(June 3)America's best hope for gold in women's gymnastics this summer may rest on the shoulders of a girl who was born in the U-S-S-R.Since 2005 Nastia Luikin (LOO'-kihn) has won on the biggest national and international stages and has established herself as the world's best in a number of events.And now with the olympics right around the corner she is doing her best to make sure she doesn't falter on the biggest stage of them all.SOT LiukinI don't want to go in there and have anything to regret to think if I would have done this maybe this would have been better. So I'm just trying to do everything I can to be in the best shape when the right time comes.But her success may come from more than hard work.Her mother was a world champion at the club levels and her father took him two golds and a silver for the Soviets back in 19-88.Now he's her coach and she wouldn't have it any other way.SOT LiukinI definitely wouldn't have been here if someone else would have coached me.And what they have done together is come up with a routine on the uneven bars so difficult it's start value is a staggering seven-point-seven.All of which leaves the coach of the U-S team seeing gold.SOT KarolyiIf we combine with her 7-7 start she's relaistic chance for highest level of medal. This is one of the best bar routines in the world.Still she's looking for more than individual success at Beijing and says she'll do whatever to help the team as a whole.SOT LiukinWe're going into the olympic games as being the best team in the world and everyone is out to get us, that only makes us harder as we want to leave Beijing as the best team in the world again.But for all of her accomplishment and skills she also knows the bitter taste of defeat.A nagging ankle injury has had some critics wondering if she's past her prime and trying to do too much.She herself says even if doesn't achieve success in Beijing her career won't be a failure.SOT LiukinLife isn't all about the olympic games.Still she says she can't wait for those first few days in Beijing.SOT LiukinBeing able to say I was on the olympic team would mean everything and win a medal would mean so much more. ___ ___, The Associated Press. Her mother, Andrea, was a former olympic gymnast for West Germany. (June 2)Gymnast Jana Bieger (yah'-nah bee-gehr) is not yet 19-years-old and already she's trying to prove that her best isn't behind her.SOT Jana Bieger, Olympic hopefulI'm back now and I'm fully healthy and ready to go out there and compete and show my routines.Bieger was one of the rising stars in the U-S gymnastic fields.She excelled on the vault and the bars and in 2006 she won the silver at the World Championships in Denmark.It appeared then she was destined to be one of America's next Olympic darlings in a sport that garners some of the most attention.But an ankle injury slowed her down last year and she failed to even make the U-S team.SOT BeigerIt was definitely a hard setback for me. Especially because I did so well at the world's in 2006. But I'm just glad it happened last year instead of this year.Since then she says has tried to put the games out of her mind and instead focus on regaining her form and getting better at all of the venues. SOT BeigerEverything has to be day-to-day and step-by-step. You cannot be thinking about the Olympics right now.You had to really get your self confidence back as well as all of your routines back and you skills back that you need.Now, at 18, she's one of the older Olympic hopefuls practicing here in Texas where coach Martha Karolyi (kuh-roll-lee) runs her camp.Here Bieger is just another extremely talented and dedicated athlete trying to make the team.SOT KarolyiShe is a sturdy gymnast. She is also is one of the type who shows high difficulty skills and she worked hard to improve her form and presentation and so I think she is a legitimate contender.Those may be tough words to hear for an athlete who says she's been doing these moves since she was two and whose mother represented West Germany in three Olympic games.Her mother now serves as her coach but Beiger says she asks her about everything, except for one thing.SOT BiegerI haven't really asked her too many questions about the olympics yet. I haven't wanted to get myself up there. She'll have a chance to prove herself next month at the national championships.SOT BeigerI'm just getting real excited you know, just to finally reach my goal.Karolyi says she can see taking 10 even 12 athletes with her to Beijing and Bieger is counting on earning one of those spots. ___ ___, The Associated Press.
