto, é verdadeiramente genial. Blackadder II (1986): Se passa em tempos de Elizabeth I. Aqui Fry é um dos atores principais e Laurie é ator convidado. Miranda Richardson e e Rik "WOOF WOOF" Mayall também fazem parte da trupe e a série continua engraçadíssima. Blackadder The Third (1987): O tempo é do louco Rei George, Laurie interpreta seu filho e Fry é o ator convidado desta vez. Robbie Coltrane dá as caras e o seriado continua a gerar gargalhadas sinceras. Blackadder Goes Forth (1989): O período é da primeira guerra mundial, tanto Fry quanto Laurie são atores fixos. O conteúdo antibelicista e kick-your-ass em seu ápice, o final da temporada chega ser mesmo depressivo. Miranda Richardson e Rik Mayall voltam a fazer uma participação. Especial Blackadder: The Cavalier Years (1988): Especial para o Comic Relief em tempos de Cromwell , o atual Príncipe Charles (que é assumidamente fã de Fry & Laurie) é satirizado por Fry e Laurie faz figuração só para marcar presença. Especial Blackadder's Christmas Carol (1988): Especial de natal cínico em cima de Charles Dickens. Fry & Laurie, Jim Broadbent, Miriam Margolyes, Robbie Coltrane (já fantasiado de Hagrid) e Miranda Richardson participam. Especial Blackadder Back and Forth (1999): Esse especial soa como uma grande homenagem às temporadas passadas, Fry & Laurie se sobressaem como duas divas romanas loiras e de mini-saia durante o Grande Império. Colin Firth, Miranda Richardson e Kate Moss participam. Jeeves and Wooster (1990 - 1993) Este é um seriado de classe. Literalmente de classe. Lembro-me de ter lido em algum lugar que ao se mencionar a criação desse seriado falou-se o quão disparatada era a idéia de transpôr a obra de Wodehouse para a tv, mesmo para a televisão britânica, e em pleno anos 90. Por volta dos anos 20/30, a vida do milionário britânico Bertie Wooster gira em torno de arrumar os relacionamentos dos amigos e fazê-los casar - praticamente uma alcoviteira, mas quando é mencionado um casamento para si próprio entra em pânico, para consertar todos os seus planos mirabolantes que jamais dão certo existe seu brilhante mordomo Jeeves. Wodehouse é preciso ser lido, ouvido e visto, estranhamente há poucos grandes escritores cômicos no mundo e Wodehouse é um deles, seu estilo é de uma elegância incomparável, ele extrai das pequenas mazelas da vida um mundo. Mas tudo isso pode ser meio suspeito de minha parte, já que para me fazer feliz é só entregar em minhas mãos um livro escrito entre 1880 e 1930, mas é sinceramente delicioso e faz-me falta ficar longe de Jeeves e Wooster, seja na versão escrita ou na versão televisiva. Por ser fã de Wodehouse e desse seriado, Douglas Adams escolheu a dedo Fry & Laurie para encarnarem a voz do Guia e Arthur Dent, respectivamente, na versão cinematográfica de sua obra prima, mas quando Adams morreu (o fdp morreu demasiadamente jovem) e a produção mudou de rumo, apenas Fry permaneceu como a voz do Guia do Mochileiro das Galáxias, o que foi uma pena, pois Laurie nasceu para interpretar Arthur Dent, que pode ser considerado um descendente de Bertie Wooster enquanto que o Guia é a versão tecnológica de Jeeves. Um artigo que Laurie escreveu no fim dos anos 90 ficou famosíssimo em virtude das considerações feitas de como Wodehouse pôde salvar uma vida, no caso a dele, pois sofre de depressão (em compensação o House não faz muito bem para Laurie e teve que intensificar o seu tratamento). Fry é bipolar, assim como Peter Sellers e John Cleese, é quase que uma maldição todos os gênios cômicos da Inglaterra sofrerem de algum transtorno mental. A Bit of Fry and Laurie (1987-1995) Isso é uma verdadeira maravilha, por esse programa Fry & Laurie chegaram a ser comparados aos míticos Peter Cook & Dudley Moore nos anos 60, o que não é pouca coisa. A meta aqui ainda é a rebuscada linguagem cômica inglesa com seus jogos de semântica e sintaxe, como disse o próprio Laurie quando participou do SNL americano: "Não farei aqui piadas britânicas porque vocês demorarão dois dias para entender", afinal comicidade britânica é mais estilo de linguagem do que qualquer outra coisa, claro que o ato de derrubar a quarta parede é um dos métodos mais usados e que constroem os melhores sketchs do programa. Mas nada, nada suplanta um sketch em que Laurie encarna um tipo Clint Eastwood misturado a Steve McQueen (não por acaso ambos são ídolos seus), ele chega até a ficar fisicamente parecido, é claro que o seu formato de rosto, nariz e olhos ajudam mas o seu domínio da expressão facial é quase que assustador. Em compensação desfaleço porque Stephen Fry é o professor de linguística no melhor estilo sonho de consumo que sempre quis. Esses dois sketches podem mostrar o que os fazem diferentes e complementares, Fry é mais gênio e Laurie é mais ator, Fry é cérebro e Laurie é corpo. Enquanto Fry se sobressai onde se use exclusivamente a mente, Laurie é empurrado para uma genialidade que necessita da coordenação motora como a música e as suas qualidades de ator completo. Nota 1: Bloody hell. Assistir tudo isso me deu uma compulsão incrível por chá. E nem é por sempre ter achado Earl Grey o chá mais saboroso do mundo. Nota 2: É claro que existem mais infinitos trabalhos de Fry com Laurie espalhados por aí, seja no cinema ou principalmente na tv, mas esses 3 são os principais. Inclusive há o Afresco, uma das primeiras coisas pós Footlights Group. Footlights Group era uma turma de teatro de Cambridge onde Stephen Fry fora apresentado a Hugh Laurie por Emma Thompson, tal grupo é lendário por boa parte do Monty Python ter se conhecido neste mesmo grupo anos antes. Típico "feitos um para o outro". Para demonstrar a idolatria de Fry & Laurie pelo inigualável John Cleese, veja-os entregando o troféu "The Silver Dick" ao ídolo. Nota 3: Deixe-me exaltar um pouco a Stephen Fry... O cara é um típico cara renascentista, aquele cara que sabe tudo de tudo mas de forma alguma é afetado por isso, muito pelo contrário, ele é um desses casos raros que jamais usam o seu conhecimento com o intuito de ferir alguém, ele poderia cortar gargantas com uma reles frase, mas não o faz. E, convenhamos, é lindo ver pessoas assim por aí ainda, já que isso é considerado completamente fora de moda (bom, isso também pode ser chamado convenientemente de maturidade). Lembram daquela música do Zeca Baleiro chamada "Por onde andará Stephen Fry?", ela é baseada num famoso episódio de sua vida, onde Fry desapareceu da face da terra por alguns dias devido a uma crise bipolar, então fica a recomendação do excelente documentário conduzido por Fry: The Secret Life of the Manic Depressive. Bacana ver pessoas fazendo algo para "aclarar" um pouco com a sua própria experiência as mazelas dos diagnosticados com algum tipo de transtorno de personalidade ou de afetividade. O interessante é que durante minha "pesquisa" em torno de "A Bit of Fry and Laurie" pude notar alguns sketches em que ele brincava com a própria doença, onde Fry dava aquelas aulas frenéticas de sapiência e verborragia para de repente se deprimir. Nota despropositada do dia: Neste exato momento acaba de passar um bêbado na rua gritanto "Eu sou Escócia, Inglaterra não, eu sou Escócia! Freedom!", a revolução começa aqui, a independência da Escócia está nas mãos dos brasileiros agora. Feriado da Paixão é uma coisa linda, não?
