To his surprise, though, just prior to meeting the promotion board, senior officers at the USAF Academy conspired to ensure that his promotion would be denied. The reason? Racism. Rumor has it that certain white senior officers and members of Hofflers squadron thought that his squadrons command element was "too Black" and were of the opinion that Blacks should be "kept in their place." As a result, racist forces within the USAF Academy targeted Hoffler with one goal in mind: to deny him promotion to colonel. A distinguished officer, Hoffler followed military protocol and pursued justice through appropriate channels, but to no avail. In the pages of this explosive new book, Hoffler blows the lid off the shameful secret of the USAF Academys history of racism and clearly illustrates why the USAF Academy was known by some Black airmen stationed there as "the plantation."
