Heathrow Airport, London, UK

Heathrow Airport, London, UK

from BcastNZ on November 23, 2009

London Heathrow Airport or Heathrow (IATA: LHR, ICAO: EGLL), located in the London Borough of Hillingdon, is the largest and busiest airport in the United Kingdom. It is the world's third busiest airport for passenger traffic and it handles the most international passenger traffic in the world. Heathrow is owned and operated by BAA, which also owns and operates six other UK airports. BAA is itself owned by an international consortium led by the Spanish Ferrovial Group. Heathrow is the primary hub of British Airways, bmi and Virgin Atlantic. Located 12 NM (22 km; 14 mi) west of Central London, England, Heathrow originally was designed to have six runways in three pairs spaced approximately 120 degrees apart but now has just two parallel main runways running east-west and five terminals. The site covers 12.14 square kilometres (4.69 sq mi). Terminal 5 was officially opened by H.M. Queen Elizabeth II on 14 March 2008 and opened to passengers on 27 March 2008. Construction of Heathrow East, to replace Terminal 2 and The Queen's Building, began in 2008, and is expected to be completed by 2012. Terminals 3 and 4 will also be refurbished during this period. In November 2007 a consultation process began for the building of a new third runway and was controversially approved on 15th January 2009 by UK Government ministers. Heathrow Airport has a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence (Number P527) that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flying instruction.

London City, Airport

London City, Airport

London City Airport (IATA: LCY, ICAO: EGLC) is a single-runway airport, for use by STOL (Short Take Off and Landing) airliners, and principally serving the financial districts of London. It is located on a former Docklands site, 6 NM (11 km; 6.9 mi) east of the City of London, opposite the London Regatta Centre, in the London Borough of Newham in East London, England. It was developed by the engineering company Mowlem in 1986/87. In 2007 London City was the fifth busiest airport, passengers and movements, serving the London area after Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and Luton and the 15th busiest in the UK. London City Airport has a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence (Number P728) that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flying instruction. Only multi-engine, fixed-wing aircraft with special aircraft and aircrew certification to fly 5.5 degree approaches are allowed to conduct operations at London City Airport. The airport has produced a master plan outlining their vision for growth up to 2030. The plan shows an expansion of the airport to a maximum capacity of 8 million passengers per annum, without the addition of a second runway, or significant expansion of the airport boundaries. London City Airport was purchased from the Irish billionaire Dermot Desmond, in October 2006 by a consortium comprising AIG Financial Products Corp. and Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP) for an undisclosed sum. In the final quarter of 2008 GIP became the sole owners of the airport. In 2007, London City Airport served a record 2.9 million passengers: a 23 per cent rise over 2006. In 2008, the airport carried 3.3 million passengers: a 12 per cent rise over 2007.

Construction of Heathrow East, to replace Terminal 2 and The Queens Building, began in 2009, and is expected to be completed by early 2014. Terminals 3 and 4 will also be refurbished during this period. In November 2007 a consultation process began for the building of a new third runway and was controversially[8] approved on 15th January 2009 by UK Government ministers. Heathrow Airport has a CAA Public Use Aerodrome Licence (Number P527) that allows flights for the public transport of passengers or for flying instruction. Heathrow is located 12 NM (22 km; 14 mi) west of central London, England, near the southern end of the London Borough of Hillingdon. The airport stands on a parcel of land that was designated part of the London Metropolitan Green Belt. To the north, the airport is surrounded by the built-up areas of Harlington, Harmondsworth, Longford and Cranford. To the east are Hounslow and Hatton, and to the south are East Bedfont and Stanwell. To the west, the M25 motorway separates the airport from Colnbrook in Berkshire. The airports location to the west of London, and the east-west orientation of its runways, means that airliners usually approach to land directly over the city. Other leading European airports, such as those at Madrid, Frankfurt and Paris, are located north or south of their cities, in order to minimise the overflying problem. Another disadvantage of the site is that it is low-lying, at 83 feet (25 m) above sea level, and can be prone to fog. Heathrow is one of six airports serving the London area, along with Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Southend and City although only Heathrow and City Airports are located within Greater London.

Solutions Vol 15

Solutions Vol 15

from me on blip.tv (beta) on October 24, 2009
Duration: 684
This week we hark back to the days when life was so much more simple! Nobody wanted to concrete over War graves, and desecrate historic churches, the lives of thousands of simple English folk were not in danger from multinationals, hell bent on profit and the Good Life was on our television screens, poking simple sweet fun at hippies! Yes, PTV has an exclusive interview this week with Richard Briars, the great thespian and star of The Good Life! PTV Went to a tiny little village ideally situated, in what used to be known as "The Breadbasket of London" now better known as "A right pain in the Arse" to the people who want to bulldoze it and put in a CRAZY and UNESSECARY third runway at Heathrow! Greenpeace, with the help of such luminaries as Zac Goldsmith and Emma Thompson, purchased and set up the "Airplot", and idyllic site, which was being planted out as we filmed. There are thousands of owners, each who will have to agree to sell, before the runway can be built!!! (We hear it on the Grapevine that the Tories will "scotch" the runway anyway when/if they get into power! Let's hope that's true!) Later on in the program we visit ECOBUILD and FUTUREBUILD 2009 at Earls Court. There is quite literally NOTHING else to be discovered about ecobuilding, after you've been to this tremendous show! I personally loved the Hempcrete! (Hemp concrete!) I almost bought an ecohouse from Zed factory too, but I couldn't convince VISA to put the 65,000 quid on my card that was required!
