Is the Best 'Tempest' On the Horizon?!
from Cinematical October 09, 2008
Filed under: Classics, Drama, Casting News like this is what I wait for when writing about movie news -- announcements that merge so many good things that you can't help but get the tingle of excitement. The Hollywood Reporter posts that Julie Taymor is taking on William Shakespeare yet again, and with one starry-eyed and stellar cast. Strike that ... THE stellar cast. This time around, we get The Tempest, but with a spin -- there's a bit of gender bending. Prospero, the deposed Duke of Milan who became a sorcerer, is getting a sex change so that Helen Mirren can play the part. The lovely Mirren will be joined by Jeremy Irons, who will play Prospera's brother Alonso, Djimon Hounsou, who will tackle Caliban, Russell Brand as the jester Trinculo, Alfred Molina, who will be the drunken Stephano, Ben Wishaw as the spirit Ariel, and Felicity Jones as Prospera's daughter, Miranda. Oh, but that's not all -- Geoffrey Rush is in negotiations to play Prospera's ol' ally and adviser, Gonzalo. Since things are being changed up a bit, here's how THR describes it: "Shakespeare's play mixes romance with fraternal politics and the supernatural. As revised for the screen, it will center around Prospera, her daughter Miranda (Jones) and a shipwrecked crew full of Prospera's enemies." After seeing Taymor's Titus, I never dreamed another Shakespeare adaptation could compare, until now. I say this having seen every single one of Will's plays performed at least once, and thinking that Patrick Stewart's Prospero was practically untouchable. But now, with this cast? I'm in love. But still, Taymor is changing things up, so sound off below: Taymor, gender-bending, and The Tempest -- yay or nay? Permalink | Email this | Comments

Don lent his voice to movie trailers like the Simpons Movie, Fatal Attraction, Batman Returns, Terminator and T2. Hasta la vista Don! Amanda Steinstein joins us once again to share with us life after being transformed by Stacy London and Clinton Kelley on the popular TLC realty tv show What Not to Wear. It looks like the intervention worked because she doesn t look bad. In fact, she looks great. Guess what? We re announcing the air date for the special episode, and you re all invited to come watch the show with us that night! Time and location to be announced but we are really looking forward to sharing this fun and exciting experience with you all. Whoop! Helen Mirren confesses to her love of cocaine in the 80s. It turns out the Oscar winning actress liked to snort a few rails until she found out that the men who sold cocaine were Nazi drug barons. The 63-year-old, who won an Academy Award for her role in The Queen, was quoted by GQ magazine as saying she used to dabble in marijuana and cocaine when she was younger. I loved coke. I never did a lot, just a little bit at parties, but what ended it for me was when they caught (Nazi war criminal) Klaus Barbie, the Butcher of Lyon, in the early 80s. He was hiding in South America and living off the proceeds of being a cocaine baron. Everyone wants to know who the oh so cute iPhone girl is. The iPhone girl turns out to be a factory worker who tested the photo component on the iPhone. She was suppose to delete the photo but she didn t on a few of them. Amanda is finally taking our advice and will go for a jump in the lake. On September 20, 2008 she will join people from all around the world to clean up our waters during International Cleanup Day. The Project Aware Foundation spearheads global underwater cleanups and addresses the devastating impact of marine debris on the aquatic environment. We can t wait to find out what Amanda will find at the bottom of Lake Michigan. Can we now blame our bad behavior on our genes? Scientists have discovered that men who have certain alleles, or members of a pair or series of different forms of a gene, are less likely to be in happy or monogamous relationship. About 40% of men have one or two of the alleles which puts them at risk for marital discord or divorce. And if you have two of the alleles you are at a greater risk than if you have just one. If you have none of these alleles, then you re probably already in a relationship. Why is that all the good alleles are already taken? What the heck is up with Sarah Palin? We are still confused why McCain chose this unlikely running mate. Some people are saying that her daughter being pregnant should be off limits in this campaign. Now, we would agree with them if it weren t for the fact that she parades her kids around as some testament to why she is a good leader and person. She opened the door to the argument. If she can t teach her own kids her style of morality then how is she going to be any kind of moral leader to the nation? In a world without the Feast of Fools, would people still own iPods? Fan Rant: 'The Deal' is Better Than 'The Queen'
from Cinematical August 07, 2008
Filed under: Comedy, Drama, Independent, Casting, Deals, New Releases, Celebrities and Controversy, Scripts, Home Entertainment, Politics, Columns, Fan Rant When Stephen Frears' The Queen came out in 2006, all the buzz emphasized Helen Mirren's icy performance as London's reclusive royal highness. The ubiquitous praise lead to her Oscar win, but it overwhelmed recognition of the movie's secret weapon: Michael Sheen as Tony Blair, quietly pressuring his Majesty to face the public in the wake of Princess Diana's untimely demise. There's a reason why Sheen conveyed the nuances of Blair's role in the event, which transpired a mere three months after the Prime Minister rose to power -- he had practice. The Deal, a fantastic made-for-TV movie Frears directed in 2003, tracked Blair's cunning (and morally questionable) instincts in the years leading up to his position at the top of the Labor Party. Sheen played Blair in The Deal first, and it's both a superior performance and a superior film. Whereas The Queen had a tabloid hook and only tangentially explored the deeper political ramifications of a reclusive national leader, The Deal delves into precisely how Blair managed to emerge at the top of British politics with a series of calculated maneuvers. Political drama at its finest, The Deal hit DVD in the United States last month, where it has been touted as "the prequel to The Queen." That's not quite fair; The Queen is the sequel to The Deal, and the two movies ought to be seen as a single, wholly fascinating package depicting British politics in the 1990s.Continue reading Fan Rant: 'The Deal' is Better Than 'The Queen' Permalink | Email this | Comments

Beach Walk 669 - Bikini Madness!
from Beach Walks with Rox July 30, 2008
iPod | 4:38 | To Embed or Email: click on "Menu." Seems every year or so I get in the mood for a bikini show. You realize here in Hawaii they are common - on all ages and all sizes. But reading about this research in Belgium and by Carnegie Mello, I realize they are a hot topic for the study of neuroeconomics. Bottom line: men get stupid in front of bikini-wearing women, and spend more money on things they don't necessarily want. One way to break that is to desensitize, to present bikinis in normal context (not the usual seductive poses.) Helen Mirren is a role model for many and at 62 still wears a bikini. And to the women who won't wear one? Other side of same coin! Who cares how you look? Swimming and sunning with a bare tummy sure feels awful nice. 20 years ago, when I arguably had a much "better" body, I would not have filmed this. Today, who cares? National Treasure 2
from ChannelFlip Film June 25, 2008
The first National Treasure was surprisingly delightful. Funny, action packed and genuinely engaging. Does the sequel live up to its hype? You'll have to watch my review to find out. Oh, and watch out for Nicolas Cage's 'British' accent.

Cinema Society: The Savages
from The Santa Barbara International Film Festival Podcasting Station November 13, 2007
The last thing the two Savage siblings ever wanted to do was look back at their difficult family history. Having wriggled their way out from beneath their father’s domineering thumb, they are now firmly cocooned in their own complicated lives. Wendy is a struggling East Village playwright, AKA a temp who spends her days applying for grants, stealing office supplies and dating her very married neighbor. Jon is a neurotic college professor writing books on obscure subjects in Buffalo. Then comes the call that informs them that the father they have long feared and avoided, Lenny Savage, is slowly being consumed by dementia and they are the only ones that can help. Now, as they put their already arrested lives on hold, Wendy and Jon are forced to live together under one roof for the first time since childhood, rediscovering the eccentricities that drove each other crazy. Faced with complete upheaval and battling over how to handle their father’s final days, they are confronted with what adulthood, family and, most surprisingly, each other are really about. Join Roger as he interviews writer/director Tamara Jenkins and actor Laura Linney about what it was like to work on this wonderful film. One technical note - the lighting at the Riviera Theater continues to be a problem so the picture is dark and grainy. (CLICK ON THE PICTURE BELOW TO START VIDEO) Share This

FilmCrunch 049: The Queen DVD Review
from FilmCrunch May 07, 2007
Veronica Santiago and Neil Estep review the DVD release of The Queen in this episode of FilmCrunch: A revealing, witty portrait of the British royal family in crisis immediately following the death of Princess Diana. The setting for this fictional account of real events is no less than the private chambers of the Royal Family and the British government in the wake of the sudden death of Princess Diana in August of 1997. In the immediate aftermath of the Princess's passing, the tightly contained, tradition-bound world of the Queen of England clashes with the slick modernity of the country's brand new, image-conscious Prime Minister, Tony Blair. The result is an intimate, yet thematically epic, battle between private and public, responsibility and emotion, custom and action - as a grieving nation waits to see what its leaders will do.
