Both cars darted down a side street as Torres crumples onto the road.The minute-long video then shows several cars passing Torres as a few people stare from the sidewalk. Several people did call 911 within a minute of the accident while others approached the victim and most stayed put until an officer responding to an unrelated call arrives on the scene.Torres is in critical condition in Hartford Hospital. Police just released this surveillance video in hopes of generating new leads. It shows Angel Torres walking in the street after buying milk at a local grocery store. Seconds later, he's struck by a dark Honda that was chasing a tan Toyota. Both cars darted down a side street as Torres crumples onto the road. The minute-long video then shows several cars passing Torres as a few people stare from the sidewalk. Some approached the victim but most stayed put until an officer responding to an unrelated call arrives on the scene. The victim remains in critical condition in Hartford Hospital. Authorities say he's paralyzed. Alcuni turisti americani che hanno assistito alla scena hanno riferito che le due vittime stavano attraversando la strada sulle strisce pedonali e che l'automobilista correva come un pazzo . Vernarelli, 32enne, figlio di Roberto, ufficiale della polizia municipale di Roma, è stato fermato con l'accusa di omicidio colposo e omissione di soccorso. Nel sangue aveva un tasso di alcol quattro volte e mezzo superiore al limite previsto dalla legge, ma il giudice gli ha concesso gli arresti domiciliari. «È stato terribile. L'auto ha colpito la prima ragazza, poi ha trascinato la seconda per diversi metri. Il conducente stava per fermarsi, ma è fuggito. Prima, però, forse a bordo c'era un passeggero: è sceso e si è allontanato a piedi». Ricorda quelle scene sbarrando ancora gli occhi Manuel Riuz, 24 anni, californiano, appassionato di cinema con in tasca un titolo da dottore del grande schermo. Ieri è ripartito per gli States. Il giorno prima del decollo del suo aereo, però, la ruota degli eventi lo ha collocato a due passi dalla tragedia, vicino alle due ragazze investite e uccise l'altra notte sul Lungotevere degli Altoviti dalla Mercedes guidata da un trentaduenne ubriaco, davanti a Castel Sant'Angelo. Manuel aggiunge alla brutta scena un particolare in più: la presenza di un passeggero a bordo della Mercedes Classe B di Friedrich Vernarelli. «Ho negli occhi questa immagine: una persona seduta al lato passeggero che scende dall'auto e si allontana a piedi. Certo, la nostra attenzione era attirata da altro: mio fratello, i miei amici ed io ci siamo preoccupati delle ragazze e abbiamo dato subito l'allarme». Alla polizia municipale non risulta la presenza di un passeggero a bordo della vettura pirata: è esclusa sia dai vigili del XVII Gruppo, quelli che materialmente hanno fermato l'ubriaco, sia a quelli del I Gruppo, competenti per territorio in quel tratto di Lungotevere. «E comunque - dicono - la presenza di un passeggero non aggiunge né toglie niente alla resposabilità di chi guidava la Mercedes». C'e' poco da dire e' una tragedia: due ragazze morte e unvita distrutta . Cosi' Roberto Vernarelli, padre di Friedrich, il giovane che stanotte ha investito e ucciso due ragazze irlandesi a Roma, commenta quanto accaduto in un'intervista rilasciata ad Agr. Il fatto che abbia bevuto - dice Vernarelli - e' una cosa strana perche' lui non beve. E' un classico bamboccione che sta a casa in famiglia, quello che esce una volta ogni morte di Papa...coincidenza e' uscito proprio ieri da qualche parte con qualcuno, non lo so... . Il figlio, afferma Vernarelli, non gli ha ancora raccontato nulla: lui non si ricorda niente, e' distrutto e piange...Sa benissimo che quando fa un incidente si deve fermare, perche' e' stupido scappare, primo o poi ti beccano, ando' vai? Per cui tanto vale fermarsi. Io ho visto - aggiunge il padre del ragazzo - un filmato della 6, Italia 6, che c'e' un testimone, un ragazzo americano che lo ha visto fermarsi dopo l'incidente, e' risalito e poi se ne andato. Si vede che e' sceso, si e' reso conto e ha perso la testa. La spiegazione logica e' questa e suffragata da questa testimonianza . Al cronista che gli chiede se ha visto il video che gira sul web, in cui Friedrich guida senza le mani sul volante, Vernarelli risponde: queste sono cose che comunque tutti i ragazzi...bisogna vedere quando l'ha fatto, magari a vent'anni uno queste cose le fa, per giocare. Non lo so . Two Irish women were killed in a hit-and-run incident in Rome this morning. The women, understood to be aged 28 and 29, were knocked down by a car on the Lungotevere Altoviti near Castel Sant'Angelo in the centre of the Italian capital at around 3.00am as they returned home from a night out celebrating St Patrick's Day. It is understood they were knocked down by a Mercedes as they used a pedestrian crossing. According to local police, a man (32) who tried to flee was arrested on suspicion of manslaughter and drink-driving. One of the victims was reportedly thrown into the air while the other was dragged 60 metres by the speeding car. The driver sped away from the scene but crashed into a number of parked cars and rubbish bins a few kilometres away and was arrested. La Repubblica reported that the man, who is the son of a former Rome police chief, was four and a half times over the legal alcohol limit.
