This bike safety film, set in the early sixties suburbia, brings back memories for those who grew up with Schwinn bicycles. The film goes over the basic rules of bike maintenance, proper equipment, and the rules for riding on the roads along side traffic. In the (not so true) world of this film, kids spend hours on bike maintenance, respect the rules of the road, and always yield to pedestrians. But this is a reflection of the conservative mentality in the 1960s, and thus provides historical insight. Bicycle Today, Automobile Tomorrow is a no-nonsense film that provides timeless tips on safe riding.

This vintage vocational training film promoted a crucial vocation that was necessary for the war effort: welding. Methods shown include flat and overhead welding and cutting, electric resistance, arc welding, shielded arc, metal table, and carbon rod. Spot welding and stick welding are also shown. The film explains what types of jobs are out there for welders, and what physical and school requirements are needed. It discusses production jobs, work in the steel or automotive industries, air craft building, and bridge and pipeline work. While oxy-acetylene equipment is now considered obsolete, the methods shown here are not much different from modern ones, and a hobbyist or someone interested in welding as a career will find much of interest in this informative film.

The libertarian magazine Reason is out with a list of the worst nanny states. Seattle is number two, right behind Chicago. Apparently Chicago's attempted Foie Gras ban pushed them to the top. Do you think Seattle does too much to limit personal behavior? Is the city a nagging nanny? Or do you find the nanny state charge wrong headed. Do you agree with policies aimed at improving health and safety? Maybe you feel like you need a strong nanny sometimes? The Reason Magazine survey of nanny cities ranked them by gambling; number of prostitutes per capita; smoking restrictions; alcohol restrictions; gun and drug laws. Las Vegas is at the opposite end of permissiveness from Seattle. Should Seattle have a little more Vegas? Or should what happens in Vegas, stay in Vegas?

Symbols are important, but they don't fully reflect all the hard work that goes into a peace process. Beyond doves and ribbons, peace is a demanding job for over 100,000 United Nations Peacekeepers. The first UN peacekeeping mission hails back to 1948. UN military observers were deployed to monitor the Armistice Agreement b/w Israel and its Arab neighbors. Since then, the Blue Helmets have been a driving force behind protecting civilians and resolving conflicts around the world. Guatemala, Namibia, Cambodia-- UN Peacekeepers go to places others simply can't or won't go. This is what peace really is. It's 60 years of creating chances for peace to blossom. 60 years of overseeing elections and disarming ex-combatants. 60 years of proving that peace, like war, must be waged.
