(June 30)Federal transportation investigators say Sunday's deadly collision of two medical helicopters is part of a disturbing trend. The chairman of the National Transportation Safety Board says there have been eight accidents involving medical choppers since the beginning of this year. 16 people have died, including the six killed in Sunday's incident.(SOT: MARK ROSENKER/NTSB)(12:49;23) AND THAT'S WHY WE'RE GOING TO WORK VERY VERY HARD TO UNDERSTAND EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED HERE. DETERMINE THE PROBABLE CAUSE AND MAKE RECOMMENDATIONS TO KEEP IT FROM HAPPENING AGAIN.The two choppers ran into each other as they were approaching Flagstaff Medical Center in Arizona. All six who died were on the helicopters. A nurse who was on one of the choppers is in critical condition. Two emergency workers on the ground were hurt by an explosion after the choppers crashed.There are no flight controllers at the airport. Last July, two news choppers crashed into each other in Phoenix, killing four people on board the two aircraft. The N-T-S-B says it will look into similarities between that crash and Sunday's. Every Thursday and Sunday, members of the Cape Ann RC Model Club gather at a field tucked behind Long Hill Orchard in West Newbury to fly remote-controlled planes, helicopters and jets. The members range in age, from children learning to fly with their parents to retired people with newly-discovered free time, and in experience, from novices to skilled pilots who compete in air shows. Regardless of ability or age, they all share a passion for aviation and learning new tricks. Cody Wojcik, who has been flying for nine years and competing in shows for five, enjoys flying because "there's always something new to learn. I never get bored of it."
