Lcpl Shawn P. Hefner - Bringing Home a Hero

Nov. 19, 2009 - Shawn Patrick Hefner, 22, of Hico, Texas; assigned to 2nd Amphibious Assault Battalion, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; died Nov. 13 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was promoted to lance corporal on Nov. 1 and scheduled to return to his home base at Camp Lejeune, N.C., within a week. His flagged draped coffin was returned to Waco, TX, and was escorted by Patriot Guard Riders of North and Central Texas. The journey took the procession from Waco to his hometown of Hico, which is located in the heart of Texas. The procession drove through several small towns and communities. The highway was lined by citizens waving American flags as a sign of respect and gratitude for his sacrifice on their behalf. Many of the citizens place their hands over their hearts others saluted and many were overcome with emotion. As his procession arrived in Hico the entire town of 1300 citizens greeted their hero home. An equestrian group paraded down Main Street and made a circle around the funeral home. LCpl. Hefner was fun-loving and fearless, said his father, Patrick Hefner of Hico. He was an outdoorsman, said his father, a former Marine. He loved to fish and camp. If it could be done outdoors, that's where he wanted to be. LCpl. Hefner was born Dec. 4, 1986, in Kansas City, Mo., and moved with his family to Hico in 1991. He was a 2006 graduate of Hico High School. He joined the Marines in January 2008 and was deployed to Afghanistan in June. Almost immediately, he demonstrated his toughness, when he received a concussion after his Mine Resistant Ambush Protected vehicle was rocked by an explosion. His mother, Robin Hefner of Hico, had instructed her son to document his tour of duty with photographs. LCpl. Hefner faithfully carried out his mother's request even after that attack. They were carting him off in helicopters, and he was lying on his back taking pictures of his buddies up in front of him, his father said. In addition to his mother and father, LCpl. Hefner leaves behind a brother, a sister, a grandfather, and a grandmother. Fort Valley State Homecoming KickOff Concert

Fort Valley State Homecoming KickOff Concert

from recent posts - blip.tv (beta) on November 17, 2009

Hip Hop Encounter Media Group was invited to the Fort Valley State Homecoming Kickoff Concert. Odd thing was, this was to take place during the week, while classes were going on, at night so the recipe for disaster was obvious. The show was ok. The posted time was from 7-11 but the actual acts did not hit the state until 10pm. So you have restless students and faculty and a delayed show with no opening entertainment. I could hear the rumbles in the audience. I actually had the time to solicit the services of a photographer and videographer for future events so the night wasnt completely a bust. I thought this was going to be another one of those shows where they promote that a certain artist will be in the building. They stall and stall and then finally they say that the artist wont come out because the crowd wasnt hype enoughyou know the type. But to my surprise, just as I was about to get restless I get a call to come and interview one of my favorite up-and-coming groupsDem Show Stoppas. I like it when groups do something different, catch some slack for what they are doing and they STILL stick with it. These guys can dance and dancing used to be one of the truest and most self reflecting and expressive forms of communication in the Hip Hop Culture, so I commend these guys for sticking to what they do. The kids like it, and they are going full steam ahead with their movement. As long as you guys are selling and your fan base keeps growing, keep doing what youre doing.back to the show. Since Lady Shaq and Dem Show Stoppas were in the building, it was a good sign that there was actually going to be a show. Next came the actual promoterwow, what a surprise, late. Then came the artist, Yung LA, then Lil Ru, sprinkled with a few opening acts here and there. The show did not disappoint. Wish there had been something to do from 7-10 but I guess the performances made up for the lost time. Although, for this to be a place of higher education, I do take offense to some of the language that was aloud during this function...but who am I, I'm just a blogger. Til Next Time. One SpnDoctr
