Congressional Hearing On Bush Abuse Of Power: Rep Wexler Brings The Heat
from Crooks and Liars July 25, 2008
Download | Play Download | Play The House Judiciary Committee is holding hearings today on the numerous abuses of power and impeachable offenses of George W. Bush and right out of the gate, Florida Rep. Robert Wexler lays out the clear case for the need to begin impeachment hearings. I fully recognize the significance of holding impeachment hearings and I have not come to this position lightly. Not one bit. But when an administration takes actions that amount to High Crimes, we, the Representatives of the people, are left with no option other than to seek impeachment and removal from office. Our government was founded by a delicate balance of powers, whereby one branch carefully checks the other branches to prevent a dangerous consolidation of power. The actions of this White House have eviscerated this careful balance. This is not a Democratic or Republican issue. This is an American issue. Without these checks and balances the President can run roughshod over any law with impunity. Congress must end this disturbing pattern of behavior, and in these circumstances, unfortunately, the only option left is impeachment hearings. You got to give Wexler credit, he s been very vocal for pushing for accountability and taking the hits from the wingnuts for it. And now he s getting support from other Democrats in the House, like Maurice Hinchey: Congressman Maurice Hinchey (D-NY) will testify before the House Judiciary Committee on Friday, July 25, 2008 during a hearing entitled, Executive Power and Its Constitutional Limitations. Hinchey will highlight the reasons he co-authored two resolutions with U.S. Senator Russ Feingold (D-WI) that formally condemn President Bush, Vice President Cheney, and former Attorney General Gonzales for misconduct regarding U.S. military involvement in Iraq and for repeated assaults on the rule of law. The hearing begins at 10:00am and can be viewed via the House Judiciary Committee s webcast. President Bush and senior members of his administration have repeatedly defied the Constitution, violated the law, put our country in jeopardy, and made a mockery of our judicial system, Hinchey said. This hearing will enable the facts to be presented in a clear and straightforward way so that the Congress and the American people can more fully understand just how corruptly this administration has operated. With an eye toward the future, we must ensure that history books note that this Congress stood up to this administration and formally admonished it for all its violations of law. Full transcript below the fold Thank you, Mr. Chairman. I applaud your tenacity and courage for calling for this hearing. For the past few months, I have vigorously argued that this committee should be immediately begin impeachment hearings. The allegations made against the Bush White House documents serious abuses that if proven, would certainly constitute High Crimes. The White House is charged with deliberately lying to Congress and the American people, manipulating intelligence regarding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, ordering the illegal use of torture, firing US Attorneys for political purposes, denying the legitimate Constitutional powers of congressional oversight by blatantly ordering subpoenas among countless other crimes. Never before in the history of this nation has an administration so successfully diminished the Constitutional powers of the Legislative branch. It is unacceptable and it must not stand. This is not how our Founders so carefully and delicately designed our democracy. In a deliberate effort to reduce the power of this Congress, and obstruct our ability to provide oversight over the Executive branch, President Bush has ordered Karl Rove, Harriet Miers, Josh Bolten and other administration officials to simply ignore Congress by refusing to testify. This failure of administration witnesses to even appear is unprecedented in the history of our nation. The Bush White House has distorted the concept of Executive Privilege beyond recognition in order to hide White House wrongdoings. Faced with this litany of wrongful actions, I am convinced the most appropriate response to this unprecedented behavior is to hold hearings for impeachment. [applause] The power of impeachment—excuse me—the power of impeachment, which our Founding Fathers provided to the House of Representatives was designed precisely for this type of wrongdoing. We have been down this road before. Yes, we have. In 1973, Articles of Impeachment were introduced against President Nixon after he inappropriately tried to use Executive Privilege to bury evidence of his wrongdoing. I think it would be helpful to delve more deeply into what happened during the Nixon administration, particularly as it relates to the obstruction of the oversight powers of this Congress. Mr. Chairman, I thank you so much for having this hearing and giving the American people an opportunity to hear about how we can begin to take our government and our country back.

"BUSH GUILTY OF 1ST DEG MURDER" - BUGLIOSI TELLS CONGRESS
from Most Discussed July 25, 2008
Friday July 25, 2008 SHARE The Prosecution of George W. Bush For Murder , which details prosecutable evidence of murder by George Bush and Dick Cheney and others. George W Bush knew and purposely lied to America and mislead The Congress about Saddam Hussein NOT being an IMMINENT threat to the United States by deleting that critical sentence in a declassified report (The White Papers) by his own Intelligence Advisors in order to start the War with Iraq. And the SAME PATTERN IS BEING PLAYED NOW regarding IRAN. This President NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE! In his book, Bugliosi says he has irrefutible proof to convict both George W Bush and Dick Cheney for 1st Degree Murder, a crime for which there is NO Statute of Limitations. Bugliosi is best known for his successful 1970 prosecution of Charles Manson. Main Stream Media is not covering this Historic Event, brought by the moving papers of Articles of Impeachment, authored by Congressman Dennis Kucinich, (D) Ohio and former presidential candidate. Countdown: Impeachment & Subpoenas, Bush Continues To Evade Justice
from Crooks and Liars July 16, 2008
Download | Play Download | Play (h/t BillW) The House has sent articles of impeachment against George Bush to the House Judiciary Committee, however Speaker Nancy Pelosi now says that an actual impeachment VOTE isn t on the table. On Wednesday s Countdown, Jonathan Turley gives his expert analysis on this epic fail as well as the latest attempt by the president to obstruct Congressional oversight by claiming executive privilege in the CIA/Plame leak investigation. As for Bush s executive privilege claims, Turley goes right for the jugular. Attorney General Michael Mukasey all but begged the president not to make him testify about Dick Cheney s role in the Plame case and has ignored a subpoena to appear to testify about the matter before Congress which Turley says should prompt Congress to charge him with Inherent Contempt. That s not likely to happen, and as Jonathan points out, Democrats who voted for Mukasey are now getting what they paid for: This is why, when Senators Shumer and Feinstein saved Mukasey s confirmation, this is what they purchased. And, what Congress needs to do, the only thing they can do, is bring back Inherent Contempt and to say they re going to start to exercise contempt on their own, that the deal is off. Attorney General Mukasey has broken a very long standing promise to be a faithful broker, to bring these cases to the grand jury - he won t. And Congress has a right to now say we re going back to doing this stuff ourselves.

David Addington: I can’t talk about torture because al-Qaeda may be watching CSPAN
from Crooks and Liars June 26, 2008
David Addington today offered a preposterous reason for refusing to answer a question about whether or not he was party to talks about torture with his superiors al-Qaeda may be watching CSPAN and he can t give away any information that may benefit them. Really. Download | Play Download | Play DELAHUNT: Oh I can understand why [the President] doesn t talk about it. ADDINGTON: Because you gotta communicate with al Qaeda. If you do I can t talk to you, al Qaeda may watch C-SPAN. DELAHUNT: Right. Well, I m sure they are watching, and I m glad they finally have a chance to see you, Mr. Addington. ADDINGTON: Yeah, I m sure you re pleased. UPDATE: Digby has much more on Addington: Addington ought to be held in contempt of Congress for just plain contemptuousness. As Scott Horton noted on Pacifica s coverage, he clearly believes himself to be smarter than all the Representatives in the room, and he has no problem bullying them around the way he reportedly bullies everyone in the executive branch. He also doesn t mind lying about his role in designing torture tactics after a personal trip to Guantanamo read on

Rep. Steve King (R-IA) to McClellan: Why couldn’t you just shut up?
from Crooks and Liars June 20, 2008
Who can forget Rep Steve King s horrible words about Obama back in Iowa? King: And I will tell you that, if he is elected president, then the, the radical Islamists, the, the al-Qaida, and the radical Islamists and their supporters, will be dancing in the streets in greater numbers than they did on September 11 . Well, he s baaaack. In one of the most reprehensible lines of questioning today - and Lord knows there were many as Republicans desperately try to outdo each other on who can cover Bush s ass best - GOP stooge Steve King takes the cake with this gem: Couldn t you have taken this to the grave with you and done this country a favor? Download | Play Download | Play You see, in bizarro Republican world, staying silent and allowing your fellow citizens to remain clueless about how their leaders lie to them is the right, patriotic thing to do. Only traitors speak up about how their country is being flushed down the toilet when there s still time to actually do something about it. You should be ashamed of yourself, Scott.

PlusCustody Hearings Begin in Texas Polygamy CaseCustody Hearings Begin in Texas Polygamy CaseThe Associated PressThe massive Texas polygamy custody cases got underway Monday in San Angelo, Texas; with parents learning what they must do to regain custody of their children. The hearings are expected to last three weeks. (May 19)[Notes:basic broll outside the courtroom] So many custody hearings are going on in San Angelo, Texas -- they're filling up every courtroom here in Tom Green County. [Notes:file shots from last month]The 400-or-so cases all stem from a massive sweep of a polygamist sect's compound, last month. Texas Authorities say the members of the Fundamentalist Church of Latter Day Saints were forcing underage girls into marriage and sex. [Notes:jessop] The church says its members are being targeted for their beliefs. SOT: William Jessop, Church Spokesman: if they can openly admit they can take away the book of mormon from us today, it will be the Bible tomorrow. [Notes:more broll outside the court]At issue for most of these hearings -- what do the parents of these children need to do -- to get their children back. Advocates for the parents say, the answer is vague.SOT: Johana Scot, Parent Guidance Center : there is no checkoff list that this is what you need to do, to fix this for your family. Attorneys for the victims say a lack of details in the cases is adding to the problem. The mothers of more than 100 children haven't been identified. Child welfare officials haven't been able to determine other childrens' exact ages.SOT: Susan Hayes, FLDS Attorney I saw that the Governor of Texas has been praising the job they're doing and to me that's a lot like Bush praising Brownie after Katrina. [Notes:broll from last month] Last month's raid of the 'yearning for Zion Ranch' came after someone called a domestic abuse hot line - claiming to be a pregnant 16-year old. The girl has never been found.SOT: it's outrageous, and if you guys are going to sit around and let the government of this state, remove even the book of mormom from our children -- you're brain dead. 60 Minutes: Corruption in Iraq Killing US Troops With US Dollars
from Crooks and Liars April 15, 2008
Download | Play Download | Play 60 Minutes on Sunday explored the rampant corruption going on throughout the Iraqi government, and how much of the up to $18 billion missing or unaccounted for has been finding its way into the hands of militias that have been responsible for attacks on coalition forces. What s more, they detail how Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki was able to immunize all current and former Iraqi officials, including himself and his family, from any further investigation or prosecution, the State Dept s refusal to cooperate with any investigation, the ostracism and apparent abandonment of the one Iraqi official who braved death threats, and the murder of dozens of his staff, to successfully prosecute corrupt officials before PM Malaki effectively shut him down, and how one such former official, Aiham Alsammarae, who had already been convicted and was set to face even more charges for billions of missing funds while he was the Minister of Electricity, brazenly escaped a Green Zone jail with the help of U.S. contractors (twice) and is currently living large in a Chicago suburb. Full 13 minute report and transcript here. A look at some of the events, documents and key players after the jump. Judge Radhi al-Radhi: The former head of the Commission on Public Integrity who was tasked with weeding out corruption in Iraqi government. Judge Radhi was pushed out of his job by PM Maliki and forced to flee Iraq, lucky to have gotten out alive, unlike the 31 members of his staff and their family members who were murdered. He currently resides in a Washington DC suburb as he seeks asylum in the US. Judge Radhi basically has been abandoned by the State Dept as they have thus far refused to cooperate, as Judge Radhi has, with ongoing Congressional investigations into corruption in Iraq. Memo (PDF) banning Judge Radhi s Commission on Public Integrity (CPI) from investigating Iraqi officials without the consent of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki. Aiham Alsammarae: A wealthy Iraqi expatriate and Chicago area resident with dual citizenship recruited to become the Electricity Minister under Paul Bremer. Alsammarae was later the only Iraqi official found guilty, not in absentia, of corruption, and had more charges pending relating to billions in missing funds when he was busted out of a green zone jail - twice: The first time on Oct 11, 2006 when, reportedly, the two US contractors assigned to protect him overpowered Iraqi police and rushed him from a courtroom to the US embassy but later returned him. The two contractors later claimed they “were fired for doing our jobs, per protocol and with the full knowledge and blessings of our superiors” as Alsammarae claimed that his life was in danger. A spokesman for DynCorp later confirmed much of those details. A few weeks later investigators in the US looking into an Iraqi power plant deal involving Antoin Tony Rezko, leaked that they wanted to talk to Alsammarae about how his former college buddy managed to land that contract. Then the second time Alsammarae escaped he was apparently freed from a Green Zone jail on Dec 16, 2006 by a team working for Blackwater USA, and despite being wanted by Interpol he managed to return to the US a few weeks later. He currently resides in his gated Chicago suburb where homes range from $1.5 million to $4 million. While the following is speculation on my part, I must admit that the timing and manner of Alsammarae s escape, his ability to return to the US and resume his life apparently open and unimpeded, and the timing of his name popping up in a politically sensitive case nearly a year before Attorney General Gonzales resigned raises all kinds of flags for me, as I would think it might anyone who has followed closely the US Atty Scandal and the Don Siegelman saga. All that said, I really hope I m wrong about that. In Sept 2007 the State Department retroactively classified this previously Sensitive but Unclassified report detailing widespread fraud, intimidation and embezzlement within the Iraqi government, but not before it made its way onto the internets. Since then, the State Department has thus far refused to cooperate with Congressional investigations or turn over documents relating to corruption in Iraq.

from Top Favorites April 10, 2008
No, I'm not talking about another lie, or the fact that she told Bush to Boycott the Olympics, even though 6 months ago she said nothing comes from Boycotting the Olympics, or this same yenta who said we have to improve our image in the world and be better diplomats except for the largest emerging economy in the world, or protest the same country that her and her husband took campaign contributions from... No even lower than that. Again this pathetic yenta showed how devious she was during the Petraeus Senate hearings. She showed just how desperate she is to win an election. She would rather disregard everything that General Petraeus says, and all of the positive outcomes in Iraq, just to prove how tough she is on this war that she voted for. Even the other Democrats, didn't deny the positives. Although they were tough with Petraeus, they still showed respect and didn't deny the improvements. Only this Yenta, could put her own success first, over the success of her country.
