In this episode Scott and Ben record in person! We re also joined by Geekin host Randy McKinney. News involved secret Warner/DC meetings, a possibly abstract Robocop, King Arthur trading in his sword for a gun, and much more. Trailers this week were for Watchmen, The Spirit, Terminator: Salvation, and the new Iron Man cartoon series. Finally we review Hellboy 2: The Golden Army. This episode was apparently having some sort of technical difficulties that couldn t be helped. There is a constant static buzz from about 5mins in until the end. It only gets really bad twice and luckily they are only in 30-60sec patches. If you can make your way through it, this was a really fun episode. Stay tuned for our Dark Knight review very soon!

Filed under: Animation, RumorMonger, Fandom Those manatees really know how to keep themselves busy. In one of the more irreverent news items of the day, Family Guy creator Seth McFarlane -- whose voice work is currently on display in Hellboy II: The Golden Army -- has told TV Week that he hopes to get a Family Guy movie off the ground in a year or so. The announcement was first picked up by Ain't It Cool News, where most commenters seem fairly lukewarm about the idea. Honestly, it's hard not to agree with them. Family Guy already has two feature length titles out on DVD, and neither one really raised the bar for the show or even played better than a decent episode. At least The Simpsons movie had a plot that made sense for ninety minutes. Family Guy, with its incessant randomness, generally works as a series of distractions. In other words, not the sort of thing that really needs to get expanded beyond the half hour structure. Then again, the show has its devout base, which eagerly anticipates each sloppily constructed gag like clockwork, so maybe the new film project is good business sense. Either way, the South Park two-parter that took Family Guy to task remains far more entertaining (and insightful) than Family Guy's entire six-season run. Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

Discuss: Should 'Hellboy II' Serve as Del Toro's Audition Tape?Discuss: Should 'Hellboy II' Serve as Del Toro's Audition Tape?

Filed under: Action, Classics, Drama, Foreign Language, Horror, Casting, New Releases, New Line, Celebrities and Controversy, Fandom, New in Theaters, Family Films, Comic/Superhero/Geek "While waiting in line for the screening of Hellboy II: The Golden Army, I overhead someone say that Guillermo del Toro's latest is being seen as his audition tape for The Hobbit," observed Jonathan Pacheco in his review for The House Next Door. Of course, Del Toro already had the directing gigs for the two Hobbit films before Hellboy II hit theaters, but that won't stop audiences from evaluating the current parade of fairies, demons and evil elves with Del Toro's Middle-Earth-to-be in mind. Needless to say, it's a narrow perspective. It would make more sense to expect that these upcoming features will negotiate between the gothic horror of Pan's Labryinth and the blockbuster approach of Hellboy II. In the latter work, it's clear that Del Toro has more interest in placing these loony supernatural beings in relatively conventional action sequences, allowing the specificity of the characters to create a sense of ingenuity. Pan's Labryinth, on the other hand, offers a single package of storytelling: The art direction, special effects and even the violence directly relate to the drama. The best case scenario for the Hobbit films would be a happy medium: Glorious visuals that reflect Tolkien's deeply involving mythology.Continue reading Discuss: Should 'Hellboy II' Serve as Del Toro's Audition Tape? CinemaNet - CinemaNET No.237 - Hellboy II y Hancock, dos apuestas fuertes para este veranoCinemaNet - CinemaNET No.237 - Hellboy II y Hancock, dos apuestas fuertes para este verano
from FrecuenciaCero
July 15, 2008

(July 14)A hot weekend for 'Hellboy II: The Golden Army.' The devilish Universal sequel - starring Ron Perlman - battled to the top of the box office. Studio estimates show the tale of the red-skinned devil fighting for the good guys debuted with 35-point-nine million dollars. The opening of 'Hellboy II' - directed by Guillermo del Toro - is more than double that of the original film. Universal decided to do a sequel after the first 'Hellboy' really caught fire on DVD.'Hellboy' pushed 'Hancock' to second place. The Will Smith superhero tale took in another 33-million. That raises its domestic total to 165 million dollars.Opening third is 'Journey to the Center of the Earth,' starring Brendan Fraser. The film is a modern twist on the Jules Verne classic about a trip to the planet's core - shot in digital 3-D. It took in 20-point-6-million dollars. The animated 'Wall-E' continued to clean up at number 4. The sci-fi story of a lonely robot earned another 18-and-a-half million dollars. And 'Wanted,' the assassination thriller starring Angelina Jolie, James McAvoy and Morgan Freeman - rounds out the top five, pulling in an additional 11-point six million dollars. Weekend Box Office: 'Hellboy' Beats 'Hancock'; Eddie Murphy Relives 'Pluto Nash'Weekend Box Office: 'Hellboy' Beats 'Hancock'; Eddie Murphy Relives 'Pluto Nash'
from Cinematical
July 14, 2008

Filed under: New Releases, Box Office I guess Eddie Murphy knew something we didn't. I don't know how much the star showing up for the premiere of his own movie would have helped matters, but it couldn't have hurt. The poorly (though not abysmally) reviewed Meet Dave somehow turned out to be Murphy's worst debut weekend grosser since 2002's legendarily bad The Adventures of Pluto Nash, and before that 1998's Holy Man. Actually, Meet Dave's $5.3 million take just barely edged out Holy Man's opening. And that's pretty impressive. I probably shouldn't be too surprised, since even I didn't bother watching the thing, and I see just about everything. Bigger and better-looking films have at the moment cornered every demographic that Dave could have aimed for. Better news for Hellboy II: The Golden Army, whose $35.9 million bow won't set any records this summer, but is a solid improvement on Hellboy's $23 million opening (it would go on to gross $60 million) and good enough for first. On the other hand, Journey to the Center of the Earth's $20.6 million, 3rd place finish has to be considered a mixed success. $11.7 million of that came from the film's 857 3-D locations (significantly less than a third of its total sites). That's not surprising, considering how much the movie was marketed as a 3-D affair; I wonder how many people went in thinking they were going to watch it in 3-D and went home disappointed. (Not receiving a pair of 3-D glasses would have tipped them off, I suppose.) Nothing remarkable going on among the holdovers this week. Hancock dropped 47% in its second weekend and is sitting pretty with a $165 million cume (though recall that it was released two Tuesdays ago). Wall-E lost another 42% and, at $162.7 million after three weeks, it's tracking behind The Incredibles and Finding Nemo, but ahead of every other Pixar offering. The full top 10 after the jump!Continue reading Weekend Box Office: 'Hellboy' Beats 'Hancock'; Eddie Murphy Relives 'Pluto Nash' Permalink | Email this | Comments

Part 11 of 12: On his love of idiosyncrasy... "The only moral crossroads, really, is when it really happens. You cannot be an armchair moralist. You can be a film purist only if you have gone through the grinder. You can't be a film purist from the comfort of your home. It's the same thing as saying, "I never sold out." How would you know if no-one has ever tried to buy you? In that sense, the degree to which you reaffirm your personality is important. That was one of the reasons I didn't do [the third Harry Potter film] - because the books I loved - but the first two movies didn't connect with me. Alfonso went in and did what remains my favourite of the movies so far. I think Hellboy II is going to be an interesting thing because it is infinitely more idiosyncratic than the first. Hellboy is kind-of a klutz, and I love him for that. What is the everyday life of one of these super-powerful guys? Does he have to pick his socks? Who rinses the ball-sweat from the Batsuit? Those are aspects that intrigue me to a point!" Author: rafael28 Keywords: Guillermo del Toro Hellboy II Pan's Labyrinth Rotten Tomatoes Added: July 14, 2008

In 2004, visionary writer/director GUILLERMO DEL TORO brought MIKE MIGNOLA's comic-book hero Hellboy (RON PERLMAN of Blade II, Alien: Resurrection) to the screen. The overly muscled occult detective, complete with horns, tail and hard-boiled attitude, was an everyman who'd become a favorite of fanboys around the world, including del Toro. Del Toro introduced the reluctant crimefighter to a global audience with the feature Hellboy, and his film's wit, action and ingenious practical effects launched a critical and commercial hit for comic lovers and general audiences alike. The filmmaker's epic odyssey continues with the action-thriller Hellboy II: The Golden Army, the feature follow- up to his 2006 triple Oscar®-winning masterpiece, Pan's Labyrinth. Bringing bigger muscle, badder weapons, multitudes of monsters and a little domestic conflict at home, our favorite kitten- loving red hero is back. And this time, he kicks even more evil ass. An aquatic empath who is almost 150 years old, the brilliant Abe Sapien has the psychogenic power to read objects and know their past or the future. The consummate gentleman, Abe's inordinate kindness is matched only by his passion for delectable, rotten eggs. The Ichthyo Sapien must use an Aqua-Lung to provide oxygen to his body when outside water and holds a very special place in his heart for the mysterious Princess Nuala who shares some of his gifts and his sense of justice. Death) was born on May 24, 1960, in Indianapolis, Indiana, and grew up in the city's northeast side. After attending Bishop Chatard High School, he headed to Ball State University and graduated in 1982 with a bachelor's degree in telecommunications and a minor in theater. While at Ball State, Jones joined a troupe called Mime Over Matter. The summer after graduation, he worked as a mime at Kings Island theme park in Cincinnati, Ohio. He has also worked as a contortionist. After a hitch in theater in Indiana, Jones moved to Los Angeles in 1985. Since then, he has acted in more than 30 films, many television series (including the awardwinning Buffy the Vampire Slayer—his episode "Hush" received two Emmy nominations), more than 90 commercials, and music videos with the likes of Madonna, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Marilyn Manson. His empathetic performance as Abe Sapien in director Guillermo del Toro 's Hellboy raised his profile with both audiences and critics in 2004. A year later, del Toro gave him the title role in his career-defining fantasy/horror film, El Laberinto del Fauno (Pan's Labyrinth). In addition to portraying Pan, Jones took on the role of The Pale Man, a gruesome creature with a penchant for eating children. Working under heavy prosthetics for both characters, he chose to learn and speak their dialogue in archaic Spanish. Pan's Labyrinth was nominated for six Oscars® and won three, including Best Makeup. 2005 proved to be a busy year for Jones. In addition to starring in Pan's Labyrinth, he performed in Doom, The Benchwarmers and M. Night Shyamalan's Lady in the Water. In 2006, he donned the suit of the Silver Surfer and created another iconic screen character in the 2007 box-office blockbuster 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer Author: blacktreemedia Keywords: hellboy filmmaker reel interview trailer Guillermo Del Toro pans labryinth director doug jones abe sapien Added: July 12, 2008
