Co-Star Showdown: Collette + Hoffman v. Hunt + Schreiber
from Cinematical October 03, 2008
In one corner, we have Toni Collette and Philip Seymour Hoffman (doesn't that sound good already?). The Hollywood Reporter posts that PSH has just signed his voice up to star opposite Collette in Mary and Max, a claymation project from Down Under. Sort of like a claymation version of Love Letters, the film focuses on two penpals who foster a friendship over 20 years while one lives in Australia and the other in the US. I don't know if this is a tale of classic pen to paper, or something a little more modern with late-night Internet session while one goes to bed and the other rises. To make things even more interesting -- it's the feature debut for Harvie Krumpet Oscar winners Adam Elliot and Melanie Coombs. In the other corner, there's one of the strangest couplings I've read in a while -- Helen Hunt and Liev Schreiber. Variety reports the pair are starring in a new drama called Every Day. What's weird -- they're playing a "couple whose marriage is strained to the breaking point." Nip/Tuck's Richard Levine will make his feature directorial debut with the film, which starts production in New York this month. I don't know why, but this pairing just seems really strange. They're not far off in age, so who knows? Weigh in below: Which pair do you want to see more?Filed under: Animation, Comedy, Drama, Casting Permalink | Email this | Comments

Cinematical Seven: Actors Who Could Play Siblings, etc.
from Cinematical July 22, 2008
Filed under: Fandom, Cinematical Seven, Nicole Kidman Occasionally Hollywood cobbles together random members of the A-list to play family members on film, even if their genes obviously come from opposite ends of the earth. If the actors are good enough or if the chemistry is there, sometimes the combo can work, such as Ethan Hawke and Philip Seymour Hoffman as brothers in Before the Devil Knows You're Dead or Colin Farrell and Ewan McGregor in Cassandra's Dream. Other times, it stretches credibility, such as Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson and Jason Schwartzman in The Darjeeling Limited. My all-time favorite oddball casting is in Sidney Lumet's Family Business (1989), with Sean Connery, Dustin Hoffman and Matthew Broderick playing grandfather, father and son. (Huh?) At the same time, there are actor combos out there who just scream to be paired up in a family capacity. Remember Julia Roberts and Kyra Sedgwick in Something to Talk About? Well, neither do I, but that pairing was perfect. Here are a few others that could work: 1. Helen Hunt & Leelee Sobieski They're so similar it's spooky, from their hair and foreheads, right down to the tonal quality of their voices. Anybody check the hospital records for mixed-up babies? (Helen is about 20 years older.) Not too long ago, both careers hit a peak: Helen won an Oscar while Leelee was working with Stanley Kubrick and playing Joan of Arc on TV. Now they're both in decline. For some reason, whenever Helen's name comes up, I hear "I HATE Helen Hunt!" And Leelee's last movie was for Uwe Boll. Now would be the perfect time for these two to team up in a mother-daughter drama. If they cooked up something along the lines of Terms of Endearment, with a good, solid writer and/or director, it could be interesting. Or better yet, how about something really strange and kooky with Spike Jonze or Harmony Korine? (Note: apparently the two once went head-to-head on "Celebrity Death Match.") As Good As It Gets (DVD Menu Project)
from kmog November 11, 2007
This is the first project from year two of my course Digital Video Design (now named Interactive and Motion Design). The brief was to create a fully interactive DVD menu for a film of our choice and try best to convey the atmosphere, content and overall pace of the film. I've probably worked harder on this project for some more subtle aspects, than i have for any other project i've done so far. I think i've come a long way since the 'Persistence of Memory' project for example. Obviously the version sumbitted was a DVD disc with full interactivity, so for the version you see here is alot shorter and without the ability to select buttons. Music: As Good As It Gets- Hans Zimmerman Hope you like...
