A view inside the world of someone with high-functioning autism ... The very first episode! Make sure your volume is turned right up! (** If you have an ASD, you might want to have your finger on the volume control in case you find it too overwhelming **) This episode is about hyperacusis - hyperacusis is a hearing impairment, it means that you hear things differently to other people. The way I process sounds is totally different to the way a neuro-typical (or non-autistic) person experiences sound. To me, I perceive sounds very loudly, everything is magnified, someone speaking quietly will sound as though they are shouting. Things become blurred and sounds mix together. I cannot filter sounds, things all merge together, the background sound and the foreground sound... it is a very difficult way to experience the sense of sound.
