From: Commitment or Holocaust by Prof. Dr. Ing. Libor Brom We ask ourselves who has caused the protracted holocaust in the world. Could it be that for evil to win only one thing is necessary good people who do nothing? Or that the hottest places in hell are reserved for those who, at the time of moral crisis, retain their neutrality? True, there are people in our world who have lost their moral perspective. Human knowledge has become vast and unmanageable. Astronomy has revealed a world beyond the imagination of man, physics a universe in the atom, biology a microcosm in every cell, physiology mysteries in every organ, and psychology dark secrets in every dream. Theology has crumbled, technology has exploded, economics has shattered, and politics has inflamed the world. The scientific specialist knows more and more about less and less, the philosophic generalist knows less and less about more and more, and both have put their blinders on to shut out any moral decision. The door is opened wide for a lasting holocaust. Knowledge has to be man's prime instrument for action and survival. Introductions that enumerate the institutions of learning where I have earned my degrees amuse me. They miss the most important school and the most influential teachers I have ever had my home and my parents. They were simple, hard-working people who had little time and very few luxuries to give. They did give me, however, their personal example and a firm springboard from which to jump into the world of confusion, terror, and war which followed. They professed one simple basic belief: Something is either good or bad, it is either decent or indecent, it serves either God or the devil, and most important they believed that it was my duty to find out what is right and what is wrong. This was what their education was all about. Yes, education is a stratified totality. First, education is facts. Second, it is concepts based upon these facts. Third, it is a decision based upon facts and concepts a personal decision as to what is right or wrong. Without this moral decision education is worthless. When we fail to make decisions, someone else will make them for us. In times of intimidation, revolution, and war this "someone'' is more apt to be the mobs in the streets who care little for facts or concepts. The result is tyranny. If freedom and democracy are to survive, it will take a miracle a miracle that only dedication and commitment can bring about. After the technological and intellectual revolutions, a moral revolution is necessary. When trapped in a world of indolence, incompetence and impotence, when challenged by ambivalence, arrogance and aggression, when you feel insignificant, you can and must do your duty! You know the needs of your family, your neighbor, your town, your state and your community. You have here a duty to perform. lt is not important that others are bad, lazy, and dishonest. It is important that you are good, diligent, and honest. It is not important that others lie, scheme, and destroy. It is important that you are hard at work to maintain our democracy, justice, and peace. There is no time to waste. The revolutionary forces shaking the earth have converged upon us, presenting us with difficult choices with a need for action, for ideas, for concerted and sustained commitment as a nation and as individuals. We must meet the challenge with the conviction of our beliefs. We must remember that as Americans by birth or by choice we are heirs to a permanent, continuing, liberating revolution. More Precious Than Pearls - One Man's Faith after the Holocaust A Film by Naftali Robert Friedman Faith after the Holocaust is a theme that is rarely touched upon in Holocaust-related documentaries, let alone examined deeply. This documentary film attempts to explore, in an engaging and compelling manner the complex emotional, intellectual and spiritual struggles faced by a survivor of Nazi concentration camps who immigrated to America after the war (via Northern Ireland and London). The film examines how he succeeded in achieving self-renewal as a human being and as a committed Jew, without forgetting the vivid, yet incomprehensibly painful memories of the past, obscuring them from those around him or suffering from paralyzing depression or anxiety. The film centers on the filmmaker's father, Alex Friedman, a Slovakian Jew and a scion of a rabbinical family who is an importer of cultured pearls from the Far East based in New York's 47th Street jewelry district. He is known, by his family, business colleagues and his community, for his warmth and friendly disposition as well as his myriad volunteer activities. We join Mr. Friedman as he returns to Central and Eastern Europe (with his wife, three of his four children and his 12 year-old grandson, Ami) to reclaim the past by visiting the personal landmarks of his childhood and the concentration camps he was interned at during the war. The film describes Mr. Friedman's ancestors and the heritage that that they passed down to him. On location in Svalyava (Ukraine), Kosice (Slovakia) and in various villages in the surrounding area, Mr. Friedman shares how the Nazis destroyed his entire family, his community in and its way of life. He recalls family and communal experiences growing up that will convey to the viewer a personal sense of what was lost in the war to one man, to the Jewish people and to the entire family of mankind. Again on location, Mr. Friedman describes in a poignant, but unsentimental, way his arrival at Auschwitz with his father and brother and his internment at Ebensee, a subcamp of Mathausen nestled in the scenic Austrian Alps near Salzburg. He managed to physically and spiritually survive the death camps and his faith in God and in humanity was restored an ocean away from the chaos at a Jewish Agency sponsored kibbutz-like "hachshara" farm for child refugees in Mislille, a quiet, peaceful town on the coast of Northern Ireland. After several months in Northern Ireland, Mr. Friedman accepted the offer of some of the madrichim (counselors) from the religious Zionist movement and joined them as they returned to their families in London. They helped him settle in London where he was taken in by a family as a boarder and where he found work in Hatton Gardens as an apprentice diamond cutter. It was there he first heard of the declaration of the newly established State of Israel and made his first donation to the newborn country from one of his first paychecks. After several years in London, Mr. Friedman eventually immigrated to the United States and moved to New York where he resides with his wife. 150 miles away at his house just outside Auschwitz concentration camp, where he lived with his wife and 4 children, Rudolf Höss awaited the arrival of the Slovaks. The plans for the new camp at Birkenau had changed; Soviet Prisoners of War were to be sent as forced labourers elsewhere. Höss now knew that Jews were central to the future of Auschwitz. And it was here in a remote corner of the site at Birkenau, 2 miles away from the main camp, that Höss and other members of the SS had found a location for new make-shift gas chambers. In this field stood a Polish cottage which would come to be known as the Little Red House or Bunker 1. Höss and his SS comrades saw this as a step forward in the killing process at Auschwitz. Two separate gas chambers were quickly improvised by bricking up the windows and door and creating two new entrances. Unlike in the crematorium in the main camp, people could be murdered here in relative secrecy. In this shabby cottage tens of thousands of people would be murdered. The manner of killing remained the same. Jews would be told they were to take a shower, they would be locked in the room, and Zyklon B thrown in through a hatch in the wall. Within weeks, the Nazis had converted another nearby cottage—the Little White House - in just the same way. Slovakian Jews arrived at the railway stop 2 miles from the gas chambers on the 29th April 1942—and faced 'selection' by the SS. This was the first of hundreds of SS selections to be held over the next 30 months. As Allied and Soviet troops moved across Europe in a series of offensives against Nazi Germany, they encountered concentration camps, mass graves, and numerous other sites of Nazi crimes. American soldiers witnessed evidence of the Holocaust and Nazi atrocities as they marched into the interior of Germany, liberating the major concentration camps such as Buchenwald, Dachau, and Mauthausen as well as hundreds of subcamps, including Ohrdruf (a subcamp of Buchenwald). Though the liberation of Nazi camps was not a primary objective of the Allied military campaign, U.S, British, Canadian, and Soviet troops freed prisoners from their SS guards, provided them with food and badly needed medical support, and collected evidence for war crimes trials. Robert Patton, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, was with the 65th Infantry Division the day after the liberation of Mauthausen by the 11th Armored Division.
